the vl was never a good design, it took tom walkinshores race team a whole year of development and millions of dollars to make that car not only look good but reduce the drag effecent low enough to be competetive agianst the likes of the jaguar, cosworths and even the volvo's let alone a nissan skyline.

1. Audi Quattro Sport

2. Skyline R32 GTR

3. Mazda MX5

4. Ferrari F40

5. Peogeot 205 Gti

6. Mercedes 190E Evo III

7. BMW E30 M3

8. Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500

9. Holden VL "Walkinshaw"

10. Subaru Brumby 4WD

All chosen because they suceeded admirably in their intended function and weren't run-ons like 911 Porsche etc....

I have a real soft spot for cars from the 80s. I've been lucky enough to own or drive many of the interesting ones that were available in Australia.

From the era, the Ferrari 288GTO would be the one that excites me most in terms of looks and character. However, I'll never be able to afford one, so it's a bit irrelevant.

In my opinion, the best cars from that era are the ones that still feel like competent products today.

The following ten are all cars that I've driven in the last few years and have still been a pleasure:

1. 1988 Honda CR-X. Still looks sweet, revs willingly and corners well.

2.1989 Lexus LS 400. Amazingly quiet and refined for an old car. And so much cheaper to own than Jaguars, BMWs and Mercs.

3. 1987 BMW M3. Fantastic, balanced FR layout, solid body, comfortable seats and willing performer.

4. 1989 Mazda MX5. Again, a delightful FR chassis, sharp steering, pleasant 1.6 engine, cheap and reliable.

5. 1981 Audi Quattro. Good looks, nice throb from 5 cylinder

6. 1988 Toyota MR 2 AW11. Excellent ride/handling compromise (thanks to Lotus), great engine and gear change .

7. 1989 Nissan GT-R R32. Fantastic performance, reasonable size, good seats, precise gear change, better than its race track rivals.

8. 1987 Mercedes Benz 300E. Solid, well made saloon. Very good at everything, bad at nothing.

9. 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. Developed thoroughly for '89 with 250bhp, superb handling and brakes, excellent build quality.

10. 1985 VK Group A Commodore. Really needs the 5 speed gear box, can sound good, fun FR handling, not too big.

(I haven't included the Mercedes 190E EVO II because it wasn't launched until early 1990)

The most over rated cars from the period are:

1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9. Drove a low mileage one recently and it felt flimsy, slow and harsh. Plus the gear change is crook.

1987 Ferrari 328 GTS. Such a gap between image and reality with these. Uncomfortable, expensive to maintain, not super quick.

1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth. A really cheap feeling car, old school turbo response, flimsy body.

interesting list sanjuu-ni, but are we talking about car design (aesthetics)? or judging it on how the car handles/performs in a straight line..

if thats the case then ill also back the 84-89 Toyota MR2 AW11

and the Lancia Delta S4 for its pure insanity

"Unofficial figures claimed the S4 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h on gravel in just 2.3 seconds." Considering that was 21 years ago (much older technology than now) AND on gravel AND out of a 1.8L that is FAST.

EDIT: and R3380Y, the 911 is most certainly not a 1980s design, just an 80s facelift if anything :(

BMW E30 coupe shape, for damn sure! What a hot design. The M3 is just so good looking, and the 325iS is just as nice with the MTech2 bodykit. Although that might've only come out in early 90s. Not too sure. I'll get some pics when I'm home.

That white FC RX7 above it so hot! Love it.

    • Yep, that was one of the things we learned fast in the past with our MX5. When you drive with the top down, you are effectively standing out in the sun, 100% of the time, and not getting in any shade (because roads aren't shaded generally!). Just like standing out in the middle of a field on a sunny 27C day is a bit of a bad plan, so is sitting in a MX5 without sun protection.
    • I also just ordered some Frankenstein bolts and side mounts to fit a hard top Just in case I do find one, basically so it doesn't need to be fixed to the car with only the front latch.......and then gaffa tape to keep it in place for the RTN journey from wherever I get it
    • If your temps are fine now, you probably won't have any issues with where your vents are as they don't look right up at the windscreens high pressure area, so any differences when giving it the beans for extended happy laps would be minimal, but, they should vent heaps when stuck in traffic  Much like how that reverse cowl on my SS let "visible" heat out when stationary, but, because it was basically at the windscreen my coolant temps on the Hwy actually raised because air was being fed into it at speed (110kph), to only come back down to around 90° when I got off the Hwy And your 100% correct about the NC currently not needing vents, but, if I was to add a turbo, and a oil cooler and intercooler in front of the condenserand radiator, and then take it to the track???? It is apparently a recommend requirement if I don't want to worry about coolant or oil temp issues, but, any of the above are possible scenarios, over time As it sits now, with the triple pass radiator and stock air conditioning system, I have absolutely no issues with either temps or air conditioning efficiency, I've been basically daily driving thie car for the last month, both on the Hwy, and peak hour, bumper to bumper traffic, but, that's pretty much expected from basically a standard engine  Talking about no issues daily driving, it was 39° the other day and I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the M5 and then M7, with the top down, and with the air conditioning blowing nice cold air on my feet, balls, and face, well, there was one issue, my head and arms got pretty sun burnt Note to self: leave a hat and sunscreen in the car for such days 🤣
    • I would agree, unless you need something specific to the HV motor/battery side repaired or investigated, any mechanic will be able to perform normal services, but if you prefer, maybe look for a mechanic who regularly services/repairs Nissans, the VQ engines are pretty common in the Nissan lineup.  Sorry, I can't make any suggestions, I don't live in Vic.
    • Some of them keep working fine. 9 out of 10 of them end up causing an absolute misery bleeding the system and get thrown on the workshop floor in a tantrum and never thought about again because they were never really needed and just added crap to the car that we could have done without. Same-same with HICAS, A-LSD, and various other stupidities that over eager 10x engineers thought we had to have.
