Forgive me if this is an obvious question - but just wanted to be sure.

I've got a more or less stock RB20 in my 32. Standard turbo, boost, ECU, etc. Only mod is a 3" exhaust from the turbo all the way back and a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox.

Driving around as normal, the turbo sounds pretty. Regular smooth hiss. But if I open it right up with full throttle, I got a real audible whistle coming from the turbo when it reaches full boost.

Just wondering what's causing this, and whether it's something I should be worried about? I haven't owned a turbo car previous to this one. I searched and read through a bunch of threads, but no one mentioned these same symptoms.

I'm planning to go to the dyno day on Saturday, and don't want to go running it if the turbo is on it's way out.

check for cracks on the exhaust manifold / lose bolts mine did the same, i had crack almost all the way around the manifold. Next one was loose bolts on the manifold... Good places to start with, check bolts to turbo as well.

Depending on how much air is escaping, it probably won't...

My car has a tiny leak and has had for 8 or so months... when the standard box is on, it sounds like a kettle :P Can't hear it with the pod cause of all the induction noise...

Doesn't effect power at all, but I have the tiniest of leaks, it only happens on boost... I had every intention of fixing it, but it never got any worse so my laziness got the best of me :)

Hah. Alright, no problem. I've been meaning to do it on mine but I'll do it at the same time as the turbo upgrade, seeing as I have to take it all out to do it anyway.

Anyone one else care to weigh in on the matter?

no they pretty much got it right... definately sounds like an ex manifold leak... performance wont change much initially, but as the crack widens will get worse.. plus you get weird looks from people as you drive past them sounding like a tractor :D Should be able to get someone to weld it back together for < $100 or otherwise, a new manifold is going to set you back ~$1k+ for a 6boost.

I wouldn't leave it too long though, the hot exhaust gases can gouge the metal, creating a groove, then you have to get it welded and machined back. If its not too big you can get away with putty etc, but they usually fail again eventually if you don't weld. :blink:
