Considering that most things are controlled by the ECU, what does the mechanic play with during a dyno tune? - Just the ignition timing? Does dyno tuning make much difference over a standard service/tune?

Or is dyno tuning only beneficial during problem diagnosis? Eg...dianosing a pinging problem.

You can't exactly tune a car with the stock ecu. Usally when people get their cars tuned they have an air fuel controller or an stand-alone aftermarket ecu such as the apexi power fc. Dyno tunes are to extract every last horse or watt out of you engine. Your average Joe isn't going to need a dyno tune. A dyno isn't needed to diagnosis problems.

A dyno is a great tool for diagnosing problems. You can check a hell of a lot of things while the car is running that you can 't do when its sitting in the driveway idleing.

Plus it's good for tuning like netrati said but no good if you don't have anything in the management that can be adjusted like a SAFC or an aftermarket computer
