The theory and fix *should* have been tested in race one, however as Duncan pulled onto the track the boost went goodbye. As the blokes were tightening things up after the inspection of the thermostat, it seems some coolant/crap caused some slippage in the bay and a pipe didn't get as much love as needed. Yup, we'd blown an intercooler pipe.

After some afterhours tinkering (and more skin and blood being sacrificed to the car) we *think* it's sorted... touch wood.

:( After tinkering with Duncans car today. No one better tell me Z32's are hard to work on anymore. I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION ALL 1990'S NISSANS ARE MADE EQUALLY DIFFICULT. :) .

What a dumb place to put a thermostat. Dont worry Neil. I am sure our burns will heal fast.

I am sure it wont take long for the local IGA to replenish stock of distilled water after the run on stock they had today wiped it out. :)

not cursed, just running hot. actually the race that I did get to start was a ball. all the other drivers were very sensible and courteous although a few of them were clearly very green on the race track.

and yes hislop's tyres were totally rooted by the end. that car is outrageously quick.

PI was good fun but I need more than 10 hot laps to get the hang of it.

and...interesting interpretation of the targa regs in some of those cars....really should have just been called sports sedans up the front of the grid.

quick? it was outrageous. 1.45.1 which according to the circuit times thread is almost a second quicker than Aaronr34's time which is the quickest on here.

This was the first lap of race 3. I got a good start but fried the clutch (not that I noticed until 3rd gear). Even so I was up from 24 to 14th before I gave up on the clutch and let the guys through...then limped around the rest of the race without the clutch (more practice needed, I can do it fine when I don't need to but I struggled this race)

BTW evos suck at getting off the line

You do know the cars are not based of Targa rules? The Targa classes are free for all, but the lap time dictates your class. The front runners cars are insane, Lawson's 200sxr is tuff.....but unreliable as buggery, he grenaded so many engines down here.

your poor clutch, you held it there for a while. Our clutch in the R33 can't handle more than 2-3 secs being revved...probably needs adjusting

hahah I do know now! But no I didn't realise until I started looking at the cars beside me in the garages lol.

Lawson's car is also amazing, standard capacity sr20, 1.46 around there. And the poor bastards changed a head overnight, then broke a diff about 2 laps later. I thought I was having top speed challenges but they were over 7500 in 5th with a 4.1 diff, I was only about 6000.

You thought it was running hot last weekend - just wait til this weekend by the looks of it! LOL

But that was your first real time there is a fast car doing fast times right Dunc? It's a different place once corners like 3 and Hayshed are no-longer an easy flat one hey! What was your best time in the end?

Oh - FYI Aaron has done 1.44's around there now. A few others have gone quicker still but not ones that could pass under propper Targa regs (Aaron could get his to pass pretty much ok though). But what were the tyre regs for the class? Was everyone on R Comps or on Slicks?

yeah everyone was on semis, although some cars got new ones for each of the 3 races. as usual budget talks. I was on dunlop dz03 for the first time too, and they are excellent, at least as good as re55s. I don't think top line current semis give away anything significant to same sized slicks.

one thing I saw once again....modern full weight cars put too much strain on semis and they simply fail. I saw stuffed dunlops, bridgestone, toyo and kumho tyres this weekend, none of them are up to the job of carrying heavy cars safely

I can't really call my car quick, turn 3 and the right hander into the hayshed were still both flat (although in 5th this time). I found the next turn left after hayshed and lukey heights very tricky but the rest pretty straight forward.

Best time was 1.53 and best potential lap based on 3x best sectors was 1.51. No doubt I was a couple of seconds off what the car was capable of, I really need time to learn tracks and lots of laps to go fast. Not like Pete who can set his fastest lap on the first lap, then gets slower every lap after  I only had about 10 clean laps so hopefully will do a fair bit better next weekend. My guess is the car is good for a 1.49-1.48, about the same as eastern creek.

But I've never met a race track I don't like, PI is no exception. It definately has challenges, in particular judging the speed in the quick corners. I am sure I could carry 10 or maybe even 20 klm/h faster in turn 1 and 12 but I just didn't get the time to get the comfort with them, and if you run wide on the exit of either you are in the shit.

Les walkden wrote off his spec c wrx on the straight and went to hospital with a sore neck, so you can't under-estimate how much it will hurt if you mis-judge it.

snowcone did you work out your cooling problems? did the pwr setup help? or did the right one never arrive? I know mark's r34 runs the best water cooling he can get but still runs too hot too

Dunc - yeah I got it in the end and am running the same system as Mark (PWR Cross Flow).

The temps are MUCH improved. At Targa Tas for example the hottest I got the car was at the end of the Sideling and that was 81degs. No other stage got to 80 even. That's compared to 117degs I hit in half a stage at Wrest Point (before the wheel thankfully fell off and stopped me from destroying an engine! LOL)

That being said last Friday at Winton it was 37degs ambient and after 5 hot laps there the water was up to 95 and still climbing (so I went in after that) - but the car used to hit over 100degs there after 2 hot laps on a cold day. But that was the first time driving it in anger I'd had it above 85degs since putting the new radiator in. I totally rate it as a good thing.

Actually as a funny story on Saturday in the heat at DECA with all of the short bursts we do there and idling the water temps before my run on the short track were up to 94degs - but then at the end of my 60s run on the track they down to 84degs! LOL

But if you are keen on one of these things you need to make SURE you speak to the right person at PWR (Adam) and tripple re-iterate what you want! And even then chances are you'll need to modify it to get it to fit. LOL

Oh - and I'm sure they will tell you that you need one of their thermo's to run one. You don't. I still run the stock fan minus the shroud no problems.

:/

IMO, if you did run the PWR thermo fan, you will find it even better Snowy. The give away is the DECA statement, proved that even a little more airflow, regardless of the engine working harder, massively reduced the temp. FYI, I run just one tiny little thermo fan with a PWR radiator.

Mine isn't a crossflow version, not do I run the oil cooler, but my engine is also a lowly RB20 and doesn't make the grunt that you guys do.

I have a hobs switch set at 91 degrees, and I'm alway astounded with how little time the fan spends running. It typically only cycles for five to ten seconds then is back at 85 or so. I have it set at 91 because I never wanted the fan to cycle in while the car is moving.

Timmy will attest to getting to the end of a stage and asking if it got, my reply was invariably "well it's nearly up to temp".

I only recall the fan coming on a few times when it had been stationary in a line up before a stage. Oil cooler yeh/no?

Good work Dunc. Interested about the semis failing....whats cars were they on and how did they fail? I have a fairly stock (no weight saving, 270-280atw) R33 GTR and never had issues with the semis. Also my pb at PI is 1:49 and I think a low 49...maybe...48 is possible if the wind is blowing the right way :( So I have no doubt your car is capable of achieving the same.

    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
    • 100% accurate!  We are a pack of know it alls....  But, I bet people go to you when they have a problem! I've been on a bit of a clean up rampage too over the past month!  I've thrown more shit in the bin over the past 2 weeks than I have in the past 3 years combined! Anyway, it's all good fun being different! My wife sometimes does not agree!
    • ADHD in all form isn't about "can focus, or can't focus" or is hyper active or isn't etc.   It's all a dysregulation. Either time feels to be stationary, or time just vanishes in a split second. We are either under focussed on the task at hand (as we're over focussed on our surroundings) or we have no idea an atomic bomb went off beside us as we're so hyper focussed and locked in on things.   Not to mention the rapid fire thought process. What it takes a "normal" process to think up a solution to a problem, ADHD will be able to give you 5 different ways to solve the problem, and the pros and cons of each. While we can be highly impulsive and lack the ability to "control ourselves" we can also become paralysed with the inability to make a decision for ourselves. While most of us have an OCD like requirement for perfection, we lack the ability often to remain focussed to get things to a perfect state. Those with undiagnosed ADHD as adults, can often find the last part actually stops them ever attempting to do things that they have the ability to do, as the reasoning is often "if I can't do it perfectly, it's not worth doing"   As for projects... Ha ha ha, I still need to take the other half of my wall trim down in the Fiance's office so I can paint it. Need to finish digging and running the back yard drains, my R33, getting the Ninja bike registered (now being sold), the moped project, fixing either of the lawn mowers so they're reliable, along with a myriad of other things.   It's why I've been going through lately and just being brutal and clearing projects off that I won't actually ever complete. IE, moped will go to the tip, or be given away, bike is being sold, Subaru project being sold, some parts for other projects given away. Or I've been making myself focus on one thing at a time, by ticking off the smallest quickest ones first.   There's also a reason by our mid twenties we seem to be "know it alls", as we've all been down some of the weirdest and oddest rabbit holes when you follow the dopamine trail. It's often also why we're more a jack of all trades, but not a master of one.   However, pretty much all of my hobby projects, in one way or another, all come back around to automotive. That's my zen area.
