Test drive the type R dude. They kick ass. Insurance may be harsh on all the cars people have listed. When you say you've worked for your $40K at 17 years old, do you mean worked selling drugs by any chance?

If you don't like the current type R, find a mint 2000 model.

Golf GTi is really tempting, but looks like these days every man and his dog owns one...

hmm.. probably need to go for R32 Golf but yikes their prices are way too expensive...

Was actually considering to go the Cooper S path, lightweight and chuckable chasis is a sure way of a fun car.

JCI quote was around the $950 for comprehensive rating 1... so if you're still rating 6, insurance is probably gonna cost a bit... unless you're comfy with 3rd party only.
