Hi again,

I've kinda high jacked this thread, but have had this car inspected and it's come back as an extremely clean GTR.

My only concern is around the engine. The VIN has been checked again and is definately an N1 chassis. I've had the engine casting checked though and it's 05U NOT 24U, and have spoken to several people who are adamant that ALL N1's are stamped 24U.

BUT, I've also checked the engine number on the block, and this matches the number on the build plate, suggesting that it's the original engine the car left the factory with. Again this would make you believe it's an N1 stamped with 05U.

The inspector also said that there is no way the engine has been swapped as all the mounts show no sign what so ever of a swap.

Everything on the car is immaculate with the only issue found being a bit of shudder under brakes.

Logically my mind says that all of the above points to the car having an N1 engine. Would people agree?

For any other variant i wouldn't be concerned, but the main reason in my mind, paying a bit more for an N1 is for the engine.

can the engine number itself be used to check what engine it is? I've been told fast can't do this? If anyone can help the number is RB26 029655A

Thanks

Bobby

Hey dude,

I been following this forum for a few days now, and most signs point to it being an N1.

But..

If most people suggest that the engine number is incorrect it is more than likely that it is, because the odd dozen or so people that have replied to your questions dont have any intention on making money out of the sale.

Think about it that way. They are making a sale out of this, they will tell you whatever you wanna hear dude just so you fork out the 26k only so they can get a fatter wallet.

Ive worked with car dealerships, i dont like them, at all. Ive never considered buying a car from them for that exact reason. Because i know they have the money to promote, to pull strings, to make something beautiful when under the surface, whether you ever find out or not is something completely different.

If it was me, i would be careful, very careful when looking at something so rare.

I love the N1's, but i dont love dealerships and what they can do and what i have seen them do first hand.

In my opinion i would give it a miss, maybe wait a bit longer or even go with something like a V-spec or something similar, they still have all the goodies, and arent usually f**ked with to make a sale.

You still get the brembos, you have the choice of colour, still have a V-spec car which would be one of what..1400 or so ever built.

They still hold their value, still beautiful cars, with less chance in my opinion of being f**ked with to make a quick sale.

just my opinion

Whatever you do dont make a decision based on what i just said, but take it on board please?

Impound :(

Ah, but that's the problem, you see the engine number matches the build plate.

so far everything I have seen about 05U v 24U casting stamp has been what people believe to be the case.

The engine number 100% matches the build plate. and in my mind, I doubt Nissan would have built an N1 Chassis with a standard motor. It makes no sense.

Either way, the car is still an exceptional car, no doubt about it. It simply cannot be faulted. Everything is original down to the exhaust. The log books trace the cars history to present and match the speed o, so on this alone to me the car is worth it. N1 or not.

Also the yard in no way is pressuring me to believe anything. In fact they are leaving it to me to make my inquires. I asked them to check the casting numbers, and rightly so, they said we can say anything. Don't rely on us and check it all yourself. Hence my questions.

"I doubt Nissan would have built an N1 Chassis with a standard motor. It makes no sense"

Sorry to be so definite and picky on points bro, but thats the thing, if you doubt something, i dont think its a good idea, im sorry, but all i have learn with buying cars is if you doubt something it might not end well.

for instance, i know its a completely different thing, but i bought a HD Special Holden off of an elderly man who claimed it was his sisters car and she had it since new, so one owner, all the books, all the nasco accessories and so and and so forth.

turns out the car was in a big bender, had a roof chop and change done because it was creased, the panels had been replaced, and i had the RAA come and inspect the vehicle, HD collectors check it out, everything.

i only bought to sell, if i didnt find all that shit out the car would have been worth a good $20k.

but one loose nut on the guard i noticed when i looked at it originally, if i said no, it would have saved me $5k.

Also thats how dealerships will work, make you feel in control because they know that they will make a sale one way or another

Yep, can see your point, but as stated N1 or not the car itself is immaculate.

I've checked as much as possible and all panels are orginal, paint depth has been checked on all panels, no sign of any damage on the undercarriage, engine compression test has been done, and all passed with flying colours.

I have no concerns at all about the condition of the car. None.

all good dude,

sorry again to be so picky about shit, but ive worked with dealerships, ive done some dodgy dodgy shit before, so im just putting my idea's in.

i just know what can be done through dealerships, thats all im saying, if it was me i would buy an example that wasnt so sought after.

plates can be swapped, complaince plates can be dodged, anything can be made to look original, and anything can be forged.

i didnt learn how to make money at school or through legitimate business dude.

thats all i feel i have to say

'Yep, can see your point, but as stated N1 or not the car itself is immaculate"

an immaculate GTR isnt worth 25k dude.

im sorry.

but i just dont like seeing people make the same mistakes that i have before and getting excited about things and not thinking clearly about a situation.

All the best bro, all the best

See, a car is worth what someone is willing to pay.

I also think for such a rare car the asking price is not so bad. As a comparison, try and find a V-spec R32, with 60000k's, logs, in this condition, and show me it's price.

To me i have no problem paying for a car i like and know will enjoy. This car as said is also an N1 GTR, as the chassis code states. The engine matches the build plate so again points to N1.

The whole 24U casting question i have only raised as so far all i have is peoples opinions on what is an N1 and what isn't. Nothing concrete. The only "official" check done through Nissan Fast says the car is an N1.

As for not thinking clearly i have made every possible check on the car one could reasonably make. Can you suggest what I've missed?

I find it odd that you're really trying to steer me away from buying this car. You've made 4 posts on this forum only and all are telling me not to buy this car. Have you seen the car? Is there something wrong with the car in your opinion, or do you expect me to turn away from a great car (decided through numerous checks) based on a theoretical situation which may have happened to you in the past and has nothing to do with this car? I am more than happy to take on everyone's opinion, after all that's why i have been a member of this forum since it started, however as said your really not giving me any reason to doubt the quality of this particular car. Rather saying it could be this, could be that.

Believe me this is no rushed decision. I have owned and driven imports for many years, I am not some 17 year old hanging to buy their first import. I did that well over 10 years ago. And as said every reasonable check has been made on the car.

But it's all a bit futile, I have a deposit on the car, i like the car, I'll buy the car. If it turns out not to be an N1, well then I've paid a bit more than most for an immaculate R32 GTR. Something I can live with.

Cheers

Thanks guys,

I've had the car for a couple of days and it's unbelievable. In all honesty it's tighter and feels newer than the 2004 V35 I just sold.

The engine seems in great condition, and it idles a little "lumpier" than a stock GTR so i am thinking cams of some sorts. I haven't pushed it at all but it does seem to get up and go from around 4200rpm onwards.

Still has stock clutch, stock suspension, and stock exhaust.

In the wheels arches the paint seems almost as clean as the outside, so it looks like it hasn't even seen rain. Interior is faultless.

My only dilemma is do i leave it as is, and keep it as a rare untouched N1, or do i have some fun with it.

My mind is telling me not to touch it.

Check the Down and Front pipes out.

R32 Down and Front pipes are quite restrictive, replace them with 3" pipes, get a high flow cat and you can leave the stock catback as it is about 3" all the way.

Maybe change those stock R33 rims to Nismo LMGT4's, get the Nismo Side skrits and Spats and leave the rest.

Cool!

Wrap her in cotton wool Bobby, the R33 rims may have been factory, maybe not? see if you can track down the nismo wheels fitted to this release of N1, if you like em, fit them, the first time I laid eyes on this glamour, it was the perfect condition and the stock body profile which kept me looking at it for hours, im sure anyone who looks at this thing in person will agree, dont touch it! as for the mechanicals, tweaking it only makes you want to explore its power more, it has great compreesion, you want it to have it that way in another 16 years! If you want something to play with I have a very tidy R32 V-spec you can also buy,you have my number, call me. anyway, good to see your happy it.

    • Mate you saved be from dying in the Perth summer. AC wasn't changing direction and just going into diagnostics mode fixed it. You're a legend and I would shout you a beer if I could!
    • Unfortunately effort gone to waste, you will have substantial issues with how the manifold and wastegate have been integrated. You would be so much better off with a modified stock manifold like this: https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25detexgatedmanifold/   OR literally just getting a off the shelf Sinco or 6Boost manifold as myself and others have mentioned.
    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
