clearly these are a track tyre, but for me my car does so little mileage I'm considering just keeping them on all the time. This means they're got to be good in the wet and whilst I'm aware they're going to be noisier than a road tyre, not be so OTT in the noise dept to drive me crazy.

Also, any views on how a 235 will fit on a 9" rim? Too small.

Be glad to hear from anyone who has experience of running RE55s on the road or has free advice for me :ermm:

i am using them now as i rarely drive my car...in my opinion, its not worth it. I dont think you generate enough heat for them street driving to be effective in the wet. I definitely wont do it again, but it does make the car look tough. Just my opinion though

235/45 re55's are a big tyre. they will not be stretched on a 9 inch rim. i would say they are close to a 255 street tyre in width.

I have run semis on the street and i will never do it again. terrible when cold, scary in the wet.

What semis were they RE55s WT? Or something else? I've run Dunlop semis on my 16" and they're fantastic in all road conditions and are not that noisy. Thanks.

I had dunlop dj01s (i think) on the front and some old bridgestone re55 on the rear. They were on a set of wheels i bought. noisey as f**k. I never bothered to check the type but i'd hazard a guess that they were hard compound (SP on the old re's)

$250 rim repair when they suddenly decided to let go on me one cold morning while i was driving around a roundabout about 2km from home.

I've driven home from wakefield on my current re55's once when i couldn't be stuffed swapping wheels at the end of a day and they certainly weren't quiet. SP2's all round.

I don't think you could call them fantastic in the wet. I'm quicker on my street tyres around a track in the wet until there's a reasonably dry line.

levinet, I don't want to call you a liar exactly, but no way would 245 RE55s be stretched on a 9inch wide rim. most run the 235s on 9s and it's about flush. They do have about the same width as a 255 road tyre.

why are you so intent on the WT compound? I don't really know anyone running it as from memory it's the soft/motokhana compound. most people run SR2 these days.

the other thing to be aware of is on the road they will tramline quite badly. particularly if you have a 'racey' wheel alignment (ie toe out on the front, lots of castor, 3 degrees neg camber etc). when new they are 'ok' in the wet, but when worn they are pretty hairy. it will be an expnesive habbit though. I've run semis on my GTR on the road for a couple of years as I was just too lazy to bother having sets of road tyres lying around. but a few hairy moments in the wet convinced me it's worth having road tyres for the road, and track tyres for the track. just like your street tyres are no good on track, track tyres really are no good on road.

As teh Baron says running the soft compound on a GT-R in RE55's is not a good idea for circuit work. In fact I would go as far as saying you are probably better with a Toyo if you want a soft kharna tyre. I ran some 255 SR2 compounds on my R32 Gt-R on the weekend (cold, cold day at Wanneroo) & whilst they needed 1.5 laps to get warm they were fine. Unless you have alot of coin running softer than SR2 is a big call.

As for road use there is another thread of someone asking the same question. The answer was overwhelmingly don't. This is because it will variously be:

1. Expensive.

2. Noisy.

3. Tram line (y)

4. Ride badly.

5. Pick up roacks/stones from the road & fire it at your paintwork.

Thanks for all the feedback. I can get 4 Bridgestone RE01Rs for about $1200 in 255/40 from the US, so maybe that's the go. I'll wear out the R spec I've got on my 16's and maybe get a set of Rs for the 17s as and when.

It's funny as my experience on my Dunlop D01J seems to be far more positive than most are decribing in this thread. Perhaps they perform quite differently to the RE55s.

Anyhow, thanks for all your advice.
