Hey Lads.

With my impending date with the EPA comin next week, im just in need of one more part. I spoke to the geezers at RE customs, they think that If I just change my exhaust from the Cat back I should be sweet with passing Noise and Emissions test. Now With so many brands and Sizes out their Im a Tad confused, Im assuming 3'' will definantly be a winner with noise. but what Make and Model should I get and How much am I looking at forking out.

Cheers.

hey mate. umm i gpt EPAd before on my N/A 34, and since i had a sports exhaust on which was fairly loud and didnt have a stock one i had one made up (to pass epa) from the cat back. which is a stockish one for about $100 if you wanted to borrow it to pass the test you could. thats only if you wanted to put your old one back on after.

otherwise to get one made up from the cat back you'll be quoted most probably about $500. pretty much most sports exhausts i found out are 'illegal' cause of the noise decibal level as our car can only have a 90 decibal limit. i passed mine with my stock made up one got 84 decibals.. lol

heres a pic attachment of the stock system if you want to wish to borrow for EPA.

Just remember they note down the size of the exhaust you go to the test with.

So later on, if you get defected again and again for a noisy one, and then keep rocking up with a smaller one... you'll be in a spot of bother with fines and what not.

Just something to remember. Once is ok, i wouldnt try it 3-4 times.

This is very true! they also count how many mufflers/cats you have and make a sketch of what your exhaust system looks like!

so if you get caught a few times either get a 3" system made to comply with the allowed noise levels or pay the $30 to get new number plates lol

^ this i did not know, cheers for the info Ash/Ruffels

i have a HKS Super Dragger catback (modified from an R33) that is as quiet as anything.... at track days and what not, where the cars are idling, get numerous people asking if my car is even on.

The rest of the system is full 3" stainless, split dump/front pipe, 3" hi flow cat. So it is possible to have a 3" system, with a jap aftermarket catback that is legal.

I don't know what db my exhaust is, but not one cop has even bothered to check it when i've been pulled over. But it's f*cking huge exhaust though, 5" tip i think and the main part obviously bigger again, might have something to do with it, i dunno. Shelter for the homeless exhaust i call it :)

what will they do to you if they know you keep changing your exhaust? like u just put a small one on to pass, then put 3" back on, and keep doing that, if they know you are, what will they do to you?

umm im not 100% sure but im pretty sure you keep getting bigger f**k off fines, i read on the sheet something like up to 6,000 not sure though might have to confirm with someone else.

Sounds the same as what I've got on the GTR, the exhaust varies from 2.75 inch to closer to 3.25 inch on the outside so I'm pretty sure its a 3inch, HKS Super Dragger muffler (with massive tip, JASMA approved), and large mid-muffler.

Extremely quiet on idle but loud at high revs, so unless you drive around the street at 5K RPM your fine :)

Unfortunately there not made anymore, but there's plenty of other choices out there.

Daldar exhausts can install a Redback Sports catback/pipe system for ~$350 which is designed to sit just under the EPA Level Although its not an asian brand its a good option if you wanna stay safe.

I plan to have one installed in a few weeks with just a really loud rear muffler on and if i ever get EPA's just have them switch out the muffler for the redback recommended one and i know im safe.

    • You have the option to do this. Nobody but me ever did this (go slower, I mean) Everyone seems to fall victim to "This would be a great setup for you, but for me, I need a little more power..."
    • Save yourself the headache of an alarm. Immobilizer on the signal side of the main EFI relays so it won't start is good enough. DIY killswitch is the same thing except instead of a nice passive system you need to remember to switch it on and off.

    • There's a post from a member (can't recall who), went down the path of a twin scroll G30-660 and it's doing over 300kW+ AND comes on about the same as a high flow RB25DET turbo. Have your cake and eat it too in this case. TBH, if I had a 2nd chance of building my car again (i.e. someone gave me what I wanted for my shit box, but the deal was I had to re-build another R33 and keep the change) I would just pop in a stock NEO motor (with new seals, rod bearings, ARP studs, head gasket, sump, Nitto pump), get a smaller twin scroll turbo, modify the stock low mount (keep the divider in place), and make a solid 300kW on 98RON and call it a day.
