hey guys,

As some of you may know i've been looking at getting a new car.

Now when i got my Ps i got a auto license because i already had a auto car but now i'm getting a manual car (I can drive manual) so i was just wondering about the following questions:

-How do i change to a manual license?

-Whats required in the test? (is it just like repeat of test or just a drive around the block?)

-Whats the penalty if you get done for it? or something?

I got pulled over in my GFs manual car and cops just did a license and rego check or something and they didn't say anything about my license being auto.

Any info is appreciated, Thanks.

get that shit fixed, next time you mightn't be so lucky.

First of all (as you know) you are not allowed to drive a manual with an auto license. You are allowed to if you have a fully licensed driver with you and you display the 'driver under instruction' sign. You will need to display your P plates in addition.

To answer your questions:

1. Sit the practical test again.

2. Just the same as you did with auto, but with a manual car.

3. I would expect it will be driving without a(n appropriate) license.

As far as I know you have to redo your driving test completely, not sure about the time on Ps factor, but I was pulled over once in the last 12 months of my Ps, and they didnt notice.. anyway they've changed so much crap lately you should probably just call them tomorrow and if you're super lucky you will get a correct answer

why not ring vicroads, or go see them, or check on their website?

it would be covered on their for sure.... go look....

but the auto/manual normally only applies on your p's under conditions

look on the back of your licence under conditions, it will have A for auto

on your normal full licence the auto condition should vanish and you can drive whatever

so if you have your full licence, check for the conditions on the back

if you dont, wait till you get your full licence or speak to vic roads on how to retest with manual while on p's

for the amount of times i have been pulled by cops not once did they check for tranny..

i am a auto licenced p plater driver but had nothing but manuals since day 1..

do what i did i always had a beenie over my gear nob when i got pulled over, or just do the leagal thing

lol like every1 else has said and re sit the test...

its only a money fine no demerit points as far as i no anyways...

Like some have commented already... if you have a auto license and still on your P's, you are not (legally) allowed to drive a manual vehicle as the test you had past was no doubt done in an automatic vehicle. However, when you are off your P's, you can drive any sort of car you want provided that of course you can drive a manual car.

What others have said is generally true - cops often do not check for transmission type of the vehicle that you are licensed to drive - however, a mate of mine was caught out once and was fined $155 and a loss of 1 demerit point if my memory serves me right. So yeah, I would not drive at risk if I were you - alternatively, like you said - just go for the test again, this time apply for a manual license (which of course also allows you to drive automatic vehicles) and take a the driving test again in a manual vehicle. It's as simple as that.

When I got my license I went for Auto as well, coz my dad bought me my 1st car and it was auto...

When i bought my own car, i bought a manual. I knew how do drive manual so I just went and re did my driving test.

Took like 10 minutes! U dont have to re-do the one on the computer again, just the driving test.

Was easy. Just call Vic Roads to make ur appointment :)

Don't listen to those muppets. It's easy, all you need to do is sit your test again, I had to.

Funny thing is it's eeeeeeasy, so easy in fact I almost failed becuase I wasn't listening and almost missed a turn.

Just book in with a instructor for one brush up, to get rid of those bad habbits then sit the test with them again. Easy.
