Hi, I am considering crossing the ditch next year and doing a round or two of Targa (I can probably only afford 2 day events) so looking for some advice...

I suspect it is impractical to bring my car over - so I would be looking to hire, does anyone have any suggestions on places to approach to hire cars? I have seen http://www.targaracing.com.au/ but am not sure if an MX5 or 130 would suit me. I have previously rallied turbo 4WDs, but am quite keen to try a turbo RWD if possible. I am not particularly fussy on car brand/model/age - I am mainly interested in a new challenge.

Also, I have looked on youtube a little, but want to get an idea from competitors what the roads are like? I am particularly keen on tight, challenging roads - I am used to 200km speed limits here in NZ at Targa. Targa High Country so far looks quite appealing to me, but I can't really guage a huge amount from what I see on youtube...

From the people I've spoken too, the general consensus is that High Country is the best of the 2 day events. Dad has done Wrest Point and High Country, and he said he wouldn't bother with Wrest Point again, the roads are pretty average.

The roads are like goat tracks, and in bad repair. There is a couple of good stages, but all the High Country stages are in good condition, and enjoyable to drive. I've been on a lot of the Wrest Point stages back when they were last run in Targa 07, and I wasn't a fan.

You might have to look at privately leasing a car, as I think most of the lease cars are NA cars.

Targa High Country is amazing. I'd highly recommend it!

Leasing a car is expensive, maybe more so than bringing your own car.

Les Walken Rallying ( speak to Bodge) can lease you a Spec C if that's more your speed.

I'd venture to say that a bunch of FT86's will become available soon enough from someone too :)

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I am enquiring now about shipping costs. Any idea how easy it is to get a rally car on the road for High Country? I have a WRX I could use, but would prefer to use the GTR - however it doesn't have NZ numberplates, so I suspect that may not be an easy task? I will look over the regs now as far as modifications go and see if it will fit into any of the categories.

Targa High Country and Targa Wrest Point offer two very difference experiences indeed.

Targa High Country is simply stunning, particular from an elevation change point of view as you explore some of most physically demanding tarmac rally stages in the country, but to stay Targa Wrest Point roads are like goat tracks is hardly reflective of the entire course. Sure sections of Pelverata, Cygnet and Longley have plenty of lumps and surface changes, but any car with decent setup will take these sections in stride and be rewarded by commitment on what are some of my most favorite pieces of road…. and of course let’s not forget Tahune, Oyster Cove and Dover and which are sensationally smooth stages for all the ladies :P

Seriously, Wrest Point roads, goat tracks?! No way. I don't know why you're always recycling that line, but I strongly disagree. Even when some of those roads were used as part of big Targa, I loved them. Sure, some are a bit gnarly is spots, and sometimes council resurfaced them at questionable times, but they were, and are, awesome roads. Remeber, we're rallying here champ, not circuit racing. Maybe soften the shitter up a bit to suit that day's competition?

You Tassie blokes are spoilt, or soft, I'm not sure which one :)

Let's get a tarmac rally going in Queensland, we'll show you farkin goat tracks! You better stay under the sheets though Benny, you'll get scared.

Just In case anyone here may be interested I want to sell this could be a good tarmac rally car…

Suit race - rally or time attack cannot be road registered.

Car starts & drives, has never been crashed or repaired, still has all original paint. Test drives can be arranged on a trade plate if required.

Minor scratch on front bar and mould, was going to build the car into a time attack car but have too many projects at the moment so this one has to go.

Latest update from the last Targa West Track day held down at the Motorplex...

We had a great day up until the last run....it poured down big time during the last run...160klm-aqua plane- down the bank backwards and into the concrete wall.

The cage kept us safe(only a couple of broken ribs for me) and the cage clearly did its job, but the car is now a basket case..needs a front and rear cut as well as a new cage so its start from scratch with a new shell/cage etc and transfer the running gear.

We will be out of action for around 12 months but will be back with a new R32 GTR..

ouch, she doesn't look too healthy, great to hear that you and your nav are OK.

Out of interest...did something in the car come loose and hit your ribs, or did that injury happen in the seat? I think its important to keep in mind the huge loads in a crash when you are doing the interior of a car.
