Oh dear...

Not kidding... I bash the hell out of a RB26 making 700rwhp on a stock bottom end and it takes everything I can throw at it.

Make 300awhp in an 4G63 and it throws 2 legs out of bed at 3600rpm in 4th gear on a warm up lap :(

There's obviously more to it than that lol, you don't punch a hole in the block at that power and rpm if everything has been done properly.

I'm no Evo over but by most accounts the 4G is a good bit of gear.

My post should have said Evo "lover" not over woops.

Yeah anyway, just saying. That sort of failure is probably less to do the strength of the factory bottom end and more to do with something like a failed oil pump or something like that (if the engine has not been previously abused).

Yeah sure we all know you love to "over" Evo's Dan. But yes our little 4G63 at stock specs as it left Mitsa keeps trucking along, daily driver, track days, motorkhana's, recce car. Not my cup of tea but can't complain with that sort of reliability.

Formidable early modern car for high country, particularly shines on day two through the tight and twisty stages around lake eildon.

Apparently EVO VIIs are known for their weak rods so if you do a bit of searching it's not the only one that has let go at low rpm under load

So the real issue is pushing beyond the limits then?

I knew CAs were prone to do head gaskets around the 200kw mark, so was not susprised when exactly that happened.

At least you know where the weak spot is so you can fix it right :)

Not having a go or anything, just dont pointing out that it can be a bit rough to say something is weak if you know what the limits are and you've pushed up to or beyond it.

Everything has limits of course.

I hope it's a relatively quick and as cheap a fix as it can be! Not a fun job.

To be honest it was a surprise to us, we didn't know they were that weak. Only found out after doing research after :( That motor is in the bin and new one is already in the hole and running so all is well.

Yeah E85 but backing it right back to 1bar now because we don't want to head across the country just to lunch another motor... How about you?

Still on 98, little bit behind the times! Had some teething issues getting the car reliable due to some silly things like one of the turbos lunching bearings every few hundred kms, wiring faults, faulty radiator caps - the list goes on. Just need to get out and enjoy the car & event, then look at speeding things up for Tassie.

See you all on the Friday afternoon at Mansfield! Really looking forward to this one. Have spent quite some time setting up the suspension since tt so am looking forward to testing the car out on roads I (should) know fairly well by now.

Correct, the rods look like some of the pipe cleaner dolls they used to make on playschool.

Not again... it was freakishly cold last year.

If you have support crew with diesel vehicles without a fuel heater, make sure you get alpine mix. Heap of crews got caught out last year with frozen diesel unable to start them up and get off the mountain before the road closed.

The field in High Country seems to have grown again. Will be interesting to see if they can extend the event in future years.

Day one was the first time it had rained on THC and seemed to test out a few teams. The coarse tarmac on most roads seemed to hold quite a bit of grip even after the rain hit. Mount Buller tested out most cars on Saturday with what seemed like 4 seasons in one stage. The first 2/3 of the hill was fast in the dry however was crazily slippery once in the rain through the middle and the snow/sleet up top.

Our new Haltech tripped a fuel pressure warning twice sending the car into limp mode after the second right hand hairpin meaning I had to hit the battery isolation whilst on a straight and restart the car to finish the stage. When it started again the car was still rolling forward which killed 4wd, A-LSD and ABS until I came to a complete stop, something I forgot until after the stage!

The rain eased up overnight though the cold weather stayed around at the top of the mountain. Our oil was down to 0°c while the water was at 4°c even after 2 hours in the sun before we cranked the engine over. Quite a few service cars were stuck at the top of the mountain especially the diesels, not helped by the fact the local servos stopped supplying alpine mix a few weeks before the event. The dry roads on day two were dry which gave us more confidence to push a little faster.

Second run up Buller was a lot cleaner with a 10:20, 26 seconds faster than the year before. Video of the run through the link for anyone who wants to watch;

Now time for a retune then some new wheels before next year. Short list for wheels is down to; Volk RE30 or CE28, Weds or (the affordable option) RPF01. Any recommendations?

    • Also, the cause of fuel spills and smells from the top of the tank is almost always the rubber hoses that are up there, not the tank seal.
    • 1. No, as you say you can remove the connectors and fuel lines. Before you do make sure you remove fuel pump fuse and crank the starter a few times to release pressure, and also loosen the fuel cap (just in case the tank is slightly pressurised) as it will pump out the lines otherwise 2. Not necessary but you are right, if it is the factory pump it is at risk of failing after 25 years....Changing it is not hard but potentially not trivial as you have to make sure you have the right pickup/sock for the pump to suit the tank, need to make wiring connections (crimped butt connectors would be fine) and have to mount/adapt the new pump in the right place in the cradle. Not impossible but don't start the job if you aren't confident. Also, the plastic nut that holds that seal in place can be really hard to remove. If you don't have a fuel nut removal tool it generally requires a big screwdriver or similar to bash the ring around a few times before you can get it by hand. Also the fuel lines can be very sticky on the tank lid fittings, hose removal pliers can help or if not twist the hose on the fitting (eg with linesperson's pliers) to break the seal before you try and remove it. Finally, mark the feed and return hoses so you don't put them on backwards and seal them with an m8 bolt to stop crap getting into the lines while working. Add a little grease in the threads of the plastic lid when you go to do it back up as a gift to your future self, and make sure you put it on evenly/not cross threaded.  Having said all that, most likely the lid just needs to be either tightened or removed and put back on without being cross threaded...the seal itself is usually pretty good.
    • Another weekend and another project I have questions about.... I bought a fuel tank sender O ring to install on the car because I'm quite sus on what I've got now.  1. No "whooosh" sound when opening fuel cap 2. If I fill up full tank, there will be a small leak under the car and it comes from the top of the fuel tank, dripping along the side. Stops after a short while 3. Hot days = 50/50 chance to get high as a kite inside the cabin if the car was in the sun for too long This is what I bought: https://www.amayama.com/en/part/nissan/1734279900 My plan was to just replace the O ring but I've got some questions: 1. Does the whole fuel pump assembly need to come out for me to replace the O ring?         Or, could I unplug all the connectors and fuel lines at the top, take off the twisty part (17343) and put in the O ring from the top?  2. Is it a very common thing for everyone to just change the pump whenever doing this?        I see the Walbro 255 gets thrown in a lot but I've got no issues with my pump so far. When I did the tune, I asked the guy to check my fuel pressure and he said there were no issues too. But is it just a good idea to change to the 255 anyway as the old unit may have been in there for so long? The 255 seems to be a direct fit for GTT (I got no soldering iron)  
    • Normal speedtek issues, bin it and go cdoo# or 8hp. So many issues with these gearsets, a mate went through 3 rebuilds and multiple parts with heat, bearing and vibration issues.  
    • I wouldn't go near them, they are rubber seals for a reason. Just chuck new cam cover seals, half moons and the spacers for the screws every decade or two. I add a really thin layer of silicone too and it seems to hold together OK
