Help! My Car Starts Then Sputters To A Stop

i was going for a drive and noticed my fuel was really low, so i went on towards the nearest petrol station, on the way my car started sputtering and revving low, i pulled over and turned it off.

I assumed i ran out of fuel so i walked to walked to the closest petrol station, bought a can, put fuel in and went back to my car. My car still does not start, about 3l of fuel went in, however it still starts, sputters drops off revs and dies.

Was that not fought fuel or is something else broken? I am just off st kilda road near commercial street if anyone can help me

...are you still on the side of the road with your phone?

I so, put more more then 3L of fuel in the thing, considering it went so low it was spluttering...

3L would hardly fill the ridges in the tank for the securing straps.
