some jealous neighbours or d1ckhe4ds can give EPA a call and said to them: "Oh I know this car with loud exhaust plate no...."

or "I saw this car blowing smoke out of the exhaust" (although it's a freezin cold morning and your exhaust smoke is white which is water condensation which should go away after your car warmed up - they dont understand this coz they're such a moron)

Any of these jerks call the EPA, then you'll get a notice, any scum these days can do that one phone call just to annoy you.

So was it for noise or for gas pollution?

i got done by some coppers for too loud! took it to an exhaust shop, gave em $5 and they tested it-- 93 Db close enough

then send them the form --- thats if they didn't send you to the pits for it!!!

..you have to know who it is..

I think the way it works is if its a member of the public they have to have multiple reports. If its a cop they just have to report you once. It was probably a cop.

Half the time they have absolutely no idea what they are doing anyway. I was reported, but mine was a nice and legal 89db so i had to do the run around for no reason.

Both are issued to say that the car is safe to be driven on the road.

The EPA doesn't have anything to do with safety issues, it's a matter of pollution, either air, or noise.

And instead of "innocent until proven guilty", with the EPA, you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent.

i only had my car for about 3months b4 i got a letter from the epa saying a cop has noticed my car making excessive noise (even though it “had” a completely stock exhaust)… it was a warning notice but it said if i get another i will have to take my car down to the epa for testing… pissed me off cos now iv lost my warning for too loud for no reason..

Yes, but to be registered, the car also has to meet all emissions and other standards. Its a dubious one, but as the cop wasn't there to explain to him (e.g. refer him to the compliance plate date), there isn't too much you can do.

Don't stress about it at all.. the stock exhaust is way under, and so are many aftermarket exhausts. Mine is full HKS Super Dragger II system and its fully noise legal.

You go to an exhaust place, 10-15 mins they do the test, you pay your $30 and they clear it on the spot. You continue to drive carefree.

Just got to watch how they test it some of them stick it right up your exhaust to check it, they have to be a meter away on a 45deg angel on the opposite side of the exhaust and I think it's up to 4000rpm they test you at and most of the time it's on back off that's that's when the DBA climbs.

just got back from the test- took 5 mins...

"The noise level emitted from this vehicle tested at 3,200 RPM was 87 dB(A).

Accordingly i am satisfied that this motor vehicle complies with..... in that the noise emitted... does not exceed the max. permissible noise level of 99 dB(A)."

so i was well off, even though i watched it click 91dB...

stressed for nothing ey...

I just pulled out the EPA defect I got in Apr 02 and it states that the limit is 90dB at 4800rpm. I got this defect for a reading of 92dB measured .5m from the exhaust tip at an angle of 45deg.

I shouldn't have looked this up cause now I'm pi$$ed off again.

There is no difference when it comes to doing a DBA test they should do it all the same.

I reckon they should leave as alone and pick on them dam Harley's. Maybe wee should all wear leather jackets and call our selfs Hell's Sky's and do a charity run once a year works for them.

4,800 rpm is a bit excessive.... I was under the impression that they had to do the reading based on the speed of a vehicle...... Which is 110kph MAX. (aussie law)

So if you do 100-110 at 3.2 - 3-5 that is where the DB measure SHOULD be taken.

5,000 rpm in most car's is loud at the best of time's......

Yer but.. there is something about OR 3/4 of the maximum rev range in there..

it all varies to be honest depending on where you take it. Everybody hears different things..

Mine was tested at 5200rpm.. and had to be under 90db at that range.

    • How do they compare in size? I have the Yaris coil packs in mine and they work fine. But they are either bigger or sit differently so the engine cover doesn't fit anymore. Not the end of the world but not great either. Do the R35 ones sit flush?
    • Righto,  enough of ADHD Anonymous! 🤣🤣 Rear end is completely stripped out apart from coil overs that will take 5 minutes.  Fingers crossed it doesn't look like that for too long!   Cleaning up some bits as I go so they can go straight back on. It amazes me how good stuff looks just with a good hard scrub! That will be it for a couple of weeks. I've got ot a bit of surgery Friday that will put me out of action for a few weeks. Hopefully the motivation is still there when I'm ready to get back into it!
    • The povo spec CA18S one, yeah. All turbos had 16x6.5 5 stud and 4pot brakes.
