Why are you getting so upset about having no plates ??

Just go to the RTA, tell them what happened - They can re-issue you with new plates. Might take 6 weeks to get them as they may have to make new ones up - In the mean time, ask for an interim set. That will get you back up and running. This is the process you would follow if your plates were stolen or damaged and you would normally need to pay for them - However, in your case, because there was an error that had nothing to do with you, and all parties acknowledge this (so you say, anyway) then they should waive any fees and charges.

I was thinking the same thing - get them to reissue a plate (no fees) until they sort their problem out. I would also try to negotiate an extension on your expiry date to compensate for days down. Still put in a formal complaint to the Ombudsman.

you have 3 months after your rejo expires till your plates have to be returned to the RTA. as far as i know cops cant take your plates. technically they arent allowed to touch your car (literally) unless they are suspicious that you are trafficking drugs and the like. (read the police powers act) i even think this applies to being defected - they cant open your bonnet themselves, they have to 'ask' you to do it.

the RTA requests them to be returned via a letter in the mail. not a special devision of the police department who drive around and deliver number plates.

Well this officer had no problems with taking them... at least he was careful while doing it...

Why am I getting so upset?

The plates are my property, I pay for them. I understand the officer was doing the right thing when he took them (I assume it's the right thing) off of what he thought was an un-registered vehicle... I was ASSURED on the day that the plates would be at Thornleigh RTA by Monday, regardless that it was a public holiday. I went there on Tuesday to sort it out and pick them up... the error was sorted out in ten minutes with the RTA, the car has rego again, but the RTA have not seen my plates...

I've spoken to Hornsby Police who passed the buck to Gordon Police, who passed the buck to highway patrol. I now have a number for Highway patrol that so far, has just rung out without any answering service.

B-Man, this is my only car, I can normally organise another car if mine goes into a shop for whatever reason, but that is planned... I NEED THIS CAR TO GET TO AND FROM WORK.

I had an appointment to go and pick up my plates yesterday at two at Gordon Police Station. I took time off work and the boss' car to get there. When I got there, they were gone, and no one can tell me where they went, or how on Earth I could get them back...

Did you also learn that the ombudman deals with serious complaints rather than lost property. Call the Highway patrol supervisor, give them your details and they may be able to find the officer who took them. Being a short period they are more than likely not even at the RTA. If he cant help you then call his supervising offiver at the station where they work.

Well i got no clue to what you can do, but lets just hope you get your plates back.. goto the cops and ask for a case ID or sumfn, then goto the RTA and demand compensation for the F*CK UP .. and advise them of your action of putting on the TRAFFIC plates. or, write the plate on a peice of cardboard and stick it on ur car.. better then nufn..

Compensation..........for what. The plates were taken legitimately at the time. When you speak to the police get an event number, and carry that with you if you drive without the plates.

Police will take plates if the rego is expired, cancelled or abandoned. Dont ever think they cant touch your car. They definitely have the power to enter search etc. it has nothing to do with suspecting drugs etc.

No mate, the RTA are the ones who made the mistake, the Police acted on the information provided to them (albeit incorrect)

6 weeks pretty much isn't quickly... and the thread isn't about what actions to take, I think I've taken all the right ones, it's about what to do when the police just don't do their job and dick you around...

Doof - This may sound harsh - But there's absolutely no point in getting all upset and resentful at Government organisations like the RTA and Police. They are just doing their job to the best of their ability - and yes, sometimes they get it wrong - and yes, it is an inconvenience. And yes, you had appointments etc - But dood - Don't you get it - no-one gives a toss - And I doubt that the ombudsmen will give a toss either.

So the best advise I can give is what I already outlined. Just get on with it - the quicker you do it, the quicker you will be on the road - The more you complain about it - the longer it will take you - that's a fact !

Now - lets look at your part in all of this -

Had you not been defected in the first place, none of this would have happened.

So go easy mate - stop resisting - jut accept what has happened and get on with the next thing you have to do to get on the road again.

i think it was 1 extra set of plates and after that they would not make anymore.Hence have to choose a new style #plate.

Right, so rather than doing something useful and taking constructive steps as suggested to get your car back on the road, you would rather 'annoy' the authorities, and bitch about them on the internet.

Well, my plates are close by. I just have to find them and get them... This will take far less time then 6 weeks...

So rather then doing nothing for 6 weeks and having to pay for new plates, I will call the authorites inquiring as to the whereabouts of my plates. Once they are found, I can go and pick them up the same day... same day < 6 weeks

mate, you could always just go into the RTA, explain that your plates have been misplaced by the police and they will issue you plates to use in the meantime. sure they wont say dr doof on them but they will either find your ones or re-issue the same ones again. but at least in the meantime you can drive around with the only inconvenience being people wont know you are dr doof. they will think you are AE 78 RV instead.
