Vehicle Registration...

Hey fellas,

Just a quick question... well, my vehicle's registration is due in a couple of weeks for round $500 or or so. The thing is, I just bought a property recently and financially things are quite tight as we've had to purchase a lot of homewares and appliances as people do after having just moved into their property.

Anyway, I'm finding it hard to pay for the above registration coming up in a couple of weeks and was thinking of not paying it (leaving the vehicle unregistered for a few months) - of course I won't be driving it during this time and then re-register the vehicle when I can afford it. However, I've been told by some friends that with new laws and the amount of aftermarket mods on my car, it will be very hard to re-register it, say, after 2-3 months as I'll have to present the vehicle for a full inspection again before VicRoads would apply me to re-register the vehicle -hence, they suggest that perhaps do what I can to register the car to afford the above happening seeing that there is a chance I may not be able to register the vehicle anymore.

If the above is true, then of course I'll have to make big cuts to my budget to make payment otherwise I can simply not drive the vehicle (whilst leaving it unregistered) for a few months and then re-register it when my financial situation is better.

What are your thoughts on this matter?

vicroads will give you an extra 2-4 weeks to pay if that helps

Serious? But will my car remain registered ... well, registered pending payment or will it still be off the road etc?

it will still be registered, but once you go over the extension time it will be de-registered (or woteva happens when you dont pay)

Hey mate, thanks for that... if this true, then that's great... all I need is an extra month - that's all... ok, I'll give VicRoads a call tomorrow morning... has anyone ever extended the payment of their registration fee yet?

Aso, is there any truth in my friends comments about how it is harder to register a vehicle after having it off the road etc.?

Yeah, this is exactly what I was worried about... shittt......... I hope Justin911's comments are valid... damn it... bad timing with the rego but I guess at least it's only once a year... anyone else with similiar experience?

Justin, you're a champion! Your help is much appreciated, no really, it is... I was pulling my hair out... 3 months is a life-line!

That's great... I don't mind not driving my car, it's more so the payment that I was concerned about... all I need is more like 1 month and I'll be good again... thanks mate... and others too!

just pay 6 months...only like $260 or something. dont know about vic, but in perth u can pay half yearly. mines due in 6 days...havent payed yet

you can only pay half in victoria if you have one of them health/concession cards. my friend tried that last yr

my rego was over due by 2 days i then payed it by bpay over the fone and couldnt get a printed receipt as it was over the fone only got a receipt number the next day i got pulled over and copped a $551 fine as it hadnt been processed by vic roads but the money was taken outta my account. no i have to wait for vic roads to get off their ass and send me out a receipt then forward it to civic compliance then the infingment will be cleared.

Cant drive the car from the date of expiry, but can keep it 'registered' upto 3 months.

Odd question considering the renewal notice you were sent had all the information on it... (about the 3 month grace period etc).

during the year, take all the loose change you get whenever you buy things, and put them in a jar. When it comes time to pay for rego/inusurance, knock that jar over and start counting.

I usually end up with around $800 at least, by mid year, in change.

Well yes. If you've got illegal mods and you don't feel like changing them back to stock and/or minor problems such as oil leaks and don't want to fix them for a RWC then it's a wise move to keep the car registered. I had my car registered for 1.5 years when it barely saw sunlight and sat in a garage.
