As it was wet and raining last nite, the police were out to get drivers running a muck. And as our precious skylines are cop magnets i was one of to be targeted. As my friend and I were leaving a cafe we jumped into the beast and waited for both sides of the traffic to clear in order for me to pull a u-bolt. As i did this there was an unmarked copa on the side of the road waiting for me to "do something". As i just casually done the u-turn and proceeded to drive normally. A marked copa pulls me over, then the unmarked copa pulled in front of me so i was boxed in. So i was thinking here we go. this doesnt look like ur ordinary alcohol check.

Asked me for my license, said here you go sir, gave me an alcohol test. passed it, then the copa in the unmarked Ford BA told me to pop my bonnet. As soon as he said that i was like shit!!!! so far it was standard protocol for an alcohol check but as soon as he said pop ur bonnet and get out, i was like daaaamn. So here is where i started to shine. Originally when i got pulled over i was quite and only answered the qns they asked me. as there were three cops in two cars (two uniformed in the marked VY commodore, and one undercover in the BA falcon) they all started to inspect my vehicle. The undercover seemed to be the copa that was getting asked the qns ie: the other two cops who had notebooks handy were asking the undercover copa if i could have "certain" items under my bonnet. In "my eyes" my car was totally "legal" and i proceeeded to convince all the cops that my car was perfectly legal!!! (no shit) i started to tell em in order:

->that i work at Ford and that i knew that the BA car that he was driving was a cop car, cause there was an antenna on the car (cause all the BA cars are on glass antenna's; exception of LWB.) here i scored some points with the copa's cause they knew two things: that i was an engineer for the car company that they are driving, and they knew that i knew about their car. so far Champinco 1, cops 0.

->that i regularly deal with ADR's at work and i knew about legality in turbo cars. Champinco 2, cops 0

->that u can have two legal mods on ur car then its considered illegal. (i had way more than two), Champinco 3, cops 0

->i have engineering certificates and ADR requirement sheets about my car at home, and i would be happy to provide them with such details. Champinco 4, cops 0

->that i had no BOV (exception of the standard one which they dont know where it is!) Champinco 5, cops 0

->my car was too low because my adjustable suspension was stuffed (it is atm) Champinco 6, cops 0

by the end of the inspection the two marked copa's didnt know wat was goin on, and in the end they asked the undercover copa if i was "alrite" (in terms of my car). he said cool and we all drove off hapily ever after.

Man talk about close and talk about spinning shit!!!

Even though what i was pretty much true anyways. I thought they were just going to dick me regardless.

This has happened to me twice so far, so the only advice i can clearly give to ppl if they get pulled over for a "random breath test":

->is to act cool, be quite at the start, then if they start to inspect ur car, rip the shit out of em in the nicest way:

->ie: know ur rights, tell em ur rights, but not in a smart ass way...laugh and smile and say sir, or officer, talk about the cars that they have, chances are that they love the cars that their driving and they will enjoy the conversation if u know their car as well.

->and drop the whole ohh why did u pull me over attitude. put ur self in their shoes and say something like..."ohh i completely understand officer, I woudnt want to do that to my dads car or risk any one being hurt" (cause it was wet and he thought i was goin to go sideways when i pulled the u-bolt.) furthemore it wouldnt hurt to slur ur esses. ie: thanksss officer i really appreciate it. as i am wog and about 80 of the wogs driving skylines have to whole attitude thing goin ie: what man, what did i do man. I diddnt do nuffin, with the whole west side attidue (im from west so dont start saying shit), try to get rid of the accent and attitude for 5 mins cause it could save u a canary. try to speak sophisticated and use words that u and they dont know. this way they will be slightly intimidated when u speak to em.

So in the end Champinco 6 Cops 0.

p.s: sorry about the lengthy email. i hope it gets archived and ppl can try to learn about this issue.

catch

any other qns or thoughts add to this tread.

Good work. Speaking intelligently to a cop, and just as a normal person rather than u vs them always helps..

Funny stuff..

Although I've always noticed cops have a pet hate about the rain. Hardly ever see a cop out in the rain, 'cause when they step out of the car then they'll get wet (awwww). So they like to pull people over on a nice day, even though in all likelihood its probably safer when its dry..

I have had a few run ins with the cops and your right,

you need to be polite ie: not a total smart ass. It's so important to know whats legal, the first time i was stopped i didnt know alot about modifications, and I had to bring the car back to standard. I then read up as much as I could about legalities and mods and slowly started building my car up again. When I was stopped again six months later I was able to tell the cops what mods I had and how they are legal, he let me go after ten minutes. Needless to say I still squirm everytime I see a cop.

I was pulled over coming home from Coles (Chapel) the other night. A motorbike cop heard my 'Pssssh' on gearchange.

He asked (re: the BOV) if I had one, I said 'two actually - they are stock on a GTR". He looked at my licence and tyres and said "that's fine, sorry to bother you". He didn't ask to look under the bonet.

Polite, truthfull responses (and no P-plates) make dealing with cops OK :)

Champinco

Please explain

->that i had no BOV (exception of the standard one which they dont know where it is!)

How is this possible

I will pick up my Skyline tommorow it has few mods including BOV

How on earth can you say that you dont have one and than in the same sentence you say that you have a standard one.

I can not underestand this.

At the same time I am worry about my New Skyline it has like 10 mods all up. Should I really buy it? I have one day to back out.

I can see it now.. "wait a sec officer.. I just have to check the standard SAU response manual for what I should say first" :)

I think a lot of cops are oblivious to the fact that many cars include a stock BOV as standard. Think just because it makes that "psht" you're running an atmosphere valve.

r33 sII skylines have stock BOV. They are hard to see...and dont even look remotely to an aftermarket (horn or other type) BOV.

So i have one, u have one, everyone has a BOV on their car no matter what. (unless u have taken it out). from the factory they come with a stock BOV.

So when the officer asked me if i had a BOV u wouldnt be stupid enought to say "why yes officer as a matter of fact i do, its the standard one and it come right here." All u need to say is no i dont. Plus when they ask u if u have a BOV they usually assume the riciey horn ones that are illegal. But just to make sure u dont say u have one at all. For two reasons i would say this:

a) they dont know what the standard one looks like and it doesnt really do much (in terms of our EPA standards)

B) the fact if u say u have a bov (regardless being standard) the copa's are inclined not to give u the benefit of the doubt and u'll get canaried.

hope this helps.

and predator lol about the SAU response book. that would piss em right off.

and lukiasarob if u have 10 mods on ur car.....well u better come up with a better story than me. i dont think ur 10 mods could apply to my story...ie: "no officer...my boost controller, aftermarket BOV, and 1cm off the ground spoiler kit are perfectly legal according to ADR requirements. furthermore my 140DB exhaust reading is merely a misinterpretation of constructive wave intereference where the u have measured it at the highest point where the two sound waves intersect." lol.

my advice would be to get familiar with legality of ur car....and maybe go to epa to get it checked out. cause a couple of mods (ie: less than 5) u can get away with...but 10.....well at least u know its a nice/rice/fast car.

champinco....if they pull u over because they heard a bov and u say u dont have 1.. they will think u are a smart arss...some times it dont work to act dumb..because if they heard sumfin just tell them that its a stock bov..because if u make them look stupid they will have the last laugh

i got pulled over for a pssssht noise and I don't have a BOV... not even a stock one... N/A's make a pshhht noise when they have hi flow headers and a colad air intake like mine... they thought I had a BOV and had a good laugh when the officer told me he couldn't find one after he pulled a hero act on me tellin me to pop my bonnet cos he thought I was lying, then I spent a good 5 mins explaining to him which models were N/A and how they're different to turbo models.

    • Been a while since I've heard anyone mention Kumho tyres. It's like they've fallen off the radar in terms of street/track tyres. I still want to get below 1m50s on the RS-4 tyres at SMSP, just because lol. Even doing a 1m52s lap, going into T1 was sketchy af.
    • I've run most of the semis which are available and sadly you can pretty much rank them by price.  Fast and spendy = Z221, A050, DZ03G Ok and mid range price = R888, V70A, A052 I don't really rate the AR-1 because it's not cheap enough for the performance level offered. Yes, they're much cheaper than A050 but V70A can be had just as cheap and is a much faster and more predictable tyre.
    • There's no current law that stipulates that you cannot eat dessert with a soup spoon, although, it is socially unacceptable of course, shame on you But, there are emissions laws, which is sort of on topic to the OP's questions Things like emissions are, if anything, going to get stricter in the future for road registered cars I believe, 'Merica has yearly emisions testing in some states, the UK has it's yearly MOT testing as well which includes emissions Building, and purchasing modified vehicles may become alot more problematic if you want to keep them registered, how, if, and when each state handles this is anyone's guess  More food for thought really
    • I'm on the AD09, strictly on the street. They are a very nice tyre, have done ~16k km and are near the end, might make it to 20. They are, in my opinion, very much just a street tyre. I wouldn't expect them to be equivalent to some of the others in your list on the track. Although I'd be pleasantly willing to be surprised. My memory of the AD08Rs is vague enough, due to the passage of time, that I shouldn't try to compare them, but I feel as if the AD09 is not quite as "sporty" as the AD08R was.
    • There's a difference between "selling" a product to someone (which, if you walked into a workshop or bricks and mortar store and bought and walked out with it, is just the act of buying and selling) and rolling your buggy into a workshop and having them fit non-roadworthy stuff to the car. And for the latter, let's ignore any potential legal loophole arguments that the armchair lawyer might want to make to differentiate between supplying your own parts to be fit by the workshop or getting the shop to supply and fit. The workshops that have been dealt with in the US for this are in the latter category. It would be near impossible to try to charge/attack/criminalise a shop for selling "for off road use only" parts to someone unless those things were intrinsically illegal in their own right, or had other legislation wrapped around them, such as there is for guns, pharmaceuticals, etc. Well, no. And you knew your argument was silly when you made it. And there is. it might be somewhat harder in Vic, but then that's the price you pay for electing the long list of (unts that you have to run the whole shit hole**. But otherwise, you can put an aftermarket or otherwise tunable ECU into a car and get it run through the whole shebang of emissions testing as part of an engineering cert and, so long as the tune is "locked" afterwards, then that modification is on the list that is approved on the cert. But....it is an expensive process. ** Of course, the (unts who make up a large proportion of the population that eternally try to get around the rules are also a part of the problem and the reason that you end up with draconian rules in the first place. By contrast, SA was founded and the government and civil service set up and run by very sensible types (largely German) who set up good structures that enabled a lighter touch of government on the somewhat better behaved population. it is only more recently that we have followed the rest of Australia down the criminal drainhole of penal colony behaviour and now we have to catch up with mobile phone cameras and so on.
