wouldnt want i phone to get stolen... there goes ur fone, ipod and gps haha

The N95 does all that as well, but atleast you can use a pirated version of tomtom on the N95, unlike the iphone.

fk all i want my ph too do is make and recieve calls im happy with my basic 4yr old nokia suits me . if i want to take pics i will use a camera . the way some people carry on over a bloody phone you think its the end of the world if u dont have the latest greatest gizmo . or it's like a status symbol u will have too do better than a ph to impress me :-)

well i like to make video calls to my wife so i can see my son while im at work seeing as i work a rotating roster and on some weeks only get to see him for half an hour a day for a whole week. So what suits you unfortunately doesnt suit others.

Not everyone is afraid of the latest technology and does actually find some use for it.

the way some ppl carry on when a discussion does not interest them but they think everyone wants to hear what they have to say like there a status symbol or something you will have to do better then blurting out bull shit to impress me.

Its a thread about an iphone, you have no interest in the topic what so ever so f**k off and dont come back, im sure there is thread around here some where about how hot cave women are, try that one.

So I've been playing around with my iPhone for a week and a bit now, sorry about the late pics...

To put it bluntly I have a strong dislike for Apple applications on a windows platform. On OSX they're fine, but on Windows they suck balls. So next thing I did was setup a minimal install of XP on a VMware virtual machine to setup iTunes on. VMWare allows you to pass on your USB devices too, so I could plug in my iPhone to my PC normally and it'll show up as a Camera/storage device. Fire up VMware and it recognises it as an iPhone. Sweet. Fuck you Apple, and your shitty bonjour and ipodservices.

My phone came preloaded with 2.0.2 firmware. I got the phone from the Optus shop at lunchtime, and by the end of lunch I was running WinPWN to jailbreak the 2.0.2 firmware. Pretty straightforward application, only supports up to 2.0.2 so that was kinda lucky on my part. Tricky bit is getting VMware to catch the Recovery mode drivers and pass them onto itunes.

After a lil while of pissfarting around (read: 1 hour) I thought I'd try the new 2.1 firmware. It was a matter of jumping on one of the macs at work and creating a custom firmware using the 2.1 image.

And OMG the 2.1 firmware upgrade just makes the phone so much better at... surprisingly... being a phone. 3G reception is a lot better, as is volume and noise filtering.

After that, it was off to set up an SSH client so I could SSH into the iPhone to tinker around.... then came the sFTP server... and more recently the VNC server.

Now I'm all for touchscreen and all, but goddamn that keyboard on the vertical mode is a pain to use. I have pretty skinny fingers, so I can only imagine how hard it'd be for the average fatty. VNC kinda solves that. Now I can just VNC into my iPhone and either use the mouse to simulate my finger or use the touch screen and navigate, then when it comes time to type something I just use my keyboard to type it in. Absolutely-fuckin-brillinat for typing out SMS's (and I SMS like a madkent cos I'm on that unlimited SMS deal, and hate talking to people on the phone).

Anyways... some screenshots:

I've just finished applying to become a developer with Apple (managed to convince work to pay for some books and a licensing fee... on top of subsidising my phone bill payments AND being able to claim the phone as a tax expense). So hopefully by the end of the year I'll have made a few Apps.

While I'm a LOT more comfortable developing for the jailbroken iPhone (cos I can just code in python) than using Objective-C, work seems more keener to get a few applications on the market, as a test, so me and a couple of other guys are head up that foray. It won't be a calculater copy or flashlight app, I promise. In the meantime I'm also gonna dabble a lot more in porting over some of our web applications over to iPhone friendly and optimised mobile sites using the Webkit framework... fun.

In the meantime, I'm forced to use a Mac now at work cos the iPhone SDK only works on OSX (fuck you Apple and your vice like grip on the testicles of all your developers)... so far I've been getting away with a VMware image of OSX Leopard, but I think its a little too clunky (not to mention contraband according to Apples testicluar vice grip manifesto), so time to get work to maybe get me a Powerbook or some shit like that :P

Things I hate about the iPhone:

  • Crappy reception
  • Home button DOES NOT END A CALL, it instead minimises the call and puts you in the menu. The number of times I've finished a call by pressing the button (I'm sorry Apple, I'm only used to 99.99% of the phones on the market that have an "End Call" button) only to find that the people I was on the phone with we listing to the rustlings of my loins after I put the phone in my pocket.
  • Alarm is not loud enough. My old K800i with the hacked firmware and sound profile could wake up my neighbour in the morning (and deplete half its battery in the process). I've been late to work 3 times in the last week or so because of the pissy little speaker or sound profile on the iPhone
  • iTunes. By far the shittiest program ever to grace an operating system.
  • 2.x firmware and its iPod storage format. Why on god's name would I want my perfectly categorised music sorted into 4 letter filesnames in the filestructure? Only slightly more annoying than the fact that the only goddamned application that can upload music to be played by the iPod player is iTunes (see previous point).
  • iTunes stripping out all my ID3 tags from my aforementioned perfectly categorised and tagged music when synching with the iPhone. I can't have multiple artists seperated by a ";" any more... just a retarded iPod application that things "Common" is a different artist to "Common / Taleb Kwali". Stupid non standards compliant media player. Its days are marked... when someone releases a decent media app for jailbroken iPhones (not like apple's gonna let people develop any competing apps to its proprietory stuff), its sooo getting uninstalled.
  • The crApp Store... wtf do I want with a hundred different types of calculators and apps that make the light flash? Quality control my ass.

Anyways, rant over... I do like the iPhone, I like the ability to tinker with it, I love the jailbroken features, being able to SSH into our webserver to run checkups, be able to VNC into my home PC while on the move to make sure my latest episode of Heroes has finished downloading to view when I get home, its a fairly quick hardware setup, and probably the best smartphone on the market now that Google's Android shown itself to be an epic fail. Kinda glad the HTC Dream sucks, validates my reasoning behind jumping the gun and consciously agreeing to a 24 month contract.

Things i want on my iPhone:

  • Doom2 (yeah I have Quake on the iphone, but doom was much cooler... I'll settle for Duke Nukem maybe)
  • A replacement for iPod music player that has the same features, but can read off a normal file structure on the hard drive and adhere to some ID3 conventions
  • A plugin for MediaMonkey (iMonkey is now available, but all it does it remote control your Media Monkey)... I want something that fully integrates into my music cataloging and playing application.
  • Nissan Consult visualisation. I might actually look into this, they've cracked how to use the TX and RX on the iPhone to communicate via serial signals, so making the iPhone hook up to the Nissan ECU shouldn't be that hard. Combine a live reading/logging with the accelerometer and you're cooking with gas.
  • Firefox on the iPhone (haha Safari's nice n all but FF is where my heart is). Although Google Chrome might be in the running down the track as its built on the same Webkit framework that Safari is.
  • Video Calls. Although I've managed to get the video recorder application to record video, something that sends that via 3g would be nice
  • Independence from iTunes. I want to synch my phonebook to my gmail without having to use iTunes (although the whole gmail to iphone via itunes contact synching capability is hot... lets me manage my contact list on a PC and then just synch it, with the added bonus of having a globally accessible backup), or my music with MediaMonkey etc.

oh and for the outside mods... I got an el cheapo docking station off ebay for $15 for work. and by far the best $35 I spent, a Zagg Invisibleshield cover. Completely scratch proofs your iPhone, and is made from a durable plastic that sticks to your phone and won't come off easily, pretty much crystal clear, and adds a bit more grip to the phone (I can put it on my R32 dash and it doesn't slide around... also makes it stick to any vertical mirror :P). Plus one of the best things about the iPhone 3g was its small thin form, screw making it as clunky as a Nokia by putting a thick cover on it.

Here you go Shan - new media player being devloped that may please you.

http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1906

Personally i'm fine with the inbuilt one, pitty i have to convert my mpg/xvids to iphone format first tho, but can understand why. You could also try the app airsharing from appstore, you can upload your files/music/videos direct to it and just play them from in there.

Safari on the iPhone rocks, no other web browser for a phone/pda comes close.. who cares if its called safari or chrome or firefox... functionality/ui/ease of use.

Reception has been fine for me, except for the fact optus 3g network sucks balls...

Home button ending a call - come on, there is a big farken button there the size of a house that says "END CALL"

iTunes - sucks on windows yeah, slow and crap, but the functionality isn't bad...

The Appstore is pretty good - some handy apps on there, once you get past all the crap ones.

And you can jailbreak 2.1 with quickpwn for windows - works great, released by the dev team.

Mine does that anyway, without VMWare, just normally in windows, i'm pretty sure there was an auto-sync option somewhere u can turn off. I plug mine in and fagtunes starts up but it doesn't do anything till I press sync, at the same time it comes up as a camera/storage device in windows.

Had mine for about a month now, haven't jailbroken it yet as I haven't had the need, Everything I have wanted to do I have been able to do without doing it.

Some of the things I like about it:

- Remote Desktop

- The ability to control fagtunes wirelessley which is good for when ur outside and the music is on inside although I wanna find an app that will do it with a better program, I think theres one floating around for winamp/mediaplayer

- The messaging is mad, I haven't had any probs whatseoever with the little keyboard though, the intuitive text is wicked, it doesn't matter 90% of the time if u hit the wrong letter, it comes up with the right word anyway

- Got an app called wififofum for finding wireless networks, possiably the best $4 I have ever spent!

- Safari is wicked to use as far as internet on phones go, would be nice to have some flash support though

Things I don't like:

- No MMS, this is possiably the gayest thing apple have ever done and they do alot of gay shit, and apple excuse, it had email why would u want mms? BECAUSE 99.99% OF THE POPULATION DON'T HAVE EMAIL ON THEIR PHONE IDIOTS!

- The GPS is crap, it's just google maps with the ability to locate where u are, and it doesn't even keep where u are on the screen, when the dot gets to the edge of the screen it just dissapears u have to move the map with ur finger to see the dot again.

- End calling is gay, I always do the same

- The way fagtunes arranges/plays music is crap, I want folders not playlists goddammit!

I dunno if there's ways to fix any of that, someone was talking about an mms app the other day but I haven't looked into it yet. Something I really want for it though is a torrent client, I was looking a couple of weeks ago for one and ppl seem to be working on doing it but as yet haven't been able to find a good one to use. Still it's a wicked phone and I have to say for a 1.3mp camera it takes pretty good photos!

haha I had to have 2.1 the day after it got cracked for the mac. cbf waiting for quikpwn to catch up on windows.

i tried to be smart and extracted the itunes installer package to remove quicktime and just install the drivers and the itunes software... but even the installer checks to make sure you have quicktime and its neanderthal codec installed. I use quicktime alternative, which is so much faster and renders way better.

Kyle, you can do MMS if you jailbreak and install the MMS app (check my screenshot of the first page). I've also got a torrent client on it, although if you open more than 20 connections the phone slows to a crawl. I chucked itunes on VMware cos I didn't want it installed on my normal OS, or Apple's bloatware apps and a million and one services and autoupdaters.

some of the guys on the forum i'm on are working on VLC for iphone so you can play divx etc, which is kind of a pipe dream, as its a purely software based decoder, which won't work too well on an iphone that's already got its resources stretched.

as for the home button, its not really apple's design fault, but moreso just me and pretty much all other mobiles using a button to end a call. habitual i guess.

MMS - try swirlymms if you want mms, it works reasonbly well, costs a few bucks tho, gotta jailbreak for it, which isn't a big deal.

The GPS is a gps chip, it's not turn by turn nav.... but the dot DOES stay in the middle of the screen as long as you don't touch the screen/pan around. The second you pan around it turns off the dot tracking.

well my modded HTC diamond is going along just nicely, cant complain about a thing :P

Yeah great device, apart from the fact it runs windows mobile. I used WM for years, unfortunately the UI isn't even in the same league :)

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
