Just wondering if you can run a Z32 AFM on a standard ECU . At the moment i have a GT30r turbo on the car with standard AFM and im unable to run the boost passed 10 pounds anymore as the car hits a wall when coming on to boost.. Im pretty sure its the AFM maxing out and the ECU pulling out all the timing ( going into safe mode )

In the past ive had a z32 with the standard ecu and the car wouldnt run properly. Was wondering would a chipped ECU say like a MINEs ECU be compatable with z32 AFM? The reason im going through all this trouble is i dont want to put my power fc back in for now because A: Needs to be tuned B: Fuel economy goes out the window ( Premuim $1.80 @280 klm a tank) and C: ive seen a lot of cars with yellows stickers in my area and the cops are on to the power fcs.

At the end day i just want to know is there a way of running the boost up to say 12- 14 pounds on a stock ecu with a bigger turbo?

fuel economy can fixed with a real tune - so that fixes point B

point A requires a fixed cost $500 and should fix A and B

you can change the case on the PFC to the std ECU case if you want to hide it - so your worried about them finding the PFC but not the GT30r?

you would mad and stupid to run the turbo to its full potential on the stock ECU

this would imply stupid afr's and stock injectors, ie youll fry something

go back to the PFC and tune it properly

and all of your issues will go away - the stock isnt designed for bigger turbo's etc

you cant run z32 with std ecu unless you get it remapped

Agree with Paul 100% !

BUT the Z32 AFM is just an AFM with more Airflow at a Lower Voltage output than the std unit.

So if you put in a Z32 without doing anything else the AFR's would be way out RICH!

Thanks i thought as much

Most cops dont noctice the turbo as its low mounted and i have made the engine bay look stock, still have standard airbox cooler pipes run where stock ones did and boost controller is hidden

Do you know of any good tuners in the south east area who tune at a reasonable price. ive had two full dyno tunes last year and i wasnt happy with both of them.

Ahem, More airflow @ a given voltage would make the engine run lean.

There is no such thing as "just an AFM".

AFM output is non linear, so voltage at idle maybe similar but very different at full load.

With the right ECU/Tune you should be able to get more out of your current AFM.

I always see people talking about Z32 AFMs etc but I have seen so many high powered cars running stock AFM's.. it makes me really wonder.

In fact I have seen a high powered GTR with a single AFM probe plugged in post intercooler in a 2.5" pipe..

Seems confusing at times..

It's possible to tune beyond the point where the maf reads 5.12v, the ecu will continue to increase the amount of fuel based apon rpm.

So you add fuel to the parts of the map where it runs lean eg. higher target afr to achieve correct actual afr.

It's definately not ideal tho.

300zx or nissan maxima, 3l v6 afm ran same values as r33 just larger diameter.

I just looked at the VQ maps of both an Z32 VG30det and a R33 S2 rb25det and they are different.

I really couldn't see them having the same values as the VQ map is supposed to tell the ecu how much air is entering the engine.

The z32 AFM having a larger diameter would flow more air for a given voltage.

    • Hey lads, reviving an old thread.  As an update, since the last time replied to this thread, ive done mostly suspension. Havent touched the motor except for maintenance. Though upon changing spark plugs, found out i had splitfires pre-installed! Updates: - Got me some stock airbox top cover and snorkel to fit onto the original intake. Should be free of defects - Bought a set of R34 GT-T brakes (not installed yet, going to rebuild + respray in champion blue + white 'Nissan' text) - Bought the last set of bilsteins from @Sydneykid and had them installed. Has been making some sounds on the rear but hopefully should be sorted out after this New Year break. - Regreased front caster rod bushings (poly bushes..) - Rear upper camber arms - Whiteline sway bars (BNF27Z 22mm + BNR11XXZ 24mm).  The rear sway bars are a bit short (ive read 50mm else where) but was still able to get them in.  Anyhows, I reckon suspension is sorted now. Maybe replace bushes (do have a set of front upper control arms from SK not installed yet) but should be okay for now. From now, I'm wanting to start working on the motor, drivetrain etc etc. Still debating on the order to go on and what to buy etc but: - ECU ( Haltech or Link ( Link states that it dont support A/T or AWD functions... Can anyone attest to this? ) - Highflow turbo ( ATR43ss2 ) - Intercooler ( Not decided yet, but cant find many good afoordable ones. Toshi says to opt for crossflow Japanese. Bit difficult this one, unless I get a returnflow Blitz from JJ? ) - Injectors ( Any recommendations ? I do have a nismo FPR ( Thanks SK ) ) - Seats - Tune by either Toshi or DVS To be fair, I did consider just keeping the stock turbo and nistuning it. Sat in a mates stock N, that had something like 200kw, and I reckon that felt more than enough. Maybe I should just go this route ahhaha. Too many choices.... Planning a trip down south, so wanting to just clean things up and make sure it gets to and from in one piece. Anything else specifically I should do before ? Cheers lads
    • Must be for the car’s lucky charm 🤷🏽‍♂️ She runs fine, but it just seems to take about 1L less. Maybe I’ll have the oil sump dropped at some point to check if there is anything
    • Hmmm interesting. Mine is the exact same and clearly the right one.  The mystery of the engine oil being full after 3.5-4L continues
