I'm about to start importing an r34 GT-T and before I make any financial commitments i wanted to know if registering this car in Canberra has any tougher rules than say in Sydney or Melbourne? It will be totally stock (except cd player maybe) and complianced with new tyres most likely.

If its stock then like Teon said you shouldnt have a problem with it. I believe you might need a ID check though, if it is less then 15 years old. The rules for compliance are much tougher for registration aswell, so if you pass compliance and dont change anything it will be ok.

Depends, no-one really polices the compliance... i.e. my importer told me that they only have to put up one prototype, its checked (by DOTARS I believe) and if approved (according to the rules) they are told they can import 20 to the same level (pulled that figure from my @ss) but my point is that the cars aren't individually inspected (except for rego) which means that the importers only need to get the prototype right. If you don't get a good importer, they will only do the most obvious and in your face type things like tyres. So no matter what they tell you, bleed everything (fluids and oils), change every filter and check everything thoroughly. There is no way on this earth that my importer had bled/replaced the brake fluid, yet this is one of the rules. Not that it bothered me because we always drop all oil and fluids out of any new/used car and put our own in so we know its okay.

See if you can get your importer to guarantee it will pass for rego

DOTARS is now known as Dept of Infrastructure and blah blah blah short novel blah blah (lets call them Infrastructure) and you should get more info from reading some of the links on this page
