I been wanting to get a set of bonnet pins because I have a fibreglass bonnet on my car, and just want to be safe rather than sorry by ignoring the chance it could happen!

Now because the pins stick up like 1 or 2 cm, i have been told its illegal because if i ran over someone even though he or she will already be f'd, they will apparently be more f'd because of the pins sticking out that much...

Can anyone clarify this for sure, not as in what they've heard but wat the truth is? And also if it is definately illegal does anyone know of other types/designs of bonnet pins that are legal??

Thankyouu

I asked my boss(mechanic) about having fibreglass bonnet and he said its not a roadworthy issue, but told me what I just posted up about the bonnet pins so thats the reason why I thought I should seek and find out the truth about bonnet pins.

yeah i'm pretty sure the only legal bonnet pins are the ones that sit flush...i had the "jap style" ones that ur talkin about on my old car, to hold my carbon bonnet down, but i never really got done for them at all...just a risk that you gotta take...

Yup they are the ones, I guess it all depends on the cop that pulls u over..

yeah i think you'll find that it'll be one of the last things the defect you for, if they defect you for it at all...(in my experience)

but yeh ur right...all depends on the cop that pulls u over...

luck of the draw!

I always wondered about those flush ones tho...

if u end up gettin them, post up what u think about them...i'd be curious to know :)

do you still need the bonnet catch if you have pins, i have thought of getting rid of the catch so there is more room for a taller intercooler and just use bonnet pins to hold the bonnet down.

is then any law against this?

and before someone mentions it, yes i realize that if i remove the catch anyone can open the bonnet.

I didn't have the bonnet latch, the pins seemed sufficient enough.

Again, in terms of legality, it's probably not something they'll pick up on but its just something you'll just have to be willing to take the risk for...

if its carbon bonnet you're talking about, then the pins will be the least of ur worries...

FYI - PJ Mustang has pins as standard...

In Aus?

I've been pulled over and defected and the cop didn't even flinch about the bonnet pins and didn't care about the alloy wing. They go for the standard things like boost controller, pod/cooler and BOV. They only need 3 things.

yeah exactly. ride height is another common one.

even if that mustang was in aust, trying to use the "but the (insert make and model here) comes with a (car part in question) as standard!" excuse to the cops never works...

I believe they only pick 3 of the basic things because then you need a full rwc any way and it effectively is pretty much the same as picking as much as they can, so really all the people that have there car lowered, loud exhaust, atmo bov, fmic and pod are really just screwing them selves over coz it makes the cops job easier.

Yes the PJ Mustang has them standard in Aus.

If you're looking for rice, sorry I mean saftey sure add them :):P

:) :)

i think im prepared to take a ricer risk over having to buy a new windscreen and bonnet! and also the damage it could do other cars around me.. I'm not planning to hit land speed records on the eastlink :) I only got this paranoid from when i was doing something under the bonnet and a gust of wind came and blew the bonnet back right off the support rod! I thought to myself that u dont even have to be going fast, the right gust of wind can hit and fk shit up good !!
