Well we have had some rather bad luck down here and didn't make it back to the silverdome this arvo. Here's my short TT experience..

Yesterday morning felt ok, easing into it so that we made it through to the end at Hobart. Halfway through the Paloona stage after lunch we lost all boost so idled through the next few stages. After a quick roadside bonnet check we assumed it was either one of the intercooler pipes or the cooler itself. We drove the rest of the afternoon without boost (and blowing a lot of fuel out the back) and lost just about any chance we had at finishing the race above half way.

Lucky for us the owner of one of the Launceston performance shops owned a 33gtr which he was willing to sacrifice for us. We ended day 1 with the car back together and working and hope for a faster day 2. Once we are back at our cabin and about to get some dinner I get a call from one of the octagon officials at the silverdome and apparently we were needed back there. We get there to be escorted over to scrutineering for an engine stroke test. We were a bit surprised but ok sure, they had the tools to do the work. I think at that time they realised we were running in the bottom 5 in the category and were no where near contention so decided not to go ahead with it. They did pick our bonnet up though as it was not identical to the nismo one which I'm going to have to source and get approved before the next event.

After some showers overnight we woke to wet roads on day two and an overcast/scattered shower looking sky. Being our first wet targa experience it took a while to get comfortable with roads. After lunch we were back feeling confident and managed to pass an EM RX7 in one stage and a M 911 the next.

After an uneventful run through the Legerwood stage we started driving towards the Sidling, pulled onto the main road towards it, started overtaking a truck who had pulled aside for is when bang. Engine lost all power and there was a trail of smoke behind us. We pulled over and checked the engine bay with nothing looking out of place. Car wouldnt hold idle and or rev past 2000rpm. So I hitched to meet the service crew and we towed the car back to Launceston, getting to drive the Sidling with a car trailer at night in some rather thick fog.

As disheartening as it is, an engine is easier to replace then a body shell so we are luckier then some. Going to do it d before the next event and either find a new block or rebuild this one if its not too bad.

Anyway enough of that. I hope everyone left in the race has better luck then what we have had. Savman's looking promising for a podium finish, all the best!

5km from the end of arrowsmith (59km stage) I dropped to 5 cylinders, looks like I've done a valve. I was sitting in 2nd at the time, and would have been extending my gap. We did the last 3 stages on 5 cylinders. Pretty sad at the moment, but a few beers will fix that.

    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
    • I’d love to find some where that can recover the dashes to look brand new and original. Mine has a very slight bubble, nothing compared to some I’ve seen though
