Yeah mate thats fine, Hertz sell them [ex-renters with 25-45 klms] through Fowles auctions at not much less than that, say $14,000-$15000. then on roads etc... check for history though, toyota wont cover a car unless it has service history and a few have gone up in smoke due to 30,000klm old oil that is too thick and sludgy for the oil galleries...

Actually mate, funny you bring that up. This was through Hertz. So they worked out on the road including 6mth rego, $15,700. What's your opinion on ex-rental cars? I mean my family are a bit iffy about them, but everytime me or my friends borrow a rental car we treat it with kid gloves to avoid paying the rental company for any dings and such.

you need to use genuine parts, and have an itemised receipt for service carried out by a qualified mechanic if its not serviced by toyota.. If you go to make a major wty claim, these things will be checked..

Thought so.. thanks for that :P

They are fine mate, most of the second hand near new vehicles sold at dealerships are ex-renters. Just make sure you check the body out to make sure that a train hasnt hit it. make sure it the log books filled out, or a printed service scheduale. oh and spare keys are dear, make sure you get at least 1 black key! the grey keys you cannot cut from. they are slave keys and it wll cost you $800 to get a new transponder unit put in if you dont have the black to cut from. if you do have the black , it will cost about $100..

Had a look at the body work on it, there's no dents/dings/resprays anywhere on it. They've got a full log.. so i figured it should be alright for an a-to-b car.

Thanks for the tip on the spare keys.. i'll be sure to ask them when i go back there.

    • A universal ball joint removal c press kit is better money spent and will work for the Hicas ball joints.  Here's a 45$ CAD Example. ATPEAM Heavy Duty Ball Joint Press Kit with 4WD Adapters | Professional 4 in 1 Ball Joint Press Removal and Installation Tool for Cars and Trucks | Universal Ball Joint Tool with Storage Case, Ball Joint & Tie Rod Tools - Amazon Canada
    • True on both points
    • So there is no other way to remove and install the ball joints then to buy the Frenchys kit?
    • Just to close off this post with the cause of my oil consumption issues. Vertical scoring and glazing at the bottom of cylinder 6. I'm not happy, but at least I finally found something. I'll pull it and get it apart asap. Hopefully I don't need to go one size up in piston.
    • I finally got around to purchasing an actual articulating borescope. Great tool to have, I've been very impressed vs my old regular inspection camera.  With that being said, sadly I finally found the cause for my oil consumption. I always had the feeling something wasn't right but compression and leak down tests were always perfect and I had already inspected the cylinders. This time i dropped each cylinder to its absolute lowest point and with the better quality camera I found this... Bottom of cylinder 6.  Scoring looks deep and I'm presuming oil getting by caused the glazing. I already spoke with my assembler, and will be dropping it off as soon as I can pull the motor and get it apart. I'm just hoping it's not deep enough to require boring out from 86.5 ->87mm. Pistons aren't cheap.
