Enthusiast Vs Hoon

Recommended Posts

I agree with all of the above.. the people that clap you for being a hero and give you hand signs suggesting you slow down are the best.. especially when your doing 40 in a backstreet.. haha

I would say the current increase in concern is 100% the medias fault tho. Back 10 years ago you wouldn't get grief from the public like this unless you dropped a burnout on their face.. :worship:

But as we all know.. the world is going to shit.. lol :)

I don't think you can win either way in an import - people will automatically label you a hoon regardless. Funny though that the majority of R34's, R33's, R32's ect i see on my daily drive to work sit in the same lane doing under the speed limit generally taking it fairly easy - in other words they seem to have little to prove.

Personally having owned over 10 performance cars I have never been pulled over, hassled, threatened ect. I reckon it comes down to how you drive or more precisely when you choose your moments.

We have a winner! :)

A point i have been trying to get across to a lot of people for a long time. The same people who are surprised when they get caught speeding on Warragul Road, Princess Hwy etc..

I like this thread - nice one. There's some very valid points above, especially:

"To the public anyone who doesnt drive a BMW, Merc, shitbox or como is a hoon. Your an Enthusiast if you drive a classic.."

That's too right. I especially blame the media and "anti-hooning" commercials for what people make of skyline/silvia/180 and WRX drivers. They make it sound as if only skylines are hoon vehicles and that you can only ever kill youself in a skyline or anything esle with a turbo. Most people don't realise that depending on conditions you only have to be travelling at 60km/h to kill yourself and all cars reach that speed....so yeh, it is a bit unfairly biased towards imported Nissans mainly.

I too believe it depends on age, what the guy is wearing (shirt, cap, sunnies etc) and how the car looks. You get the performance look....and you get the tosser fully sic stylish look (with duff duff and salad dishes for rims)

Yes, what is the go with Magna drivers - can someone explain that lol? Maybe they think that their VRX is a sports car?

You guys get anti-hoon commercials?

Who's to say what an enthusiasts car is? To me 90% of modified cars look like a dogs breakfast...but because the guy/girl has put a lot of effort (enthusiasm) into the car they are "enthusiasts".

Hooning is the behaviour of the driver not the car, sadly the 2 cross over far to often.

So you can be a hoon that is a car enthusiast and visa-versa, but who can tell from a far?.

Pretty happy so far that the 'little finger' ads haven't depicted a Skyline etc.

RTA seem to be concentrating on their perception of Hoon cars which just happen to be 2 other brands that I'm not familiar with.

Best to leave it at that...

What I don't get is that nobody in that ad is actually doing any perceivable speeding,

a guy doing a burnout, a kid cutting off a pedestrian, and another kid who looks like he barely has pubes doing a pissweak powerslide.

But then it says speeding no-one thinks big of you? :(

In general people appreciate my r34, only once did I see an old lady at an intersection and I was passing by going the speed limit and she spat in my direction and mouthed off some words...

I smiled, gave the finger and carried on :)

Hahahah that top gear Ad is great ;)

..now I need to find a novelty finger extension :D

In regards to the discussion, I do have to say I think it's a minority or people in Imports that do tarnish the Image for the rest of us..

I see this "ful sik" (actually the number plates!) v35 tail gating some poor sod every time I'm coming home from work.. it's a joke..

It's that sort of Behavior that makes me shake my head..

I'm glad someone brought this up.

As a nation we are into our sports, no one can deny this.

A big part of that is motorsport, V8 supercars, etc... Aussie built sedans (FPV and HSV models) have more power in recent years than they ever have, as a response to consumer demand

So why is all that encouraged but in the last few years this word "HOON" has come up, and suddenly everyone who craves horsepower is some kind of second rate citizen, P Plater can't drive turbo cars, and it is now LEGAL for police to confiscate and even CRUSH someone's car!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone else think this is INSANE!!!!

I'm 26, I live and breathe cars, why is it OK to be a motoring enthusiast, or into American Muscle or even locally made V8's but as soon as people see a Jap car or hear a blow-off valve we're suddenly hoons and deserve to have our cars stolen by police.

I think it's disgusting

interesting thread.. well here at least, I hop in the R32 with some rather obviously non standard bits on it (nothing dangerous mind you), and cops dont even look at me, I get waved thru breatho's, the biggest hassle is V6 Commodore bogans trying to race me at every single set of traffic lights, or people staring at me like i'm an idiot because my car can take a corner so much quicker than theirs.

I take the SS for a spin, and i get cops giving dirty looks, V6 bogans trying to race me at every set of lights as well as Ford drivers, LS1 drivers and otherr Holden v8 drivers, and the neighbours complaining to my old man about the noise of it. I also notice a lot of import drivers I know suddenly start snobbing me.

I think driving style plays a part, but I think noise is a big deal as well - my v8 runs a straight through exhaust whereas the skyline is legally quiet and the suspension is set bang on 10cm off the ground, the main thing I notice is that Joe Public and police seem to think that loud/lowered cars of any type = hoon, anything quiet and not stupidly low ok, unless it has P plates or 3000w of stereo full ball lol.

Well mate if you've got an exhaust that's that loud what do you expect. Does it HAVE to be THAT loud?? I don't mean to flame a bit but you're definitely asking for it with the dirty looks and what not..

Yeah it's a matter of personal opinion, I can live with the Skyline being quiet, but the V8 just sounds... wrong imo, ironically I got defected only once and that was for having a headlight out of all things, living in NSW and driving mainly in VIC helps with that - twice the paperwork! Btw i hate my redneck neighbours so I dont really care if I wake them up every morning :D

On the same topic, a mate who drives a HR31 Passage with a NEO motor in it has been harassed and had the car searched by the police after some wanker had been ringing them up telling them he'd been 'drifting' around the town and that his car was heavily modified, they interrogated him over the power to weight ratio and abused him but couldn't find anything wrong with the car but threatened to really come down on him if they kept hearing complaints, was quite unfair considering he drives around like a granny.

Prior to this a R34 GT-T got searched in the local autobarn carpark for drugs 'randomly', dont know if the same person was behind both, of course some moron in a R33 had to go screaming past at 100km/h + in a 60 zone at the same time just to make us all look really bad.

apparently anyone can dob in people to this hotline?

I still drive around a lot, but it makes me kinda paranoid!

Tyre smoke, Excessive speed and generally driving like your on Ecstasy is what I see as hooning...

I've had people complain that I "exited my street speeding" I told them to f*ck off and that just because my car gets to the speed limit quicker than there piece of shit doesn't mean i was speeding... I wasn't 1) racing anyone 2)loosing control of tyres or car 3) breaking the speed limit so what did I do wrong?

I had a cop try and impound me for having the diff lock in my commo when doing a u turn, ended up copping a no seatbelt fine to get out of having my car towed... this was at 5am on my way to work, I even said to the cop that had i been attempting to do a burnout that they would have heard engine noise/seen smoke or a mark on the road, but apparently not. Dosen't really improve my view of Victoria Police.

Yeh I know that some police give themselves a bad name...

Just as a few members with SAU can give the enthusiasts here a bad name too...

I wish for some latitude really...

...Like the time my father went up to the Cop Shop to get his car licence in Cairns. He rocked up to the attending officer for his theory and practical (done then at the same time).

The copper immediately started to write out and sign the form at which Dad said, "What aren't you going to test me?"

Copper says, "Look I've been watching you ride your BSA around here for the past 3 years!!"

Now if a copper gave me some slack like that, I'd forgive the Campsie Police for talking into a mobile 2X, whilst driving a Paddy.

Cheers, Terry

    • That's true. However, this problem has started since the tuning. First time with the return journey from the tuning. But yes, the pipe was clogged with dirt and rust. That was certainly due to age
    • Great info @tidi0x  Will definitely be handy for others and maybe me if I decide to keep the shit box H pattern.
    • Bumping this up one last time.... I wanted to follow up on the clutch slave issue. I realized that what the issue comes down to is the pocket is flat milled, and the cylinder does not want rest flat. So in order to mount it correctly you will need to make a spacer for the fingers so the cylinder is floating. I took two plates of aluminum, drilled some holes and was good. I did still need to make the relief cuts in the bell housing, as even with the spacer the bleed section still interferes. The OE bell housing the mounting holes are raised from the housing.
    • If the event in USA goes ahead will be interesting as it seems the rules will get more cars over here. Apparently the track is laguna seca too. Yeah s15, if I get a the lower dash trims, centre console and change front cross member to standard LCA position will fit clubsprint. See how rules are as i would rather do complete widebody than a bolt on flare to run the 295 with proper clearance.
    • If the car is legal height I can't see it being an issue. Found a thread on reddit that might offer some insight.   I got a ticket from a copper in QLD for my S15 being too low. They had this wheel thing on a stick that they put under the car and it hit my exhaust. Anyhow went to an exhaust shop to get the exhaust tucked up/hung a little higher and I wound the coilovers up a smidge. Don't think I even had to go back to the police station unlike when I got defected for having a carbon bonnet when I brought the S15 from the ACT to QLD and had to replace it and then rock up at a police station and have a yougish female officer who knew nothing about cars confirm that I had changed bonnets. Should have just painted the carbon bonnet yellow to match the rest of the car lol
