Hey guys... I drive a R33 Skyline, GTS-T, stock. I have had it for a couple of years and was all into it at the start, until I decided to be a moron, speed on the freeway and lose my license for a year, and since I've had 1 point for a year after my suspension, I had to be an angel and decided to keep any mods to the car as minimum as the sound system, so please don't point and boo too much.

Now that the history lesson is over the question is...

On a stock R33 Skyline, the BOV has the hose that recycles the the air back into the turbo inlet. The questions...

Does removing the hose improve the sound that comes out when you come off the throttle?

Is it bad to remove that hose (for the car that is).

(I've always wondered)

Thanks.

Yeh the cool pschhh sound everyone loves is a novelty. It draws so much attention to your car and makes me afraid to use heavy throttle.

I'm chasing a GTR bov atm so i can still have high boost and keep it quiet. I too have been on a suspension for the past 9 months (about to get it back!!!) and don't ever want to loose it again.

I did read that some engines would overfuel if the hose is not attached so... I had to ask if the RB baby was one of them.

But since thats the case... Is there any way to make the noise a bit louder without massive mods? I do have a mate who's stock skyline bov sound is quite a bit louder than mine. Is there something with it or just a random freak of... nature? :P

and3_3, because my car is stock, attracting the wrong attention doesn't really bother me that much. Lifting my hood would simply make cops feel like they've wasted their time.

Thanks guys and erm... Pod filters are illegal right? I do remember a mate who has a 33 tell me a while back that he has to conceal his with some aluminium cover or something. Just wanna know whether I should get a story going when I get pulled over or just smile and let em check.

depends on where you are...im from queensland and i know your allowed a pod filter here, it just has to be supported i think....

Your allowed to have a pod filter her in queensland but it has to be fully enclosed.

AFAIK if you are in NSW, you can fit a pod filter as long as it's enclosed in a box. I *think* the rule is one intake mod, so that means to stay legal you can fit either a pod *or* an intercooler. Better check that one up though. I'm 99% sure about the pod though - I have a friend who got defected big time and decided to go fully legal, and he maintains an enclosed pod is legal.

After having an Apexi pod fitted to mine (non enclosed), I would definitely recommend putting it in a box because it's so damn noisy! Yes it sounds cool from outside the car but you can hear the annoying "sucking" noise inside the car way too much and most people just ask "what's wrong with your car?"... However in a box it probably halves the sound and it's quite acceptable inside.

The Apexi is definitely recommended. Proven to flow the best and also provides the best filtration (some Poms did this test a while ago, a quick search should find the test). I picked mine up off Ebay for just over $120 shipped. When you let off the throttle you will hear what sounds like a very soft externally vented BOV, which I assume is the sound you're after?

Bugger it, I don't need mine anymore, I'm going to sell my car and can't be bothered refitting it - I'll give it to you for $60 if you want - it's in pretty much perfect condition. Only had it on for about a year anyway. PM me if you're interested!

Auto Salon Magazine did a test last year some time (issue 51) with a lot of pod air filters and the apexi power intake pod, which i assume is the apexi pod filter you are talking about, and it did pretty crap. Its flow was 533.3cfm and its filtration wasnt the greatest either. For $125 you would expect a hell of a lot better.

The pod filter that actually won with a flow of 601.2cfm and a pretty damn good filtration was a 3A Racing pod filter that can be picked up on ebay for around $28.95.

Just because it is a well known brand doesnt mean its any good. I know which one i use and reccommend and i keep nearly a hundred dollars in my pocket

OK, here's a test comparing various pod filters, but I still don't think it's the one I was thinking about: http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

And here's an interesting post on another forum: http://www.twincam.info/index.php?showtopic=29632

They rated the 3A Racing filter as excellent however it wasn't tested, and as you can see, the Apexi (Power Intake I presume) also rated at pretty much top of the list. However, they don't provide filtration results. Don't forget that the purpose of an air filter is to actually filter the air! :D

Obviously, the test I was looking at was a number of years old and there have been new products and developments during that time. I'm always a bit dubious about buying a brand that I've never heard of before, especially off Ebay! Although it looks like your test has recommended it so it looks like a good alternative.

BTW do you know how the Sards rate? I haven't been able to find any info on them.

    • Hi All,  just thought I would provide an update as I know smooth (Matt) was on this forum from 2003.    my brother Matthew passed away end of may 2024 at the age of 41 from liver failure. I am not sure how many of his original team krazy friends are still on here or active but thought it reasonable to let the forum know.    if you have any photos or pictures it would be great if you could share them.    it took me a while to work out he was active on here.    thanks so much

    • 😜 hopefully we get this instead of a new R36 GTR due to recent financial problems at Nissan. Nismo to sell a complete kit with RB26 and driveline. All starts making sense (ok maybe not) once the Nissan Leaf's (Leaves?) with stuffed EV motors/batteries hit the market cheap
    • Hi guys , have had allot of time for SAU and has helped me out heaps in the past so I thought I would give it a go , I have my QM1 white NUR for sale 1 of 156 examples built by Nissan. Serious personal messages please if interested and details will be provided , asking 500k
    • Oof. Could be worse I guess. I suppose they haven't put any effort into ally suspension parts or CF panels, seats, etc. So they could probably pull about half of that back out of the car. Not like a bunch of other EVs that already have CF everything and roll the scales at ~2t.
