Yeah mate, the 787B was and is a thing of awe...... but it's not quite a road car.

I've driven plenty of rotors, from R100's through to Series 8's, and although novel, they don't grab me. I've never driven one that was a "complete package" if you know what I mean. I so desperately wanted to fall in love with a series 6 through 8, but they failed me :(

I don't actually hate them though, but "rotor folks" are always so easy to stir up.

Now excuse me while I go purge.

you sure you're not from sydney's western suburbs? lol. you sure you don't like gold chains? seriously though. nice one. I like the old RX3s. another good way to die in a loud car without taking too many down with you!

I could well be mate, I was born in Sunshine... and I have been known to wear a gold chain...

It was a very cool little car. I only owned it for a few months as someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse, but I do regret selling it. Would have been my only car that appreciated in value!

Is this a joke? Like posting up a link to a video about rotors and the link being fail saying somethign about rotors themselves?? :)

Yeah..... +1

This is about as exciting as rotors get.

I am suffering the same thing..

i am really trying to get excited about building an early rotor to run in classic but am finding it hard to get really excited about it. Probabaly should have just kept the evo :(

Ah, now I can see it....R34 GTR at Wrest Point, FD RX7 in motorkhana.... same same. :)

Try this (for Snowys video)

Good to see the guy at the end wearing flame retardant shoes with shorts and a tshirt!!

You boys want 4rotor action?

Fast forward to 2:12 for some great driving. Motor is a 4rotor PP and was built in NZ by a mate of mine at PPRE.

And here's a pretty recent vid of the mazda 787B LeMans car driven by Johnny Herbert who got the chequered flag in 1991 but never got to stand on the podium as he was taken directly to hospital for heat exhaustion.

I get a boner every time I hear that R26B quad... :3some:

Don't let me turn you off, but do keep your eyes open mate.

The big issue I have with building a competitive Classic is the huge amount of custom work required by professionals. I've seen it a lot, a bloke spends a fortune building a fantastic old car with heaps of good mods etc, only for it to be damaged to a point of questionable repair.

It happened to a mate of mine at Adelaide a couple of years ago. Spent well over $100k on an early RX7, custom 5 link, awesome cage, Hollinger box, hundreds of lovely custom things, only to throw if down a bank hard and wrote it off.

He sold all the bits be could and walked away. Very sad.

Thats one reason I choose to race a relatively easily replaced car, just find another and cage it up....... That's just my point of view though.

That's exactly why I sold my RX3 and bought a 32R. Last time I was at E/Creek I saw a guy nail the inside wall on the exit of 8 and destroy the front of his car and put himself in hospital. That was the turning point for me. Time to sell up and stop pussying around in a classic car, buy something 'smashable' and give it ten tenths!

On the flipside, I know why people want to build a certain car too. My RX3 was a dream since Yr9 at school, it was worth a very nice house deposit, took me 7yrs to build and sold it after 13yrs of ownership :(

The GTR is merely a tool to go fast in. Nothing more :P

I suffered the same excitement a few years ago and we through together an RX3 coupe from a caged shell in about 3 weeks and ran Rally Tasmania 09. We had all sorts of problems due to the lack of prep, but when it went it was very fast and very competitive. I still have 3 shells and will one day make one properly, but as Benny said there is a lot of engineering to be done to get them right! We were going full 5 link rear and rack & pinion steering front etc etc.

You would probably spend $30-$50k, but you would be up there with the Porsches at a fraction of the price? 880kg and 250hp should work well?

Look at

about 3:20 in

and

about 5:04 in

Car was VERY loud and we were told not to come back unless it was quieter...

Hey Benny, if you are talking about Richards car than yes it was a work of art. Many of the parts ended up in my RX3. Was a sad day helping him strip the shell. I think he was running about 3rd at classic adelaide when it all went wrong?

Photo attached of my RX3 to try and spark Darksides interest..

Thanks Woo, Paul and Mark.

Woo you make an excellent point about the extreme custom stuff. I hadn't quite considered replacing it or parts of it, especially if it was a super custom jobbie. You do kind of want off the shelf parts if possible or a good local jap importer/wrecker for your bits. The Evo was great like that. The parts for the older chassis were harder to find not impossible once you knew where to look.

Am thinking now my mega custom gen 1 RX7 group C replica is a nice dream but a bad idea.

Paul, a 13B powered 10a front red RX3 coupe was my first fast car. Probably do me good to drive one again to remind myself how agricultural a leaf sprung rear end with a steering box tiller was to drive :) heaps of fun though.

Thanks again for the input fellas. Have to keep sleeping on it.

Yeah Paul, spot on mate. It was gorgeous, such a shame.

Another fellow has been calling me about his build of his much loved 240Z, a car he's owned and loved forever, and has always wanted to "do Targa". He's begun the build, and the only reason I'm not telling him that maybe he shouldn't be risking a car that he has such a huge attachment to, is because he Promises he's going just to finish, not to be fast s such.

Heya 2PEE :)

You know of my previous exploits... I am a CAD/CAM/CNC programmer from waaay back  I'm now in management and off the floor, but still have a play on the machines when I want something fancy!

If you think this guy would be up for a chat some time, could you PM me his number? I'm always up for a nerd to nerd car chat, especially if he has an engineering background!

As for the 'spare' RB26, I'm looking for something built for a trackable/reliable 350kw.

BTW, how do you know shit about me?!?! Damn car scene...

Mark :)

You know what they say about info on the internet, you should remove those sexting pics by the way, shudder!

I'll send the number and on second thoughts he's usually not too effusive on the phone, so a visit might gain a bit more.....you might even be able to convince him to get away from going line by line at the machine with your background.

    • Well, no. It's an 023, which is pretty similar to an 040. Although it is hard to tell from the specs, as given.
    • Hmm. Maybe the (other thing I forgot about!) Haltech removes at least some, if not all, of the problem I described. I guess there is still the possibility of getting it wrong if the AC is set up/wired up for the Haltech as if it was in an R34 (simply because it's on a Neo), and that's playing foul with the R32 AC computer.
    • Glad it eventually came out Duncan!   I believe that might be 040. 044 is the inline pump, so has screw fittings in and out. 040 is more just drop it in fuel and the bottom is "open" (mesh) from my memory
    • well mate, while I hear your pain, turns out I don't feel it this time! Must have been a bastard of a job crammed into the boot The tank was very empty (probably pumped out, not dropped and drained because there were some fumes still) and in very good condition internally. I'm sure he never ran e85 in it I don't know what the hell Nissan's fuel tank engineers were thinking about their clipping system, this hanger was really hard to get moving but came out in the end All looks very good (as I'm starting to hopefully expect) and Matty was right it is an 023 (044) bosch which should be plenty for the injectors and turbo
