Hey guys, currently i own an s13 sr20det. Its ok. But i'm looking to move into something different. And since i've always had a fascination with Supra's (especially Targa Tops) i am considering going down that path.

Few questions i do have tho are:

- Are targa tops available in RZ form? If so how available are they?

- What are some common problems with targa tops? Rust? leaks?

- What are the differences between SZ and SZ-R?

- What sort of power does a stock SZ put out?

- What sort of power does a stock RZ put out?

- Do SZ's come in 1JZ or 2JZ form?

- What are some common problems with these motors?

- What are some common problems with supra's in general? driveline? Gearbox? Internals (pfft...yeah right)? Anything?

Thats all i can think of right now. But if i think of anymore i'll let you know.

Problems with the targa's are leaks and internal rust and also rattles, they are the more common ones, also consider that in aus you can only get auto targa tops, unless they have been converted.

Targa's are easy enough to find from private sales, harder from dealerships, just need to take your time and look.

The power of the RZ and SZ is pretty decent, not entirely sure about the numbers, but a quick google search will let you know.

I havent heard of many "common" problems with the motors. As far as i am aware they are pretty strong and they dont break easily, that includes the gearbox.

Hope that helps you a bit, as i said the supra club is your best bet.

they are avaliable in NA man and auto and TT auto only . Also TT auto targa stops very early , 94 i think from memory.

rust , leaks , rattles . not worth the hassle especially as you have to manually remove the top

sz-r has 6 speed gearbox

- What sort of power does a stock SZ put out?

approx 150kw ish , they are slower than the sound though

- What sort of power does a stock RZ put out?

208 officially

- Do SZ's come in 1JZ or 2JZ form?

all jza80 supras use 2jz

- What are some common problems with these motors?

head gaskets , sensor problems as they get old , coil packs in turbos and distributors in n/as , internally very strong

- What are some common problems with supra's in general? driveline? Gearbox? Internals (pfft...yeah right)? Anything?

minor electrical and suspension problems , rust . engine and drive train is very strong if looked after properly.

dunno where you get headgaskets from as being a problem ^ maybe your htinking of the 7m-gte

SZ-R had options like big brakes etc, just narrowed the gap between the TT and NA, while still retaining the NA engine. NA is like 168kw (or something near that), TT is 206kw as is every other jap car 'officially'

common problems, arent any really, sometimes the hatch will rattle a bit as will a couple of other things (its an old car now). you'll probly find its more wear and tear rather than problems as such

yeah the 2jz has a metal headgasket standard- rectification for the lousy head bolt torque which caused the gasket problems on the 7m.

a standard 2jz-gte (with exhaust and pod etc) will pump out around 220rwkw. apparently it's tricky to up the boost simply due to the sequential setup.

good cars though, extremely good suspension design also so go very very well through corners. the 6 speed is unbreakable and the rz has a torsen lsd.

plus at 1420kg ish for the sz and 1480kg is for the RZ they aren't really heavy.

Ok so basically if i want a manual RZ i have to sacrifice the targa top? hmmm...i guess it would probably be worth it.

Gotta try and get behind teh wheel of a few..see if i like them or not

Thanks very much for the plug Terry :wave: Just to clarify, before all the Supra nuts go crazy, the RZ isn't actually a limited edition as such, it's just fairly rare because I believe it cost a lot more than the RZ-S back in the day, and it's the most sought after model :) Oh, and it's black, which is also one of the most wanted colours!

I'll try and answer the questions as best I can, but it looks like some of the others have covered the more technical stuff better than I can anyway!

I am willing to sell mine as long as I can get a fair price for it (PM me if you'd like to test drive and we can discuss this later), as I've only had it for about 9 months and it seems silly to sell it so soon *and* lose a lot of money on it! The price I have in mind is fair (to me anyway).

OK, targa tops: from what I've heard, the Supra wasn't designed with a targa top in mind, so when you remove the roof, apparently it flexes a LOT which adversely affects the handling and chassis stability, etc. I think it improves a lot with the roof in place (so why get a targa top in the first place?), but I'm not sure if it's still as good as the fixed roof. Personally, I'd avoid the targa top, especially if you're considering one with big power.

Another personal opinion here, if you're going to go for a Supra, assuming you want performance and not just the looks, *definitely* go for the turbo. Having said that, I've never actually ridden in an N/A so I can't vouch personally for how fast it feels, but from what I've read, it's a fair bit slower than even a stock turbo. I think coming from a turbo car, you wouldn't like the N/A.

Like everyone else has said, the driveline, gearbox, internals, etc. are all pretty reliable. I got mine compression tested and got exactly the same reading for every cylinder, and the leakdown test was also excellent (can't remember what it was exactly though).

My own car was last dynoed at 263.5rwkw @ 18 psi (Terry sampled it at "only" 16 psi which is about 235rwkw) and honestly, it's about as much as you could use on the road, at least with RWD. I've got the turbos in TTC (True Twin Conversion) mode, which just means that they both spin equally fast (like in the GTR), not as in the original sequential setup. Some people prefer this way, some people prefer the SEQ way, and there is a 10 minute mod that allows you to swap between the two modes easily, but unfortunately mine has been permanently modified - apparently to make the engine bay look "cleaner". Fortunately I've found the guy who bought the removed items so I can return it to SEQ mode if need be, but it's OK how it is anyway. You really notice the extra 0.5L capacity over the 2.5L GTS-T's engine.

Basically, my car has been setup ready for a "big single" turbo, and I've been considering doing this for some time, but I think I'd rather sell the car and get something a little more practical. I've got a PowerFC, HKS twin-plate clutch with lightened flywheel, 1000cc injectors, HKS FMIC, and a few other mods all around. All quality brand name parts, and there may be a few surprise mods that were in there from Japan (say like a big fuel pump or something), as looking at the level of mods on there, it looks like it once used to be a big HP car.

One word of advice: if you're looking to buy a pre-modified car, DO NOT buy from Japan or interstate, as you will have big problems with compliance and/or the blue slip! I learnt this the hard way after buying mine from Perth. It will be MUCH easier (and cheaper) to just buy a pre-modded one from NSW! The reason for this is because when you purchase a car from outside NSW, you need to get it blue slipped, and that requires the car to be bone stock. Same with importing one from Japan.

    • Fuse taps are perfectly fine to use, especially when you're adding stuff for your own car, and so long as you're being smart about it. IE, don't throw a 30amp circuit, onto a circuit that is only a small circuit. It's best to add a small circuit, to one that is already quite large. Oh, and make sure you're not going to blow the fuses that are further upstream too! I dislike their use in other applications, such as alarms, telematics/tracking devices etc, as it's far too easy for someone to unplug them and render a system useless. Those sorts of devices I go for wiring in quite secretively.
    • Fob is all cleaned up and it’s working well!! The amount of Vegemite looking sh*t that was in there is mind blowing 
    • Given it is temporary, I bought a  cheapy gauge mount (which has become enflattened) which I will screw into the existing phone mount Also a first for me; given this is a temporary install I could not think of any reason not to use one of those "add a fuse" thingies to source the battery and IGN power. I had always figured they were pretty dodgy but having a good look at them I think they are a valid option for sourcing power from an existing source without cutting
