There are a few type of write off's.

1) Where your car is obviously too damaged to repair

2) Where the value of the repairs is a certain % or more of the value of your car.

I believe a repairable write off can be road registered. You just need to go through all the appropriate steps for registration and the authorities to check that the car is safe for the roads.

writes off can never be registered - parts only

repairable writeoffs can be registered after inspection however you must have all receipts for parts that are purchased for the repair or they wont sign off the paperwork. I believe the registered writeoff scheme is more related to reducing the use of stolen parts, then the quality of the repairs. cost of the inspection is about $450?

theres a formular they use to decided if its a writeoff, or repairable write off. Usally writeoffs have bad structual damage, and reapirable writeoff dont but the insurance company would have to pay too much to fix it so they just pay it out.

also if a car is more then 15 years old then they dont get listed as a writeoff / repairable writeoff so better to buy something 1993 and older as you dont have to go thru the above bullshite.

This is from my experience and not in anyway garanteed as correct
