Recently I had a drive in a 350Z, a car which I previously would not have considered owning myself.

This got me thinking and I figured I would pose you people the question.... What is most important when you are choosing a new ride??

for me buying/upgrading to something newer, id be looking at what i need it for

- daily driving

- towing

- passenger comfort

- long trips

hard to get the BEST of all them, but there can be a happy medium achieved.

I vote for all of the above. I buy my toys for the overall potential they have ... how many boxes gets ticked for my vote to buy it.

I guess firstly looks does it for me. When you gotta look at the car/bike everyday, you want something that appeals to you.

Next would be a balance of performance and handling.

Then it would be a balance of power and modifying potential.

Economy doesn't matter much to me anymore. With fuel going thru the roof, we're f**ked either way, so we may as well enjoy it.

:D

Built the 33 for Handling and Responsive power.

Great car around town, Fantastic in the hills. Best of both worlds But also added some wheels for a bit of style.

Dont like the R33 in the way of looks but the Engines, Driveline and brakes are fantastic.

I definately factored a couple into my search for a car, i went for looks, interior comfort, grunt, modifying potential and handling. Its not the BEST of everything, but it has the basis for increase in all of the above field. Economy and overall ride comfort i dont have, but thats what you get when you go turbo with stiff coils!

There was a V35 Skyline on J-spec for $24k l&c, 2003, leather, 6 speed man, brembos. Might be something for you to look at!

I chose my car for Modifying potential (cause i get bored real quick with gutless cars), Styling (absolutely love the look of 33's) and the fact that the engine driveline etc is built nice and strong.

Should have an option something like "a bit of everything" - thats what I like in a car a bit of everything - power, looks, handling, comfort, modifying potential - the R33 has power, looks real good, handles well, is comfortable enough and plenty of modifying potential...

7years ago when I bought the R32 I definitely didn't buy it for the looks; I actually thought it looked kind of funny.

Driving the car it felt awesome; it felt well balanced and I knew it had modding potential.

The VS 5ltr 5speed in comparison regardless of its whiteline suspension and swaybars felt crap and understeery compared to the tight little R32.

So for myself... Handling/Braking... general dynamics... modding potential.

Looks.. doesn't bother me. Sound does. Could never really bring myself to owning and modding a 4banger.

Turbo 6, V8 or good ol Rotor.

looks majorly deciding factor, performance what helped make me accept the price tag though.

actually thought the R32 was slow if anything when i started liking it from gran turismo original days(silly me was looking at non turb gts) but then slowly i began to understand the GTR is quite a beast.

Well I used to have an R31. It was my first car and I loved it so. And I was a car noob, but spoke to lots of dudes and ended up spending about what I paid for the car in mods. It drove awesome. The aus r31's are truly a very well balanced car. Problem was it had a tendency to understeer, it looked rather boxy, and had one of the worst interiors since the pontiac fiero.

Then I saw the R32 GTR..

A friend told me about the godzilla, and I didnt have a clue what he was on about, he showed me the 20 odd magazine articles he'd collected and I was sold. The 32's always been my favourite looker of the GTR's..it has the sexiest arse, an aggressive nose (not as aggressive as the 34 id admit), and has the sexiest side profile..especially with those flared guards... its the smallest, the one which started the GTR pwn trend and the technology in it made me want it. Truth be told I'd have settled for a GTS-4, but I told my friends that I was almost certain to modify it and they said 'just get a gtr ffs'. I've had it for a year, but I wanted it for around 5. Its been everything I wanted in most parts of your poll... its not the most luxurious or economical car, I got it mainly for all over excellent gadgets, looks, power and modification. Best thing tho, you can tune it to how you want it. Road or Track, its a winner, whatever the application.

So I guess put me down for 4/6... could care less about economy or comfort :P

I looked at buying a 350Z or a RX8 when they first came out - loved both - except for the complete lack of power. I just can't get over a car that looks and feels so good, but has crap all power with little room for modifying (short of strapping a twin turbo kit to one - and then you are for more $$$ total than an R34GTR). I would be bored sh!tless driving around all day with no turb RB power.

Andrew i was reading yesterday the Rx8 has gone through a facelift and wait for it now has 7kw more i dont know why they didnt make the Rx8 extreme sales would of picked up 100fold

now comes with 19" alloys mmmmm and new bumpers but not enough power increase they should of made it 200kw @ the treads @ least that would compare to alot on the road oh and bilstein suspension too

Handling for me, but it's gotta have the power to need tight handling, quick and nimble FTW.

Funnily enough I *may* be in the market for a new car soon after a P Plater in a Kingswood decided to "dance" with me on the weekend.

Edit: No one was hurt and all that.

Awesome.. good discussion going.

I knew everyone would say that they wanted a balance of all those aspects but what I was really getting at is what tops the list!! What does it absolutely HAVE to do above all else??

The 350 Z was an awesome car to drive with comfortable interior, wicked handling and the brembos are great too, BUT it doesn't have the grunt that my GTR does. It is much better in a number of ways but the GTR is an animal with massive grunt and 4wd etc...

HENCE, could I sell the GTR for a newer/ more comfortable car (not necessarily a 350) and do without the animal???

Honestly... I don't know.

I am not rushing out tomorrow or anything, just trying to work out whats important! I love the GTR, but sometimes wish it was a little newer etc.

    • But, do I have to? 😬
    • While doing my tailgate struts I found some rust. Also replaced my bonnet struts. Such a cool satisfaction with that job.
    • So I removed as much as I could from both sides. The shop vac did a great job of clearing 99% of it. I got it all as clean as I could and then absolutely drenched the whole lot in the rust converter. Tonight or tomorrow I'll hammer it again. The cavity must be close to 400mm in length and surprisingly I was able to get it right to the back.  I'll quickly reassemble and then pretend I never saw it. I'll post pics (for me to ignore later) soon.
    • Yea she is a hoot to drive
    • I have always resisted the urge to go silly. 8" wide wheels and street friendly spring rates? Check. (Let's not talk about the steadily increasing spread of spherical joints across my suspension!!) Stock turbo, run at 12 psi? Check. Lasted for~?10 years before it died. Highflow put on rather than seizing the opportunity to go G45. You don't need 300 rwkW, let alone the more massive numbers that seem to be essential these days, to have a car that is already way too powerful and fast for a streeter. ~250rwkW is fine. I've never exceeded 200, although I will sneak up above it if and when I manage to get my finger out and do what needs to be done to use the highflow's capacity. You don't need $10k worth of CF bits glued onto the outside. You don't need razor sharp ankle cutting front splitters. You don't need the car to be 2" off the ground. You don't need flawless paint, mirror finished wheels, brand new indicator lenses, etc etc. All these things just make the car impractical and will cause you pain when they get damaged, which is inevitable for a street car. A few nice additions are good. Good seats are good. A nice stereo is good. A/C is good! (46° on the road yesterday and my A/C is degassed again. Was moderately traumatic driving home!) The main reason I stick with a mildly modified old Skyline is that I have had it for >25 years, the mods are the rolling result of 25 years of things dying and being upgraded opportunistically, coupled with a few "just 'coz" ones. And I hate almost all modern cars. If I was a young buck starting out now.... I wouldn't bother. Cars have a few years left where there is any possibility of interest or fun. Thereafter there will be no such thing allowed or possible. Any time, money and effort spent now on a project would just be a waste.
