hey guys ive got a set of t517-z turbos for my 33 GTR and one of them has got a bit of shaft play happening, just wondering if any 1 could recomend a good, well priced work shop or some tips to repair it myself or if any one else has had a turbo rebuild done roughly how much it can cost.

cheers guys

Some of the T517z or T518z have the side to side movement. It might be the nature of their bush bearing since the shaft actually floats on a layer of oil during operation.

My 2x T517Z have the movement. My mate just bought a T518Z turbo kit for the honda s2k and has it as well. Both cars make good power without any problem.

We also found out that other people with the T518Z turbo in the US have the movement as well

Interestingly the other Greddy turbo don't have this issue. My T67 is rock solid :google:

Bush bearing turbos have more movement than thier ball bearing counterparts

This is because they require more oil, so when on the car, under pressure etc there is a lot of oil taking up the slack

If its only a little (few mm) of movement, id say thats perfectly normal.

They should be about the same, so if one does have significantly more than the other, then i would be getting them BOTH rebuilt at the same time.

Why rebuild if they are still potentially good. Try them on your car and see if they cause any problem.

You will only need to rebuild them if they have excessive side to side with some in and out play as well.

Both of my T517z has the normal side to side shaft play and they made healthy 400+ rwkw.

Rebuild will be expensive I would say around 1000-1200 for both.

Yeah but if one has noticeably more play than the other... then one is obviously in need of attention for whatever reason

and in which case, you would logically rebuild both.

Its like buying one second hand turbo and one brand new one... who would do that?

i hooked GCG as a TRUST approved repairer years ago as i could not get reliable repairers locally, so if you find they are shaged they will rebuild them using the correct parts.... other shops i have used in the past had fitted wheels from other turbo's etc and machined the housings to suit as they could not source the geniune wheels or housings etc.... but with the T517z's the wheels should be sweet and maybe just need cartridge change.

cool thanks for the help guys, i just checked them now as i dodnt have them with me the other day, nether have up n down play but it seems they have roughly the same side to side, so i might just try them on with the new suction kit and see how they tune up, if its a prob ill just have to get em rebuilt.
