Hey all, Thought I'll share my disapointment with you all to make myself feel better. After purchasing my '93 gtr I thought it was a bargain (dealer sale), However it turned out not to be after my panel beater had a good look over today :( . Mind you outside panels are very straight and the car feels stock and very good mechanically.

To cut it short rust found in four spots in middle of the floor along the shasis rail and at the rear guards (inside) where some fabrication required (holes).

Also some rust around and behind the petrol tank. Not to mention some surface rust around suspension parts and in the boot.

O and the whole underbody was freshly sprayed with that tar stuff so I couldn't see properly :D

So anyone buying a skyline be aware or if you just got one have it checked out to avoid disapintment.

So the pain and cost of owning one of the great cars ever produced continues.................................. where does it stop?

Mad Dave

yer i had some rust aswell mate, i took my car to my panel beater to get a full spray job as i got really sick of gunmetal, i had rust in my driver rear quarter and some under my sin panel, ig ot it all cut out and professionally re-done as i cant stand rust, my car was at the panle beater for over 6 motnhs but i got it back fully restored, i really think every r32 gtr has rust, people say they have no rust but they cant see it can they, put it up on the hoist, rip your side skirts off and see, i got my gtr checked all in and out and the rest seemed to be fine but you never know if there is anymore do you knwo what i mean, noone knows, people just look undeer there cars, in the boot, in the quarters and wow there is no rust im going to get this car, doesnt matter there is rust on late r33 gtr so dont be surprised mate your not the only one with rust

cheers mate

Thanks mate. I know what you saying I was always expecting some rust here and there but not holes.I do agree that all GTR's have rust as some people are what you don't know you don't know.

I'll say if you are keeping your GTR for a long time have it checked before it rusts under you.

My car is still there getting repaired (2-3 wks) but once its done it will be like new.

All in all not to faul when I add purchase price and pro rust removal job, other then that the car is good no rebuild needed...............................yet!

Dave

Mine had a bit of rust aswell, but their wasn't holes or anything just abit on drivers rear guard.. but i got it bead blasted out.

I don't believe all GTR's have rust, thats rubbish in my opinion. Its all based on negligence and how they have been stored etc.

Ive seen many R32's fully stripped down for a full build up with not a speckle of rust.. Its the luck of the draw i guess.

tai i understand what yuuo say mate, but are you telling me there is not at least a little bit of rust out there in every r32 gtr, nearly every person i know that owns an r32 gtr out there has rust its because they find out it haas rust, the people that think they dont have rust are the people that havnt got there car checked out, beleive me man? there is rust on r33 gtr aswell mate but yer maybe there is some cars here and there that have what less then 10,000kms(genuine kms) maybe dont have rust but all the other gtr especially the r32 will have rust mate, doesnt have to be in your guards it can be newhere else, in the boot, under the car so yer man

Mate any car can have rust... Your saying they come from factory with rust?

Like i said i've seen R32's been fully stripped down with no rust. Heck i dare say My r33 didn't have any rust either, as it was stripped to a bare shell aswell. Even my 1985 Toyota AE86 didn't have rust and the known to rust.

In japan they put bags of salt on the roads to dissipate the ice, therefore it can lead to rust and most of the cars imported have been sitting for long periods of time.

I know alot of r32's have rust, as did mine. But you can't say they all have rust.

I'm willing to put money that most of the 100 or so Aus delivered GTR's have no rust... it's all about climate, and how people store/treat their cars.

Anyway over it, Sorry for messing up your thread Donutdavid

man every person that i know that has a r32 has abit of rust, wat part of 'common problem' dont you know, yerr ull put money that MOST aus gtr dont have rust, probbably non of them do but i guarantee the ones that come from japan have rust, it can be newhere,

u have probably stripped a whole car but you havnt stripped under the car, bro from the outside it can be normal but you dont know what there could be on the indde of the panles n shit just luike mine it looked so perfect, straight and all but from the inside it had rust but its all fixed now so i dont really care or im not worried,

anyways donutdavid sorry about this aswell mate but just trying to get stuff clean and cleasr==r if you know what i mean

cheers

No it's all good boys. I just thought to share my discovery with you and just to raise some awarenes for people that intend to keep their car for long.

I do agree that rust level depends on garaging owner in Japan and also area of Japan as well.

I think mine was sitting/ driven on mushy salt/ice roads given the rear quater panel holes. Once it's all cleaned, plate welded, treated, primed and painted it will be just like new again.

I'm also removing the seats and carpet to check the other side of the floors.

Deren's signiture (my restoration thread) sums it all up as GTR's and empty walets go hand in hand.

Cheers

Dave :(

  • 1 month later...

i got the same issue with u dave.. i got an late year 94 r32 gtr, some rust and hole can even see with ur eyes, really headache with em :nyaanyaa: i haven't got time to check the under the car yet.. i think i will have a big disappointment.. sigh..

Mine has a couple - mine was in a minor accident hit in the driver rear back in Japan. With the repair they didn't seal it up properly so the water got in in the boot jamb (under where the sealant is) and a tiny one down in the wheel well down in the corner.

Very minor job and has hardly changed since I imported it - but I want to get someone to really fix it properly.

GTRBOS - who did you use? - im in Melbourne also
