well what a huge weekend, congratulations to many, but condolences to most here!

although some talk of goat tracks of leg two and how rough they were, i spent much of today with naomi tillet from the vip petfoods gtr team who said that they found the stages glenlusk and peleverata some of the most enjoyable of the event from a genuine challenge point of view and interestingly they set the fastest times over these stages in the 1750kg barge!

as a side note, how good did this car want to sound!

it is a battle to keep on top of road works, although we have a great relationship with all councils, the cygnet stage issues were simply an internal mis-communication within that council.

when i drove over sections of road such as peleverata and longley they did show signs of reacting to the warm day, but conditions were that same for everyone.

the attrition rate was about what i would have expected and many of the vehicles that failed to finish simply suffered mechanical problems, not crashes. that said, although its referred to has a mini-targa, the simple fact is that targa wrest point was a genuine sprint which required maximum attack on all stages with total focus on geevestona and tahune to do well.

the concept of introducing early modern has proved a winner, with many people now inspired to enter the proper amateur competition that is hard fought without the need of a half million dollar car and its nice to see non-professional drivers filling the podium. so well done to dave ayers (r33) and adam poole (r34) who give rep to nissan. 400r... what a good idea :P

i have to give a huge congrats to my wife kylie and her driver kim barwick who came third in classic... the a9x was apparently a very different office to the comfort of my previous gtr... go figure!

great to meet you snowy, sorry we didn't talk more. next time i'm in melbs you'll get a call.

the really tragic casualty of the weekend was my phone, i left it on the roof of the car and although it held onto the light bar it committed suicide after about 600m!... the tragic thing about this? its the second one i've done this to in some many weeks!

Hey Stu - everyone we spoke to on the boat home said the same thing about Glenlusk. Scary as hell doing recce but was an awesome stage to race on. Maybe because it was actually quite a busy road and hard to see on-coming cars that made the road appear so daunting until it was race time. And the one nice thing we got out from our retirement was we got to see the entire field go past on the way back down the hill and that VIP R35 was easily on of the best sounding cars out there. So angry!

And for anyone that is interested in the speeds, in my video you can see the speedo and straight up is 160km/hr.

Man, apart from doing such events in 170hp Escorts which you drive flat everywhere and top out at a 160km/h...i woudl want a 4wd car, with nice supple suspension. Your car seemed nice and stable even though you were dipping wheels etc . Goes to show just how crazy old Jim Richards is insisting on using the GT2 for these events :P = MAD

Was thinking last night how in the hell did you not rip the guard to shreds and have the wheel do a runner and i figure because you run the uber brakes you do the caliper and rotor is only a few mm away from the wheel so the rotational energy in the wheel had it just banging around on the rotor. Was there any damage to the wheel or rotor/caliper

Sorry to hear Snowy and Kel, but at least you're ok and the cars aren't too bad. Could have been a lot worse for both of you me thinks!

Snowy, I don't know how you were able to drive it for so long after you thought you had a flat. Lucky it didn't do more damage, I'm surprired it didn't.

The inside of the wheel has certainly looked better. So has the outter edge of the rotor. But even they both came out of it better than should have been expected.

But it was because the rotor is so massive that a) when the wheel did break off the car really only dropped a few mm (and didnt turn left well!) which is why I thought it was just a blow out, and b) when the wheel did finally fall off the rotor was big enough that the actual car body was still off the ground. There is only the smallest crack on the inside of the front guard but otherwise everything will be ok with just a quick machine and a touch of paint.

We really were immensly lucky to get away with what we have and that was one of the key factors to us not wanting to chance that luck again on the Sunday. We have had some people look at the 2 broken studs we found and they were both suffering from stretch fatigue probably from being over-tightened at some stage by an over happy rattle gun or something, so it looks like they may have been a big factor to letting go. I had actually replaced a rear one just recently when it broke off when I was just changing wheels at home so with hind sight I probably should have replaced all 20 then rather than just 1. I have 20 new ARP ones coming now though!

But anyone who watched the whole video would have seen before the wheel came off we had other issues anyways with the heat (water at 120degs after 17kms) so we are going to have to re-think the engine as well. All that go is well and good in short bursts but it may not be a long term option for this style of racing. In some ways maybe the wheel coming off saved my engine! And even if we do sort the heat we still have the fuel problem. We used close to 30L of fuel in that 21km's and we only had 25L of fuel at the top so I'm not sure we'd have got back to Cygnet anyways! lol. But at that consumption rate thinking long term there is no way we could finish the 49km Mt Arrowsmith stage even if we start with a full tank.

So plenty to do before we try again - but try again we will!! :P

What are you putting the heat issue down to Snowy? The only stage I've ever seen temp go higher than 110 in the 34 is Cethana, on the uphill side for 6 kays or so prior to the finish.

I'm also staggered by your consumption rate, we were getting around 80 competetive klm from a tank ($390! :P) . For istance, Day 5 Targa, we'd refill after Strahan and then do Queenstown, sort transport, then Arrowsmith, short transport, and have around 1/4 left?

I'm wondering if the 98 rule is affecting consumption significantly? ie pouring more in a bid to keep power up? Interested to hear how Adam Poole compared to your consumption......

The funny thing is we briefly met Adam on the weekend and the 1st thing he asked me was about pad knock off issues. I remember Dean asking me the same thing back in 2007! Seems everyone thinks its an issue but no-one wants to try and fix it. lol

I'm putting both the heat and fuel down to those pesky killer wasps. We'll kill a few of them off and see how it goes. I probably didn't need to be the 2nd fastest car in a 116 car field through the speed trap 400m into my 1st ever competative rally stage.....

We can turn it down and try and finish a few rallies and then think about how we go about turning it back up again if we want to. The funny thing is we actually took 30kw's out before we went to Tassie anyways but we might take another 50-60 out again and see how it goes.

we were worried again when we didnt see you on sunday but Mav said things didnt feel right so you thought best not to race.
