Squeeling Noise (amp+speaker)

Hey guys,

I just installed an amp(1400w) and bose speakers(2x 700w) set into my car with a amp wiring kit; and its making weird high pitched squeeling noises every 5-10seconds (only when its turned on). The sound is only coming from the speakers wired through the amp. Messed arround with the cables(changed to better cables) and it didnt seem to change anything. Whats wrong with my speakers/amp?

. the B+ is connected to the "blue auto ant" of player. (should be power antenna?)

. gnd is linked to chasisy

. power is linked to battery (altho obvious =P thought may help)

Where have you routed the rca cables? Is your earth secure and the same gauge if not more than your power wires? I had same problem when I put my amp in, but thats because my wiring was too close to the power and earth cables. Move them as far away as possible from your rca and speaker wires and it should do the trick. The sound you are hearing is alternator whine (im guessing it does it when car is running and gets worse with lights on)... Good luck hopefully solves your problem.

The amp is located at the back of the car and the rca cables are routed towards the left side of the car (which passes the battery which is located at the back) the earth is secure and has the same gauge as my power wires. So wiring my cable on the right side of the car to avoid the battery should fix the problem? Should i avoid both power and earth cables which powers the speakers only or all power cables in the car?

Try for larger earth than power (from the battery anyway, because battery has to earth the same guage amp earth PLUS the car's other electricals).

How long is the Ground wire from the Amp to the grounding point, also what is the grounding point?

Golden rule with Amp grounding is to ground to the chassis, such as a strut tower or belt buckle, and to keep the Ground run from the amp as short as possible, and to under 1 meter in length.

The typical rules for car audio are:

-Run RCA leadsmon Side A of the car, Power, remote, etc to Side B of the car.

-Upgrade Battery ground lead to at least 1 guage larger than your amp grounding wire (to cater for amp(s) and all other electrical devices

-Keep Grounding wire as short as possible, and try to keep it less than 1 meter long

-Mount to STRONG chassis point, suck as strut tower ot Belt buckle section

-Make sure Grounding point is sanded back to pure exposed metal, and that the grounding points have solid or strong contact, no good grounding with deteriorated loop connector that has poor connection) (I also like to spray the area with clearcoat laqure when connected to stop oxygen getting to the exposed/sanded back metal)

-Fuse power cable from battery with the right amp/voltage fuse (or it will be the weak point for power delivery).

-Ground headunit to Strong grounding point on the car (if grounding of headunit and amp creat different voltage potentials, you WILL get ground looping, and alternator whine when the engine is going).

Hope these steps help you out somewhat.

Everything is done according to what u said except the fact that i my ground does not have a larger gauge thn my power cable.

Will try adding another piece of cable to the ground to increase the gauge tomorrow. Thanks.

Hey I need to ask a similar question....I'll try to follow the steps above, BUT, the whining has only just started to occur?? I completed my system last November and have been enjoying it ever since. Out of nowhere, I was taking my line up to the mountains last week and on the way back it started squeeling ridicoulsly loud! After I check everything again tonight or over this weekend, can anybody recommend why it would just begin to crack it for no apparant reason?

Check cabling and make sure that none has deteriorated over time, could be one cause. Another cause (which happened to me in my old car) is that your alternator is failing, worst case scenario, but it happened to me. Cruising along one day all good, then I get whining BAD through the speakers. Tested EVERYTHING in the end was a dodgy alternator

Also to the original poster, in my 33 I had used the bracket where the battery wire was earthed to and it caused whine, I then took the earth wire off that and took the carpet out of my boot. Under that there is a bolt on the left side next to the spare tire, i took that bolt off sanded back to bare metal and earthed my amp there. Voila! Whine went away.

Corrosion, this is why I prefer to apply some clearcoat over the earthing cable when I ground the Amp, so that corrosion isn't going to be problem.

It will either be corrosion or a loose wire.

Hey,

Just rewired everything today and still having problems with whining (every 5-10s)... reving the car didnt seem to effect the whining.

Heres what i did:

Wired remote wire on the other side of the car (away from RCA)

Wired power so that it the furthest possible distance (1ft @ amp) from RCA cables

Wired ground with larger gauge than power with at least 1 ft from RCA cables

Amp is a 1400w system

Speakers are 700w each (x2)

Just realised that the amp cables i bought were for 1200w and amp is 1400w....

i increased the gauge of the ground cable significantly but it didnt affect the whining at all.

Will chaning my power cable so that it has a greater capacity solve my problem? or it shouldn't make a difference when it comes to these problems?

thats funny you should say that revving the car dosen't effect the whining. if it is alternator whine, the noise should get louder when you rev the engine.

does the noise come around every 5-10 seconds or is it continuous? aslong as the RCA cables are run down the drivers side and the rest of your wiring is down the passenger side it should be fine.

having good grounding points is a must like everyone else has said and the larger guage wire for the battery ground is also a must.

the RCA cables are the big thing i have found with the alternator whine. maybe selling off your current cables and getting the correct ones for your amp (if they are rated that way) will help. i know i changed my cables to extra insulated ones i think they were (they were more expensive anyway, rated higher) and the whine dropped abit, but it is still there because i have my cables on the passenger side. just can't be stuffed pulling them out atm.

I've checked all the cables last night and i've found the source but not really the problem!? please help somebody!?

The buzzing whining noise coming from the speakers is only coming from my rear speakers and boot speakers that run off my 4 channel amp. I have a 2 channel, 4 channel and mono block amplifyer all stacked on top of each other. last night when i took out the fuze for the 4 channel amp there was no more squeeling! the other speakers and amplifyers are fine. so i put the fuze back in and played the music with NO car running and there was also no squeeling.

I'm finding this really odd! i've recently had a problem with my mono block amp blowing red smoke and they replaced it practically on the spot, but everythings been running fine for a while then it's just started so i don't get it! all the cables are running with each other and the battery is in the boot so its not a 'run opposite side of car' thing either. if i take the amp back and say theres a problem, they'll test it (not in a car) and it'll be fine as it runs good without the car running.

any help on this would be greatly appreciated please, thanks!
