Smaller Diameter Will Not Fill The Guards Properly?

If you've seen this question as part of another thread my apologies, but I never did get to the bottom of it.

I'm think of buying 245/40/17 or 255/40/17 for my R33 GTR rims which are going on my R32 GTR. I've had the rims on my car with 245/45 tyres, which looked a bit tall in profile but overall filled the guards nicely.

Each of the above sizes gives a smaller tyre diameter. The 245/40 is 25mm less in diameter and 255/40 is 17mm less. These seem like small amounts, but are they? Without trial fitting it's hard to know if these dimensions will make the rims and tyres look too small in the guards.

Dont go 245/40/17, stick to 245/45/17 or go 255.

Why would you want to reduce the rolling diameter for nothing by going 245/40?
