Hey Guys and Girls.

So i'm hopping to buy a Stagea in a couple of months time...depending on when i can secure finance. Lol.

And the only major worry I have at the moment is that it will be auto, cause as u all would know Manual versions are hard to come by.

Anyways im looking at getting around a 1998 RS4 (Series 2) and i will be wanting to convert it to manual.

So if everyone who has done this can post up their gearbox/clutch combinations...and how they think they go and what they cost you.

Or if you have a wrough idea.

Thanks Matt

PS. I will be wanting decent power figures in the future and don't want to be replacing parts so i will be open to spending a bit more money for decent parts.

Dude, with manuals going at prices like these

you aren't going to convert one any cheaper.

(no, I dunno what the hell a "B Spec" is either..)

I did manual conversion, and i will never do it again. I've had a bad run with dodgy gearboxes, but aside from that, there's no value in buying an auto just to convert it, you're better off getting a manual one already.

I did a manual conversion with a 32 gtr box i had lying around from the race car, it was all pretty strightforward. but if you had to pay for the parts and a workshop to do the work it would be $6k+ easy.

but if you don't really like autos, just buy a s2 manual. the autos are slugs.

Thanks guys.

I was hopping to get one with low Ks on it...and from what i've seen "Manual" and "Low Ks" dont go together. So hence my choice to convert an auto.

Does anyone have a good idea of combinations...what will best match up with the stageas drive line?

Thanks guys.

Buy a manual.

If you're determined to convert there is heaps of information in the DIY section above:

2 "how to" threads

one on why not to convert

(editted - having regard to your comments on having problems finding a low mileage example)!

All the 4wd boxes will work fine, they are all the same length. There is a difference in diff ratios but the gearbox does not affect that (well maybe avoid the 34 gtr one it is very short).

as i said above i used 32 gtr, I think it is the best bet - cheapest and bolts straight in. Most use a push type clutch which are cheaper than pull type clutch from 33 and 34 gtr. pretty sure 32 gts4 is the same as 32 gtr as well. they go for about 800 second hand.

more expensive is the console. handbrake and clutch and brake pedal boxes are pretty cheap. cut a hole thru the floor for the shifter and that is about it, but the detailed threads above have lots of good info including all part numbers.

I am very happy with the outcome of the conversion (it is great to drive manual, best car I've had apart from the fuel consumption). But as said above it will be cheaper to just buy a manual unless you have most of the bits lying around like I did

i have an R33 with 196,000 km on it (plus the RS4S). the R33 has been pushing out over 200rwkw since i bought it 7 years ago. compression is sweet across the board.

120,00km is nothing.

buy the manual in the first place from any of the guys selling locally and you will be laughing. alternatively wait for one at auction and then the hassles of waiting for it to get on a boat, compliance and maintenance and repairs (ie coils, clutch etc). either way it will work out much easier and possibly cheaper than converting one.

    • I should note too as I have all 4 wheel speed inputs to the emtron I now have the emtron controlling the attessa solenoid for 4wd/traction and launch control strategies.
    • It works quite well with the adjustibility within each of the programs of the turbolamik. Essentially p1 is drive and lockup comes on like a normal driver.  But in program 7 I have customised it to not request the lockup clutch to engage until something like 6500/7 when slip was the lowest.
    • Yep, I like that. The tags are only on the first post of a thread and we don't get huge numbers of new threads. Also, I plan to add some more report types and we could have a member report type like 'review tags' then members could flag if they thought a topic wasn't tagged correctly.  No way man, I dig the input. Thanks!
    • It's a valid thought. There's not exactly that functionality already (when creating a thread) - that's where the OP can use/create any tag they want. We'd have to come up with a way for the user to request their tags get reviewed or something. Otherwise the mods would have to review every new post's tags (for those that have them, anyway). There's kind of that functionality already exists to some extent, post facto of starting the thread, where the OP or any other user could report the post to admins, and request that tags get reviewed. We could do this already, and any user could already have made such a request. To make it a part of the forum proper, it would require an initial and an ongoing education programme, so that people know that it's a thing. OP based tagging/request for review would also require at least some (probably most) of the user base to be told that it's a thing they can do. Both of these things probably wouldn't spread too far and/or get used very much. If it was the standard approach on a lot of different sites, then it might do, because people would be used to it. Prank's approach to this differs from my original thought, by leaning into tagging. Which is fine - it's possibly better than what I originally suggested. In fact, I just went to the R32 GTR wiring diagram thread and added tags, including "Library". That's probably a good way to use tags and the idea of a library. We just have to drag together an (organised!) index of threads or posts that have that tag. I have yet to do any of my own follow up by pursuing worthy threads and posts and reporting/marking/tagging them for the library, such as the @Sydneykid stuff I was talking about, and possibly any amount of @Lithium 's and others' posts. At least if I tag them Library, we'll have a start.   Back to @Wazmond's idea as it relates to @PranK's, we might have some sort of a list of tags that are already used to scrape for this library. I'm not entirely sure how that would be presented or used, particularly if it got long. But it's yet another idea!   cheers
    • Just a thought, but instead of restricting, is it possible to do like an "up for review" kind of thing? Where say someone who's not an admin/mod tags, it would require approval for it to actually tag? User posts with a 'tag' > Admin/Mod Reviews > Approves tag > Tag now exists kinda thing? Just came across this thread so Im not too sure if Im straying off topic or not but forgive me if i am...
