ah this thread >_<

i put Redline MT-90 in my gearbox, as i was told it's for newer km cars, say less than 100K km's?

The gearbox has always been a little notchy when cold, but the MT-90 didn't affect that at all, if not made it more notchy when cold. And i don't think has made an improvement at all when at normal operating temp.

The car has done 63,000km's. I was told the Lightweight shockproof can be a little dodgy, say if you whacked it into a 10,000km gearbox, and the MT-90 was designed for that. But should i maybe try the Lightweight next time?

Depends how notchy your gear box is. If it's bearable, then don't bother changing it. But if it really annoys you to the point where you can't quick shift, then give the light weight Shock Proof a go. It's expensive at $120-$135 for a gallon (3.7L), but well worth it if it fixes the notchiness. I would have a read on their site, then shoot then off an email and ask what they recommend.

Maybe just put some Nulon G70 in it and see how that goes first? It's only $22.

khunjeng, who did your UOA? and how much was it? I'm keen to do one on the GTR, it's due.

sorry mate dont read this much anymopre. ALS WearCheck, go to their web site.

I have some kits left over...costs about $40 a pop.

I was going to do another pop sooner or later.

You need to do a few UOAs to spot trends.

I choose the 8100 assuming its the "8100 ESTER E-TECH"

I get a ot of PMs regarding what oil I use in my car:

Its all Redline.

Engine : 10W40

GB : MT90

Diff : 75W90 Gear

I switched from the Shockproof to MT90 as its a manual gb oil as aposed to the shockproof which is a gear oil. The Shockproof is also 75W140 which was a bit thick and I guess most others applications. MT90 is 75W90.

I buy all my products online from Performance Club (Harold). Web Link : http://www.performancelub.com/index.htm

I know many workshops who buy redline buy of him also because he has the cheapest prices. He also stocks: RP and Germam Castol. GC is top knotch stuff which is not avalibale off the shelf in Australia. If I wasnt using Redline, I would be using GC - however most people here have no idea what it is.

Performance Club prices are the cheapest. You can buy the top notch stuff for just a bit more than off the shelf Mobil1 for example.

Hope that helps some people out.

Hey ive got 1996 R33 with 92,000 km on the clock. Im thinking of using Mobil 1 5W-50 any good??? Its got some wank factor supersyth stuff but i dont really care. Mobil recommends this for newer and older cars so im thinking this would be great for my 11 years old line. Ive been told sythetic oils could be too thin for my skyline what are the forum opinions on this??? Lifter are a little noisy when car is cold would this quieten them thanks :)

This redline shockproof oil people talk about, does it do anything for gearbox noise? i.e. whine's...

My gearbox is a bit notchy when icy cold, but that doesnt bother me, the problem is, it whines like a mother in law, in every gear but 4th, which is really irritating

what would that oil do for me?

also, Penrite SIN gearbox oil, any good? or Penrite engine/diff oil?

Mine began to whine louder than the slight whine it always had just before it smashed 3rd gear.

The whine wasn't loud enough to make me think this box is going to let go but it did have a high frequency cyclic type whine, sound effects.. Not just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa but waaawaaawaaawaaawaaawaaawaaa.

I wouldn't bother with good synthetic oil. Put it towards a new box. :)

You could try your luck with castrol vmx80 + a tube of nulon g70 but I doubt it will help all that much.

anyone?? :)

i was under the impression it was FULL synthetic, or it's not the best quality you can put into your car. So in other words, go with full synth, you don't want mineral.

I put MObil 0w-40 (i think) in my car last service. I believe the RB's have fairly noisy lifters to begin with, but it did quiet them down a bit. R34, turbo, 60K km's.

As far as i know from this thread, and what others have told me, you WANT full synthetic in your car. Mobil 1 is a really good choice, there is better, but it's a very solid starting point.

anyone?? :)

IMO, 5w50 maybe too thick for your ride. Choose something thinner like M1 0w40 for day to day run about or 15w50 for exclusive track/race usage.

oh, it's not true synthetic is too thin, that’s a myth. A SAE 40wt synthetic is exactly the same viscosity as a mineral 40wt oil, no difference at all.

Hey guys this oil stuff is abit more complex than I thought..

Ive got a R34 GTT With 60,000 on the clock - The servicer has been putting penzoil in the car (once) and didnt notice a big difference but id like to check with you guys would be best? Im not looking for the most expensive but some decent stuff to make her nice and lubed up.. Im also in sydney which means higher temps but winter is popping in now so prob reaching max of 25-29 in winter if we have some hot ones

Ive got no idea with Wts etc closest thing ive ever got to W was filling shocks in RC cars.. so go easy on me lol

And yes I read the above post but I wondered if my case would be different or I would use the same 0w-40 in mobil

My 20det gearbox in my hr31 is giving me the shits these days, most of the syncros are badly worn, its hard to get into and out of gear, crunches when cold etc. I've heard auto trans fluid is a good bandaid fix to get some more life out of them, would this be likely to make it a bit nicer to drive for the 10k before I get a new one?

Have you tried Redline Light Weight Shock Proof? If have and doesn't work then Redline D4 ATF (only ATF rated GL-4) maybe what you need to squeeze out of whatever remaining life from your GB.

DECIM8, i put Mobil (not Mobile ppls!!) in my R34, 62K km's on the clock.

Mobil 1 0w40, considering are cars are newish, it's fine to go this thin, although it's not that thin. Maybe running a bit smoother, hard to tell, but toned down the lifters a bit, which was nice.

good oil to start with. Will try German Castrol next or Redline, will prob give the GC a shot.

I don't think 5w50 is what you're after. Get 0w40
