I read the docs again. They look great (on the condition you don't have an R32 GTST hey Benny ;) )

Also I saw in the newsletter the Matt Close car is up for sale. Would be nice if you had the $$$! Does anyone know what he's getting next (I presume he's building something new and faster??)

Yup. Biggest issue is putting a cage in one, super time consuming and difficult to do.

He was saying it might be easier to actually "up spec" from a base vette as they don't have the plywood floor.

I've been told it's a 30k job to put a cage in a plywood one properly/safely.

Bit late, but to clarify license for the phillip island and presumably other targa class rounds. I previously had National Circuit and downgraded to clubman circuit because it was cheaper and covered what I need. CAMS national office confirmed that CC was sufficient for this meet although god knows they could be wrong!

If you are worried about passing a medical this simple you should not be driving in any competitive event anyway....it is very basic.

There is no restrictions having provisional circuit vs national circuit and provisional clubman vs clubman except that you can be refused a start if you haven't qualified (I've never seen this rule enforced).

Looks like I'll be OK to get there but it has been an interesting fortnight (2 new turbs after last day at oran park). Fixed now and seems to be running OK but the car has a lot of work to do in the next 6 weeks (supercars, national supersprint and buller).

It's more the fact that you have to find one of CAMS medico's + part of it is the colersterol test which means fasting and blood tests. I don't deal well without a coffee in the morning!!!

So it's just the annoyance of doing it that bothers me. It's like log booking the car. I got the paper work with the cage but I just can't be bothered with all of the CAMS red tape!

Mind you our good friends at AASA are getting there slowly. Our club days we run with AASA have a lot more red tape and rules than they did when we first started with them so I can see the easiness I have now will probably come to an end one day soon.

yep medical is nothing more than a pita....and $56 of my money. I've never seen anyone fail one, there is a guy down here that we call 'ten tummies', he's probably 150-160kg. And he still navs in Targa (the crew has to move the wheels left to right, as the navigators side wears so bad)

yeah we use aasa because of the lack of obsticles, but I'm sure this will change soon enough (particularly as they have a few incidents and their insurers crack down). but in the meantime we'll keep running events with them.

I figure it's appropriate to give a quick update from the Phillip Island round of the Targa Invitations in this thread.

Update is the racing was great but our day didn't go at all to plan - you probably won't believe this, but Duncan had a bit of bad luck :-|

Today we enjoyed 30 degree temps at the track - nice for the suntan but not for the water temps when something is not quite right in a gtr. Long story short we could have made a very good attempt at a cup of coffee with the water dumped from the radiator after first practice. A second cup was also on the cards after the second dump after qualifying (where Duncan managed to put in 3 laps- one of them semi decent).

After much head scratching - not to mention loss of skin, bloods and burns - a farked radiator cap was thought to be the problem- the bastard wasn't sealing causing massive loss of pressure.

The theory and fix *should* have been tested in race one, however as Duncan pulled onto the track the boost went goodbye. As the blokes were tightening things up after the inspection of the thermostat, it seems some coolant/crap caused some slippage in the bay and a pipe didn't get as much love as needed. Yup, we'd blown an intercooler pipe.

After some afterhours tinkering (and more skin and blood being sacrificed to the car) we *think* it's sorted... touch wood.

Tomorrow is a rolling start and reverse grid so heaps of fun hopefully.

There are some BLOODY QUICK cars out there this week.

Race was won by Mark O'Conner in a Lotus Exige, 2nd was Garwood in his Porker and 3rd was Ray Hislop in the Ford BF Falcon (which also started from pole and set the fastest lap- not bad for a taxi!).

Yeah I was told yesterday that Mark has a new blower on his little buzz box and it now makes some serious mumbo (over 300rwkw's) so that's not all that suprising really. Better luck for tommorrow Dunc!

    • Dragging some reo behind a ute or trailer will smooth out a dirt road, I've used reo a few times to do unsealed road maintenance when we didn't have any plant available  It's best done when the dirt is wet though, and then you just let it dry out for a day to harden up For wetting the dirt I've used some 44 gal drums in a ute or trailer, and a water pump connected to a hose with a old sprinkler tied to the reo to wet the material down whilst spreading Basically just drive slowly up and down the road a few times dragging a few sheets of reo wired together with the sprinkler wetting it all down as you go
    • I did a motokhana years ago with ??Sydney Sporting Car Club???, it was on a grassy paddock and was heaps of fun, I think it was north west Sydney IIRC The old R33 boat was covered in grass and dirt, but nothing that a good wash and detail didn't fix And thinking back, when SAU did the airstrip run in Goulburn years ago, where the old 33 won highest RWD MPH, the quickest RWD ET on the airstrip, and best paint IIRC (before the runs down the airstrip) the damage to the rear quarters from stones flicking up required them the get a respray  I would definitely do a grass motokhana again in the MX5 Who knows someone that owns a farm with a big empty paddock  Liability these days is a big issue though
    • No intention of driving the car the way it's set up now, just wanting to make sure I haven't made any mistakes along the way so that the tune can go smoothly, I don't want to waste anyone's time with stupid issues. And of course I intend to get it towed to the dyno in a completed state 😅 I have the base fuel pressure with the vacuum disconnected set at about 40psi, which I believe is at least relatively close to stock fuel pressure, maybe I'll have a fiddle with the reg and see what happens. For all I know I could be wasting my time with this and I should just plumb it in and see what the tuner reckons. I just find it a bit strange that it seems to be under so much load just free revving, but maybe that's just a result of the turbo slowing down the exhaust gasses and making a restriction in the flow, with no boost to compensate.

    • Right, so is the fuel pressure the same as it was previously? If not, well, it's not going to work well. I can understand the theory I assume you are going for, which is: "Run it N/A, and if I have the original AFM, and same amount of fuel and intake air as previously, the fact there's a turbo in my exhaust should still make it run" Which it... might? Provided you don't actually change how much air or fuel is going into the car.. or getting out. But if you have changed that, all bets are off. What is the purpose to even have the car run this way? To get it to a tuner? And if the goal is to limp it to a tuner, you're still going to what - plumb up a whole intercooler system and new intake in the parking lot out front before your tune......?
