i recently discovered a very very fast leak of coolant through a turbo coolant feed that had previously been blocked but leaking alot again.

iv topped the radiator back up from near empty, only to discover while driving that it is squealing (similar to a slipping belt)...

now...

i have noticed while driving that when im not accelerating or have the clutch presssed in, the squealing goes away. it is also louder between 80-100km.

i imagine if it was the waterpump it would constantly be squealing whether the clutch is in or my foot off the accelerator.

im thinking it could possibly be a slipping belt but its only happend since the radiator was very very low (possibly causing the waterpump to starve from any liquid) SO... i sprayed a bit of stop squeal belt conditioner on all the belts, but still does nothing to stop the squealing...

it seems its pretty obvious that the waterbump is the cause but just need to be certain that its the waterpump before i replace it.

cheers

Not much to go on here!!

The 'waterbump' [haha] turns with the motor, so it should squeal all the time. It could also be the air conditioner compressor, the alternator, or the power steering pump - if it is that type of sound.

You can usually check the water pump by getting the belt off then spinning or wriggling the pulley and looking for play etc, it will be really tight [ceased and unlikely in your case] to turn or wobbly. Usually get a fluid leak out the seals if its flogged out, thus your fluid loss.

When you topped up the fluids [and if it was that much] did you undo the air screw and bleed the air out of the system?

  • 8 months later...

hey, few days my car was making a strange squeking noise too. not laud just so u can hear it at idle, didnt think much off it must of been a belt or suem...

then my car started to leak water not alot thoe ,

but yea i thought was air con or the wiper blade resivour thing coz i was out for a bust :S again i didnt think much off it..

i got my car back yesterday coz it was impounded :( and on the free way it alomost over heated i let the car cool down and i toped it up and i got home sweet.. but im loosing water constanlty :(

i had a look from under the car and its commin from the pump,. right behind the pulley theres a little hole and its just pouring out of there every time i top up, is it as simple as the wash plug fell out or som thing serios??

thanks

    • Ah yes but were you responsible? In the time I've had it (just before Christmas) I spun off the track twice and drove into things twice, so four separate incidents.. in two outings. Luckily I have a full OEM GTR front end to put on which is hopefully not a precursor for further, future, more expensive mistakes to come. It is some consolation that anyone who would want to buy my Altia bar would have to paint it anyway, the guards, too. (if they can get over the asymmetry). Hopefully over the weekend I will disassemble and see how badly things are bent. From what it looks like, the headlight has actually just been pushed back and bent the headlight support (which .. somehow... crushed the guard in). I guess the headlight plastic is strong stuff.
    • These things happen And I believe "we, the people, who modify stuff, and actually use it, cannot have nice things" It's just a shame that it happened so soon after paint  I still win the award for quickly destroying newly painted panels I think, as my car came back from the paint shop all nice and shiny, until about 4 hours later when the boot was destroyed by a wayward locker that was blown around by the wind.... What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and poorer.....dooh
    • This. And also, the rotor thickness is constrained by the calipers. Cannot be much thicker, if at all. Cannot be much thinner, if at all. New rotors are....fairly cheap. Turbo calipers can still be picked up for sensible money. Arguably, the best thing is to get R32 calipers and put them on mount spacers on 324mm discs. That's about the cheapest and easiest way to get quite large brakes that are essentially bolt on. And that's despite maintaining for years that the R32 calipers are not the best choice because they seem to be more flexy and creaky than the others. If you were prepared to put up with nasty little NA sliding calipers, these will still seem like Brembos by comparison.
