having some experience with project mu pads and rotors too, and having talked to lots of knowledgeable people in japan I have no doubt the project mu calipers would live up to expectation. if you find some at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to buy them. project mu make a good range of pads and replacement rotors also so that is comforting too.

There was a Sllver R33 GTR running in the WA round of the Dutton with 6 pot Project Mu fronts. Can't remember the car number - maybe one of the competitors will know. Check the Dutton website for entry list maybe.

my god that looks porn. that pritty much sells me on wat i was goin to do with wheels and brakes on my gtr now i f**king love those weds sa70's

I looked at Project U and personally wouldnt use them. Firstly their rotors are not curved vane, instead a spin on the DBA style kangaroo paw.

Secondly their 4 piston forged calipers use use 4 small pads which means you are stuck using Project U pads. Their 6 pot calipers have a wider range of pads but ... still not as widely available as other calipers.

Also, replacement rotors are expensive, though if you check with Paul Morris Racing he may be changing that as i believe he is the Australian distributer for all things Project U.

And lastly, which is a bit of a funny one, if you hunt around yahoo auctions i have seen calipers that are going cheap because they have split around the bleed nipple. So not so much a concern if you are buyign new. But a concern if buying used and the long term durability of some of the calipers.

But mostly because if you go Project U you are stuck using Project U rotors, pads etc etc.

That all said they do look great, and they do seem to have a loyal following, but those concerns are enough for me to say that Stoptech woudl be the better option... :(

Depending on which of the project mu rotors you get you can characterise the scr - pro series as incomplete vein, for example. See link & click on the view all pictures tag.

On the upside they do appear to be crack resistant & light. So I guess you don't get everything.

Edit: answered my own question which is the piston diameters in the 4 pot project mus are 41mm dia.

Also given that Project Mu don't use a radial mount for their callipers & their piston sizes are basically indistinguishable from the Sumitomo calliper & the silly 4 pad arrangement I can't think of a compelling reason to shell out for them. Other than they look pretty.

I felt a bit dirty wangering around Dutton taking photos of peoples brakes, but hey we all have our em, foibles.

Don't worry about it, I do it all the time! :(

Troy: yeah, I've thought about the pad issue before, which is what turned me off initially. Firstly due to cost of replacing them, and secondly due to availability. Having said that though, I do love the project mu pads I have in the car now, so it's not too much of a worry for me.

Also very happy with their rotors that I have, so again, not a major issue for me. But could be down the track... pardon the pun ;)

Buy yeah, the stoptechs will probably give me more options. And there's still the Greddy's in the mix as well... for what it's worth, I've seen the project mu's for $1200 less than what RHD wants for them, not delivered though.

Most delivery quotes I've had have been around the $150-200 mark, so let's say 1k less than RHD's price. Pretty enticing... ;)

Thanks for the advice Troy. I knew someone had mentioned you'd contemplated them.

What is the reasoning for having a radial mount as opposed to lug? Why is it better, apart from being easier to mount (from what I'm aware)?

Looks tasty. Couple things:

1. How can I get a part number for that rotor, ie 345x32 scr pro for a GTR?

2. What piston area do the 4 pot callipers have?

Try [email protected]

Last time I emailed them I got no response... so good luck!

Radial mount is easier as the bolts holding the mount to the hub are at right angles to those holding the calliper to the mount.

At the end of the day if you can make it work there isn't much of a difference.

And yeah. I got fk all info out of anyone regarding the 345x32 rotors too.

you can get the 4 piston kits in regular 2 pad arrangement too. and rotors are not that bad at about $300 a pop, hats are exxy though about $450 a pop.

but your points are valid brisbuddy. no one wants calipers that crack, and limited to PMU pads may be a turn off for some.

dj: the pmu calipers I have looked at are radial mount. maybe the street level ones are not?

like so:

the little 4 pad ones are too.

Yeh, i didnt realise that that 4 piston caliper doesnt even have differential piston sizing. :) Also re the vanes, surface area i sking of cooling, so is mass. I think it comes down to cost of manufacture...but they do seem supremely robust with nobody cracking them.

I love the Project U 6 piston calipers, mostly because they look trick and seem to hug/saddle the rotor nicely. But when it comes to actually paying money for them i couldnt see myself doing it

Sounds odd about cracking about the bleed nipples. Unless they are tapered & over tightened you wouldn't imagine that would be a particularly stressed area.

I think you are right with the mounts. Must have been the generic photo I was looking at. Either that or they are actually radial mounted & just missing some studs.

Looking at the calipers pictured the bleed nipple is nowhere near the edge of the caliper/pistons. So perhaps it is only th eolder style of caliper that fails as the ones pictured seem to have lots of meat around the nipple?!?! Will pay closer attention next time i see them.

GT-R brembo's - $1500

DBA5000 or equivalent discs - $1000

Braided lines - $200

Pads - $300

I can buy Stoptechs brand new for less than that.

I've looked into Stoptechs and would get them asap if I could find a cheap source, particularly since they are comptible with a lot of Brembo stuff including rotors, pads and adapters. The figures above total $3000, if you can get 355mm Stoptechs for less let me know and I'll go in with you to negotiate a better price for 2 sets if you decide you want them also! Last time I checked with the local distributor it was way over $3k, but maybe things have changed :)

They sell for $2695 in the US, which is great since the $ is so high, but freight is a killer.

Cheers

Rotors are not the same between Brembo and Stoptech. They are damn similar but Stoptech use different style hats which means you cant use a brembo rotor with a Stoptech hat etc. Personally thats why i see the Stoptechs as being just a tad better then the Brembo as the rotors are cheaper to replace, on paper (who knows in the real world) Stoptechs hats could be better, and they also throw a bridge over the top of the caliper for rigidity. Though thats not reall a problem with the F40/50s.

LOl i am talking myself into buying some Stoptechs :)

Thanks Roy, what I should've said was the dimensions of Brembo and Stoptech rotors are the same so you can use Brembo calipers with Stoptech rotors etc. I've got some F40 calipers and wanted to mate them to Stoptech 355 2 piece rotors and adapters for $1295 US...bargain...but I'm not keen on the $450 US freight charge they want, seems ridiculous at 30% of the cost of the parts.

Is that 3 sets then?

i'll be upgrading my brembo kit in the next couple of weeks and a few of you guys are talking about this package.....any ideas what it's worth to sell?

off 33gtr -

brembo calipers front and rear

dba 4000 discs front and rear (50%)

spare set of original discs (guessing around 50% too)

pagid blue pads (50%)

spare set of rb74 pads (50%)

and original brakes lines.
