Ended the event with the front brake pads worn half way through the backing plate and a car that was overheating and down on power.

Great to see you got your moneys worth out of those pads mate.

Remind me never ever to be on the same strip of tarmac as you.

Cheers

Neil.

< 300km old Ferodo DS3000 pads, got over 700kms of competitive out of the last set... Even checked them at service after day one and they were no where near the metal by then. Brakes were working fine and didn't make any noise until after the last Buller stage. Won't be using those next year that's for sure!

I can vouch for piss bins style(baszil_1) i have a photo of him making love to a large thomas the tank engine from behind... adjacent to the goulburn workers club

he fell over a fence lost his i pod then made love to a bucket... funniest shit ever

he went to sleep fully clothed and woke up naked

will race with and drink with again A++++ form!

Happy new year evrryone. Hope its off to a good start with lots of petrol related plans. :)

Used to be a ferodo guy, but have switched to Pagid and been very impressed with performance and low pad/rotor qear. RS19/29 is a good tarmac rally choice IMHO.

And congrats on the shell Paul. First thing I thought when I saw the pic was what an ideal starting colour for a Z tune replica build. :) Should be epic.

Glad to see you're rebuilding so soon Paul. Was great to meet you at THC and i'm sure i'll see you out at future events.

Likewise mate great meeting you guys and see you out there soon. All the best for Wrest Point.

Bwahahha top work Liam - right up my alley.

Can also vouch for the Pagids - worked very well with no fuss. Bit more expensive than the Ferodo's but well worth it from all accounts.

Shell will be off for a cage in the next week or two. Just finished stripping all wiring, tar etc and finishing cleaning up. Z-tune kit is en route :)

The pagids worked real well for you champ......

Advise should really be given by people with experience....

Nah you know what.

1) I had been using the same set of Pagids since July doing two, sometimes three track days a month

2) I changed the front pads right before THC, they are were at about 30% so keeping them as spares, rotors didn't need machining

3) Pretty sure that same set did TT 2011 to a 2nd EM - previous owner could confirm, he had them on there for a reason, Blaise (1st EM) is also recommending the Pagids a few posts above - go figure

4) I have only used DS2500's on a street car, so yes you are right I don't have much experience with them, in their limited use pad wear was considerable, going from other people I have spoken it varies, some find they wear fast, others don't, and the 3000's are hard on rotors and probably not best suited to TR

5) My crash was in no way brake related, it was driver error - rubbing salt into someones wound - class act mate look forward to racing with you

The pads are only one part of the equation for longevity, but they seem to play the part well from my experience.

Is that enough Poole? Pleasure to meet you. Not sure why you feel the need to belittle someone you don't even know? How about you try adding something to the discussion - maybe you will teach me something with all your infinite wisdom. Good day.

I used Pagid once, but moved to Hawke. We've always ran HT10's in the R33, and I've been running them in the gtst. I found the Pagids started to disintergrate when they got low on pad material.

It's funny, I use the DS3000 (fr) and DS2500 (rr) on my little 32 GTS-t, and they've been VERY kind to rotors (one set still AOK after 3 years) and very ecenomical. . . . . I rotate two sets and am not even half way through each.

Maybe my low powered R32 just doesn't work them hard? Or maybe I need to brake more? :P

Thanks guys, i'll keep them in mind for our next set. Ended up going with some Performance Friction carbon metalic pads which weren't cheap and are apparently pretty harsh on the rotors. Hopefully we can get at least 500kms out of them though!

In other news the car just got back from getting a bigger pump/injectors/rail and a 3.5" exhaust (3" - 3.5" - 3" before) and is now around 330kw atw. Turns out the car did have a pretty significant boost leak so it wasn't just me thinking the car was getting slower towards the end of THC.

TWP is just around the corner now and hopefully everything goes to plan :D

Depending on what compound you're running, actually found them pretty good for rotor wear - old 80 series and the last few years stuff, might be a different story perhaps. Ebay bookmark on PFC can come in handy too for excess stock, picked up V8SC 01s that normally go for 1k per axle set here for only a few hundred for 2 sets.

Nah,

I'd say its cause you are using them well. Only time I found them hard on rotors is when they weren't up to temp. :)

My only issue with them was I found the initial bite great in the dry, but found it could be a bit aggressive in the wet and really upset the ABS and make bad things happen. :) I guess I could have just manned up and got rid of the ABS. Wont be a problem for me in the future. :)

Yeah you are right they are cracking up a bit around the edges and a few chunks out of the middle of the pad. How far did you push yours before changing them?

Or maybe I need to brake more? :P

Reckon that might be it lol.

This makes sense. The 3000's peak between 500 - 600 deg but still have as much friction as the 2500's at 300, the 2500's taper off after 300. I guess a lot of the reports of high pad / rotor wear could just be to do with pad overkill with the 3000's and not getting them up to temp, or not having adequate cooling with the 2500's.

Have any of you guys measured your brake temps after stages?

I've not measured temps, but my rotors have the heat paint and they're peak has been spot on in the middle of the orange area. I warm my brakes prior to stages if we're not expecting a big delay. The heat produced also warms the front tyres and brings them up to pressure.

Blaise, your wet findings are not something I've noted for myself, but I'm keen to take particualr notice next time I run the car in the wet, if I ever get the bloody thing going again! haha

Over the last 4-5 years we have used all different brands of pads on our tarmac and gravel cars. The pagids have been a great gravel pad (RS4-blue) and used them on the tarmac Escort too. Great feel and wear, but not ultimate stopping power.

Endless didn't work for us, Hawk didn't either.

Have been through the Ferodo DS range too on the Skylines and WRX's. Good pads but always a problem somewhere in the heat range- no grip when cold, brake shake & inconsistency when hot..

Switched to Project U' before Targe HC 2010 and have never looked back. Amazing performance hot or cold, great pad wear and minimal disc wear. The front AP rotors are now at just under 3000kms competitive and are due for replacement. We use the top "street" pad ( HC or HC+?) and they are simply brilliant. Have them in the dirt Subaru too and the characteristics are the same. We will keep using these for now, although apparently Project U' now have a "clubman" range..haven't tried these yet?

The trick with pads for Targa is somerthing that will work stone cold, or at 700+ degrees, and not eat your rotors. Targa 2009 Melinda had great brakes on the WRX but wore out $1500 worth of rotors in 100kms competitive...

Cheers

paul

Interesting looking at the Pagid Yellow RS29's - they maintain pretty consistent friction between 200 - 550 where they peak, but not as much as the 3000's at the same temp. Bit more of a no brainer pad I guess - suits me! Where the 3000's - if you are warming them up properly will give better friction at peak.

I'll agree the Ferodo's can give off some shake when really punished. I've managed to skim the same rotors 3 times VERY lightly. They're not warped, they had some of what could only be described as pad buildup on them. I've not had to change the rotors and they're still of "legal" width.

I've heard so many good things about Project MU's though, that I'm keen to give them a try next time.

Thanks guys, i'll keep them in mind for our next set. Ended up going with some Performance Friction carbon metalic

What compound? I have driven a car with what I was told were PFC01s and I loved them. Really, really nice. I grabbed some PFC06 which are meant to be the Endurance spec PFC01 with a little less bite but far kinder on rotors and I simply found them WAAAAY too bitey and was forever locking brakes :( Was a tad gutted

    • It really depends on your setup. Mine is 'accidently' more suited to revving higher. bigger cams, turbo etc. Plus my super long first takes donkey years to come onto boost, so if it will move my power band to the right, maybe i'll pass on this. i have a G45-1500 going on there soon which I suspect might make it more of a fat pig.
    • Yeah good call, I will endeavour to tuck that down when I rewrap the looms it’s pushed up by
    • Good work. I will say, this line circled however, will potentially pool with oil, as it's going from high, to low, to high, before heading downwards.
    • Yeah, thumbsup from me. The distant shot of the bay just looks same-same as before.
    • Dad had a court case drag out with them from 1998 to 2004. He was in a not at fault accident, NRMA were the ones who covered the other person. They tried to blame his neck injuries on the fact he'd had an injury in 1981 on his extreme lower back where he slipped a single disc right near the bottom. Had been all cleared from that injury for years. This accident destroyed his shoulder, and f**ked a heap of discs in his neck, and he still has major problems with it to this day. Sarah's sister while on her L plates had a small Suzuki Alto, she had stopped to give way to an ambulance, and someone changed lanes behind her because there lane was also slowing, and rear ended her at 80km/h. (She had been stopped for a few seconds already too!). Car was completely f**kED. NRMA sent the vehicle around to 3 different workshops as they kept claiming "We believe it can be repaired, and not written off, we just need to find the correct workshop". It took 3 months, and a lot of arguing before they'd concede and wrote it and paid out. About two years later her sister had a Lancer, someone pulled out of a stop sign without stopping (in an 80 zone). Her sister swerved, hit the front of the other persons car (Instead of dead t-boning the drivers door), which ramped her Lancer, and made it roll multiple times down the road. It hit every panel on the way through. Her sister had slid her self out of the car, and remembers the ambos walking to the accident (They'd been sitting at a set of lights just down the road and witnessed it) and they were saying "Well, this ones going to be a fatality, no way you can walk away from that". Well, she did. And then NRMA sent two assessors out to look at the car, both of which wrote it off. They tried to send another assessor out, except a HUGE uproar was raised, and they FINALLY paid it out. That was on a car, that had damage to EVERY panel, you could see from 100m away the whole car was also twisted, roof bowed etc. Nah, we'll try get out of needing to payout on a $10,000 car... Her sister ended up with major shoulder reconstructive surgery being required, and was permanently limited in her ability to do her job as a nurse after that, as she can't (And was told before surgery too this would be guaranteed to happen) regain full strength in that shoulder. However, there was no choice to not have it, as she could barely use her arm, which was her dominant one, and was in near constant major pain. (And she's the type of person that would try and walk off a broken leg!) NRMA did the biggest run around on the personal injury side too for about 18 months, even to the point of trying to put 100% blame of the accident on Sarah's sister, even though the other driver admitted she didn't look, and didn't stop, and was charged by the police. Sarah used to have a Barina insured with them. It was a policy setup, paid all 12 months in advance. At the end of the 12 months, Sarah was living with me, I reviewed the renewal, it clearly stated "If you do nothing, your policy will cease on XYZ date". We did nothing, as we moved her insurance in with all of mine and I was with Shannons. We find out 10 months later, NRMA decided, because he DAD had a car insurance policy at the same address as what Sarah's mailing address was (Garaged address had been changed), that they'd put Sarah's (What should have been non existent policy) onto her Dad's month to month charges on his credit card. We had to jump through hoops, to get a refund. They didn't care that we actually found the letter that said "If you do nothing, your policy will cease" they made us prove we had NON COMPULSORY insurance else where before they'd issue the refund, and after they agreed to the refund, it still took another 6 weeks and 3 more phone calls for them to actually process it. They also had two insurance claims from storm damage, and they were an absolute cluster to get resolved as well (one vehicle, one house). Some how, up until about 3 years ago, her parents were still loyal to NRMA too, and we were like "How the hell are you so loyal to staying with them, when other places are so much cheaper, and they've f**ked you over every time you've ever had to make a claim?"
