Hey all,

just before the keyboard warriors start flaming, yes I have searched.

I have just gone to hell with my car. some of you might know that I have been trying to locate my stuttering problem for some time now.

I have just recently cleaned my AAC unit. changed back to hks pod filters. new spark plugs.

when i turned the car back on after being batery-less for about a week, the car went fine for around 10mins. The only thing that was weird in its good condition was that it was booting WAY to high, way above the stock boost, and i could hear the turbos going nutz with the spooling.

after the 10mins the car turned into a wrx/boxer engine. as soon as you give it gas in any gear, it goes boxer. when it idles it idles at 1050rpm, too high. the car will rev all the way out in neutral.

There is no black/blue/white smoke coming from my exhaust pipe.

if someone/anyone could give me a run down of things to check, i would much appreciate this. thank you.

have u pulled the plugs & checked if any have started to foul?

the rev limit hasnt been set extremely low has it?

the reason for it revving in neutral i would say would be the fact that its not under any load.

so when you say it goes into boxer mode, is the thing running rough or???

I would try a compression test next to eliminate that being the problem.

boxer mode.. it runs very rough. no power. but it will rev without limitation just very roughly.

comp test, will do when i get my hands on one of those things.

ill check the plugs now. the rev limiter has never been touched, stock gtr.

i have had the injectors cleaned only 2 weeks ago.

ok i played with it again. i didnt pull the plugs out to check which one was fouling... do that tomorrow.

but when i was playing with the AFM plug the car started dying and doing what it does when im on the road in gear, wrx'ing.

The plug on the back AFM is damaged, as in where it used to have the plastic extension to bundle the wires with, that has disappeared because it has been hitting the power steering pump reservoir. Each time you touch this plug the car goes funny and idles like a 5 cyl car.

BTW it is NOT the AFM, I have eliminated this with a working set of AFM from another R32 gtr.

=)

Doesnt that tell you something?...........Youve found the problem yourself. The wiring to the AFM is dodgy and should be re-done. Of course the other AFMs will show no difference since youre only changing the meter and not the wiring. I had the same problem and bought a brand new plug from one of the sponsors on here and it fixed the problem.

you get a star next to your name! lol. nah thanks for your imput.. i sort of gathered that that could contribute to the problem, but didnt think it would be so easy to figure out. let hope that when i fix this problems will go away.

so do you remember where you bought the plug? =)

ok. im adding more to this saga.

the AFM seems to be okay after all this. check the plug wiring, checked the afm solder joints, so that part is good.

Now when I start the car it is permanently in WRX mode.

I re-checked the ignition loom and tested each cylinder for a rev drop. Number 4 seems to be the only one that doesnt respond to a rev drop. I pulled out the spark plugs and Number 4 seems to be fouling, full of black crap.

to make sure it wasnt the coil pack, i switched coil pack number 4 with coil pack number 2 and the problem still is at cylinder 4.

I checked all the wiring i could and I can only think of the ignition module.

BTW: I checked the ECU light and got an all clear from the codes.

what is going on boys and girls?!?!?!

i had the exact same problem when i changed my sparks.... the mechanic who changed them didnt clip the electrical clips properly when putting it all back together and it sounded like a rexy and used allot of fuel, poor power and the car was shaking alittle. I just upened the cover where the coilpacks sit under and checked them all. problem went away after i clipped everything properly.

that was my solution to something with the same sounding problem but yours is something alittle more harder than mine....

yeh thanks mate, it could well be the clips but ive been over those many many times. cheers.

keep em coming team!

sounds like its getting fuel but no spark.

I would reckon ignitor module related. Even if it is buggered it wont necessarily throw an ECU code.

PS have you checked compression on no 4?

yeh seems like no spark in number 4. i think it could be ignition module related as well. ah thanks for mentioning that it might not show up on the ECU codes.

I havent checked the compression of number 4. how do i get one of those done, is it pricey? would they check that on a dyno as well?

Buy a compression gauge, they arent expensive. You just crank the engine over with all plugs out and the gauge in each cylinder. One at a time of course. Should read 150-160 PSI if its pretty fresh or slightly lower if its got a few km's on it. You need to do this before anything else to rule out mechanical fault.

OMFG EVERYONE!!!!!!

THE GTR IS BACK!!!! THE POWER IS AMAZING! OMFG OMFG OMFG

I will write a post on my experience in the 1 year of no power.

THANK YOU TO ALL those patient guys/girls that gave input to the issues, your advices were well worth it and were not looked over.

A little word to tease all of you about the post i will write.... spark.

    • Haha luckily we don't have emissions, inspections, or any laws against power adders here. They only thing they somewhat keep an eye out for are ridiculously loud exhausts.
    • Just wanted to pop in an update on my setup. The CD swap has been great, I love the mazworks housing for the overall simplicity. I ended up sealing my trans tunnel with a thin sheet of aluminum reused some of the holes on the trans tunnel, and laid some window sealing EPS foam around the edges. Works great, really quieted things down and sealed up the car.  As for the power comment. Right now I am also running about 650whp. with the way the bell housing is attached to the face of the transmission I have zero doubts it would be fine, mainly because the input shaft and main shaft bearings are seated into the bell housing adapter. This means the load is NOT on the bolts to maintain the power, rather into he casing of the bell housing; Yes the bolts are doing some work there, but with both shafts locked in zero worries.  End of the day, the Mazworks solution is the easiest and safest. no need to take your trans to a shop to get milled perfectly, it fits with minimal clearancing, and you can use all your existing clutch and flywheel.  Driving wise the CD has been great compared to the big box, I'll probably swap my final drive at some point. The serial 9 shifter is gooooood, my only qualm is how tight it is, it takes a fair bit to get use to, 5th and 6th are a bit eh/hard to find at times, but maybe I need re-adjusting, and I think my clutch master is very tired and needs a rebuild.
    • If you are keen, have a look at my build thread. Car is for sale for the right money or straight swap for a F80 M3 LCI.
    • Welcome mate.  No point in over thinking it, buying any one of those cars you mentioned is not a smart or logical choice with the availability of many "better" (re price to performance) cars available to you.  The heart wants what the heart wants, buy whatever it leads you too.
    • Hey everyone! Im so grateful to be apart of this community and ill do my best to be apart of this. Firstly, i'm not disclosing my real name due to in real life circumstances surrounding my privacy and public image (sorry lol) Secondly, The only thing personal I am willing to share is that I'm from Sydney and a descendant of one of Sydneys largest mortgage firms. I got gifted my first ever car, a 2022 Porsche Cayenne and I love it to death. Ive been driving it for about 5 or 6 months now and honestly Im so grateful for my parents for gifting me this vehicle. However recently I've been working my ass off to afford my second car (which I need help deciding soooooo community help me out please?). Once decided, im planning to try modify it myself. Recent I've been thinking about getting a Skyline, particularly a 25GT or GT-V, yes I know overrated as hell, but I'm also considering a Chaser which I recently came to love. However my dream is to one day own a 180SX (So hard to find clean versions and im not really into importing).  Lastly before I send this off, I want to apologize if I sound tacky or pretentious. I try not to and want to genuinely learn from everyone and anyone. (Im no expert in this area) Thanks for reading!
