At What Point Does The Price Of Fuel Make Car Ownerships Unrealistic For The Masses?

Recommended Posts

a) Where are you from?

b) How quickly can you start exporting fuel tankers to us with that cheap fuel?

hey mate

im from perth but now live in Dubai.

Whoever said fuel is 15c is wrong, its exactly the price i listed in my previous post.

THat being said other things are very expensive here. For example rent is more expensive than MAnhatten, Tokyo and London. its now apparently one of the most expensive places to rent in in the world

Cars are cheap, fuel is cheap, alcohol is expensive, living is ridiculously expensive (and u do pay per week, u pay like 2-3 cheques up front)

U may earn a decent amount but then again the $AUD is rising so strong it negates any raise i get here when i come home for holidays.

My solution is we should all move to Dubai/UAE. 15c/L fuel, no speed limits, massive roads and lots of work :) only problem is its like $15 for a beer lmao!

both those are very wrong dude. speed limits used to be +- 50%, all changed now. (ive been here 4 years now)

lookin at 50c per L fuel

Speedlimits on Shk Zayed Road is between 100-120kph (can either flash at 120kph - 140kph)

On emirates road which i use for work i sit on 150kph all the way down (120kph limit) and it doesnt flash..there are limits BUT they are not as strict as perth - on the downside there are a LOT of deaths here on the roads..a LOT.

Beer is around...20Dhs for a pint? so about $6AUD? but a Jagermeister and Redbull is about $20-$25AUD each...

however alcohol in Dubai Duty Free is the cheapest in the world..so a 1L Absolute vodka bottle is about $12AUD ....so yeah buy when u travel and stock up at home before u go out...

Also I think the Americans pay less for fuel because their fuel is slightly worse than ours? They have like 85RON or some shit im unsure but I know the highest RON rating they have their is 93 or 95. It could be the reason why or just because they invaded Iraq so they get the cheaper fuel..who knows eh.

You do know the americans rate there fuel differently to us? They're 93-94oct is equivelent to our 98. They also have 100oct at the pump in some areas and that is much higher than anything we have here.

its funny how most of u think gettin a motor bike will fix all ur problems

how wrong most u are.. yer sure ull save money @ the pump, sounds good

but biek tyres are very fkn expensive and they dont last 60,000km+ and they arent cheap either...

try 300+ just for normal touring tyres.. nothing special.. and pads?? lol 30 brake pads?? try again

and those dont last as long either.. infact.. nothing last long on a bike.. chains dont last very long and neither do the sprockets... and then theres the expensive as oils because they gotta live in an engine that can rev to 12k+

then theres rego which is my dads case which is just a gsxr750.. more than his commodore... and also the insurance and all the gear u need while riding..

Bikes arent cheaper. u guys need to understand that

unless u own a scooter... then there is no advantage to a bike at all

Im not sure your right there mate...

Ive had a bike for the last 10 months, its cost me all of $90 for a new chain, $30 in sprokets, $40 in oils, $10 chain lube...

Ive done 12,000km on it

I spent $1800 on gear to protect myself, helmet, pants, gloves, jacket, boots....

I pay $250 a year rego (cars are $500+)

I pay $650 Full Comp Insurance (I pay $3000 on the car)

I spend $18 to fill the tank i get 250km from that

I dont pay for parking anywhere (saves me $18 a day at work) HUGE savings there

I dont sit in traffic, traffic does not slow me down

I ride to and from work, aswell as anywhere and everywhere on the weekends with my mates....

Ill be getting a GSXR1000 in a few months and the prices will go up as i know, but the way fuel is going ill more than likely sell the car and just have a bike... possibly a $1500 shitter for the days rain is going sideways

A bike has been a bloody great money saver for me, aswell as alot of fun!

as the saying goes...

"Nothing cures low prices like no prices, and nothing cures high prices like high prices"..

Subsidies cut in Indonesia and China, India to follow suit sometime in the future, new oil rigs coming online in Russia, Iraq and Saudi has agreed to increase production by 200,000 BPD...

I don't think we need to worry too much just yet..

my old man has owned a bike for about 14 years now...

he owns a gsxr 750 and barely rides it... it still costs more to run than the lil mazda 323 he has

so no. im not wrong.. u just havent had it long enough :P

i forgot to add, racv did a test for the bike vs small car

over 2 years the bike was considerable more expensive

it went through tyres every 15,000km @ 450 a pop... thats 900 bucks every year in tyres

the small car didnt change any tyres

spent about 500 on chains and sprockets.. the car nothing... normal servicing on car @ shop was 120 bucks twice. so 240 over 2 years

the bike was 60 bucks every 5000km, 3 times a year. thats 360.... insurance on small car... 480 bucks with racv, insruance on bike.. 550

get where im going with this??? u cant win on a bike unless its a scooter

if RACV has done the test and showed it, and i have my own experience... theres not much else out there... oh and the 1000 u want chews tyres... like 8,000km lol factory tyre retails @ 600+ :P each

well the tyres werent new when i bought the bike so i dont know how many kms they had on them, prob got another 8-10k on them easy... pretty good imo.. i wouldnt even get that mileage out of my skyline!

Mate to be honest i dont know why your comparing a superbike to a runaround car... its like comparing a ferarri to a scooter... Of course a shitbox, beat up, 1.6L nugget will be cheap, but where is the thrill in driving that.. it cant run 10s out of the factory, it cant beat porsches.. its like apples and oranges...

Take a 300kw skyline, a hi po 200sx, hell even my S4 and THEN a bike is considerably cheaper! If your old man wants a cheap bike he should get a postie and sell the 323...

Okok, so lets go on netrider and tell everyone with 1000s or 750s that they should sell them and get honda jazz's... simply because they are cheaper, then instead of going on rides on sundays we can go in Jazz formations.. If i wanted to save lots of money then id buy a $500 suzuki swift, fart in the petrol tank every couple of weeks and put radial tyres on it every 5 years.. but would it be any fun? no. Would i want to take it out on weekends.. no...

Could i lane split and totally avoid traffic all together... no.. time is money afterall...

The Racv should be comparing performance levels... compare a scooter to a shitbox

a 600cc to a V8

a 750 to a 350kw car

and a 1000 to a 600hp 10sec car..

then whats going to be cheaper?

Do you see where im going with this.... get a shitter if you want to not spend a cent... get a bike if you want to enjoy the roads, have fun, and save money... if your minted then get a car and work the shit out of it....

Does not bother me if the 1000 chews tyres... riding to and from work saves me $20 a day, so thats just over 1 month of riding and the not paying for parking has saved me a new set of tyres worth of cash..

I get your point... but

You simply cant compare low performance econo boxes to high performance superbikes

my dad has a CBR1100 and its cheap as to run.. if ur dad did 2 x service in a yr then ur dad changes tyres once a yr.. not bad imo.. and it'd only be the back tyre that wears down that quick.. which also depends on how u drive it..

60 bucks a service.. will hell thats at least half the price of a car (also needs servicing every 5000klms) then the price on petrol you save every time you fill up..

it may not have a great diff in savings but you def win on a bike.. plus you get some excitement and you can dodge through traffic.. a big win!

obviously you dont ride a bike.. and you win if ur downgrading from a skyline.. if you wanna cry about savings.. then tell ur daddy to sell his shit 323 and his bike and go buy a family bicycle... there is a savings and ppl get want they want.. so just stfu

In regards to the bike argument - Bumblebee you are correct to some extent but I disagree that a bike is more expensive to run than a small car. I would say roughly the same.

It all greatly depends to the size of the bike - of course a 750 or 1000 is going to be more expensive to run than a smaller bike. It also depends on the brand of tyres you buy and wether or not you do your own maintenance. Also your riding style i.e. maniac or just commuting.

My mate has a GSXR750 that he rides daily (owns no car) - he gets around 5L/100kms, does all his own servicing (very easy on a bike)and what buys a new tyre about once every 12 months.

Personally I had a CBR600F4i for 3 years as a daily - Get about 5l/100kms a tank too - engine oil is not expensive and it only takes a few litres, tyres are pricey but only cause I buy decent ones and for me they last about 10,000kms so about a year then. Rego and insurance is cheaper than a car. Brake pads last ages (as the bikes are so light). I agree that having a bike AND a car is a false economy. Choose one or other - by the time you add 2 * rego, 2*insurance, 2*servicing ect ect any fuel saving is negated. I have both as I cant choose between them lol.

That being said any 250cc will absolutly smash a small car for runniing costs - they run on the smell of an oily rag, rego is dirt cheap as are tyres (and so light the tyres last forever). Park anywhere for free, get through traffic easy, use bus lanes, transit lanes bike lanes, the footpath lol. Then again who wants to ride a 250 ha?

For me its not a competition between whats better, i love both for different reasons.

My car's almost becoming out of my affordability range. I drive everyday to work. It costs me between $85-$90 a tank and it gets me 350kms. I drive to the G/F's house a fair bit as she doesn't have a licence. I've been averaging a tank every 5 days. 30 days in a month is 6 tanks a month. = $510 just on fuel. I only net $2200 a month!

I wonder why I can't remember the last time I bought something for myself..

Put your car up for sale, sell it to the first reasonable offer. Your skyline will be worth half of what it is now by the end of the year when the petrol creeps up to two bucks.

My 2nd car is a Jimmny. Runs on a oily rag, 3 cylinder 700cc turbo, great in japanese traffic, parkings a breeze, its 4wd so driving over footpaths etc is sweet and the thing is a gem in the snow and and ice and we get shitload of snow where I am..

The Skyline just gets used for cruising and track now...hioctane here is just under $2 aussie per litre.

Me :( lol. http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/08...0r-t226967.html

Buying a new Ninja 250R. Dont care how fast it is, its to get me to uni and work nearly every day, i want the car for speed. The amount of fuel i go through in the skyline, the amount of money it costs me servicing it every 5000km with 300V Motul oil, expensive tyres, having to worry about it every time i park it some where suss etc etc. Its not so much just for the sake of buying a bike to save a few bucks on fuel, its also trying to not use the skyline as much with the prices of everything going through the roof and i wanna keep the skyline for a long time and do a lot more to it but it becomes less practical to drive every single day the more i spend on it and i hate parking it out the front of the gf's house over night or something worrying about it.

So for my situation its a good idea and lets me experience something new again.

All the better reason to steal one :P

Na ! All our problems can be solved LEGALLY !

Q. Are there enough spares advertised on SAU to build a car from the ground up?

A. Yeh - some shitty, some good.

Q. Do we have enough savvy members of SAU who can build cars faster than a speeding bullet?

A. Absolutely !

Q. Do we have any members who can look Arab especially with a beard.

A. I'd say so.

Q. Are there any SAU members in Sales?

A. Yep - sure are.

Q. Well why don't we use our consortium to export Getaway cars to Iraq and swap them for full tankers ?

A.

    • So.... when I'm finally getting around to having my power steering leak sorted, now it looks like I've got the same issue most A/T Skylines are having. My A/T light will randomly come on and I'm stuck in 3rd gear until I turn the car off and on again. Only 3 weeks ago I did a complete transmission service: Oil flush + new gasket + new filter. This came out of nowhere!! It wasn't like the car was driven hard. I drove about 3 mins down the road to get fuel and boom!!!  Anyway, I have a few questions and hope you fine people can help me out here. All questions are in red. 1. The solenoids: I was looking at the parts catalogue in Amayama and I could only find the Solenoids as an assembly. https://www.amayama.com/en/part/nissan/319404ax05 I read in another thread that Solenoid A = 31940-4AX02 & Solenoid B = 31940-4AX05 but the Amayama product has only the code of B. Is this the right part? Can anyone who has done the Solenoid changes or seen them confirm if this is the complete set of A & B?   2. Gasket and Filter: I'm not going to try change the solenoids myself because it seems difficult to do in a home garage with just 2 jack stands. I plan to take it to a shop and get it changed. I was also going to buy the transmission sump gasket at the same time so I don't reuse the same gasket. Should I just use the existing gasket as it has only been on the car since OCT 19th? (~3 weeks) Should I be buying a brand-new gasket and a filter? Does this job involve taking the filter out?   Thanks in advance to everyone. It's hard to find a video of someone doing a solenoid change on a R34 so any help you can give answering my remaining questions would make me less stressed.
    • Yea - From what I have seen from the video, the car idles like any R34 lol 50PSI of fuel pressure is hardly super abnormal, the regulator is working because the pressure remains static when the throttle gets revved, i.e pressure remains the same when manifold vaccuum changes. Bigger pumps on stock rails always bumped the pressure in the rail without using an aftermarket regulator to change that. Do you know what your IAC is actually doing? Has there been any data showing the stepper motor % etc? There's no way your idle is actually moving around the way the cluster(s) are indicating. You would hear the difference with the engine RPM flying to 3k and 1k in mere seconds. I'd be checking the wiring to the tacho. What the tacho is telling you and what the engine/ecu is telling you are different things. I assume your ECU doesn't display the spike. So whatever is telling the tacho to be at X rpm is doing something weird. When the going gets insane, you're on the wrong path. You've ruled out plenty of things that are working correctly/aren't the issue. Your idle isn't doing what the tacho is indicating. You have two seperate issues, I don't think they are linked, and the idle seems reasonably okay unless it's stalling which.. well, it hasn't. Troubleshoot the stall if it occurs by figuring out what your IAC is doing vs what it is being told to do.
    • So awesome! I love the RB with the exhaust on display.
    • NO HITS PRICE DROP   ENGINE - $8.5k ONO TRANSMISSION - $1.8k ONO
    • If it has had a code in the recent past, the code should still be there waiting to be read.
