Splitfires Or New Oem Coil Packs?

Hi, did a quick search but didn't turn up with much. I know Splitfires are the way to go if your coil packs are playing up, as genuine items are dear, but if you could purchase a new set of OEM nissan coils for simular dollars to Splitfires, which is best? Can u re-gap your plugs much the same if you were to replace with either new OEM or Splitfires?

Interested in changing mine on a '93 R32 GTR

The only real reason everyone gets after market coils is because of the ridiculous price for OEM items.

My OEM coils lasted well over 16+years until they started to break down

So, in performance terms there is no advantage other than pricing to go for Splitfires?

BTW, seen a set of new OEM coil packs advertised for $660AUD delivered. Yes, dearer than Splitfires but not by that much, and you know they will last!

Hey, thanks mate. Interesting but they are compairing their new coils to 'old' nissan items. Wonder if any difference compaired to a new set of OEM coil packs?

the new Australian developed Superspark coilpacks have been proven to make a 14KW gain over standard coilpacks on an RB25 motor.

which of course we can get you a set

Testing on the Splitfires by UAS for Autosalon magazine showed NO gain in performance over standard coils.

Are you refering to the HPI magazine test of the supersparks?

Just make sure you get GENUINE Splitfires!

There are two versions out there, both look pretty similar.

One splitfire is equivalent to Super Spark Stuff and is priced accordingly. (not saying they're bad, you just pay for what you get).

The other is from "LynxCorp" the only (REGISTERED) Splitfire Coil Distributor in Australia. They sell GENUINE ones.

They're not too bad from memory (price wise). Look 'em up.

looks like it will take some convincing before super sparks are taken seriously.

I will have a discussion with Super Spark and Competition Tuning and Performance and do up another independent test run and report the findings.

I have read of a few instances of splitfires being bad, either out of the box, or within a short life span, so don't think I am being negative against one or the other. I just believe that the test of the superspark coils in that magazine was bogus. If the stock coils were breaking down, then it stands to reason that installing new units picked up power that was lost.. but I would have liked to have seen the difference between stock oem good coils and aftermarket. It was as if they installed a known bad set of coils to inflate the test results, and thats bad form.

If my oem coils start breaking down when the car gets tuned next (which could be very possible as they are siliconed up atm), I will be looking around at the options, splitfire, superspark and jjr. Decision will be based on 3rd hand information as always, but will be influenced by reliability, price, and availability.

Splitfire are a known quantity, with a few exceptions. JJR are cheap, with a very small installed user base, but not having negative yet. Superspark are an unknown for the same price as splitfire. We (customers) have to be given a positive reason to purchase, especially to move away from something that is recommended, as evidenced by the many posts people (fanboys) make when anything ignition related pops up and you get random post about 'just buy a set of splitfires'.

^ if superspark were priced more reasonably i'd definately consider them but at the same/similar price as splitfires, i know which set ill buy.

edit: i just checked out kudos sale thread, theres none for s2 r33 and r34 anywya..

looks like i have to get splitfires definately.
