Hi All,

I have just imported an R34 GTR from Japan (personal import organised by a dealership/importer).

Just wanted to share the fun I've had with dealing with the RTA...

Got my Blue slip, Green slip and required doco and headed off to the RTA to get my car registered, happy thoughts about being able to drive my car shortly in my head...

Lady at the RTA tells me that I need to get a VIIU inspection done. She says that "All imports" have to have this done.

Booked me in for the 22nd August, which is not too bad I guess.

So I ask, can I have temporary registration so that I can drive the car until I get it inspected?

RTA: no, under no circumstances can an imported vehicle that has not previously been registered in NSW be given a temporary rego.

Can I get a permit to drive the car home (still at the the place that imported it for me) so I can then take it to the RTA inspection the next morning?

RTA: No, not for an Import under any circumstances.

So I can drive the car, but only to the inspection place, and then either back to the importer or home after that. But the thing is, even though I have paid for my Greenslip in order to get the rego, as I understand it the car will not be insured because it is not registered?

So whilst I may be able to drive to the VIIU appointment, I believe I would do so at my own risk, and if involved in an accident would find myself uninsured??

Could get it put on a truck and taken there, but again, it's not insured, so if they damage it, then tough luck as well??

Any thoughts, experiences and suggestions about this??

Basically, even though I have followed all the legal steps and done everything properly to import the car and get compliance, it seems the RTA still want to stuff me around and make importing a car as painful a process as possible.

Check with a different branch. Sounds silly but have done it a couple of times now and i get different responses at different branches.

My understanding is that a temp rego is available for all cars, imports or not. See the link, no mention of imports being excluded.

Thanks for the advice. You are correct, it does not state anything about imports being excluded. Sadly it doesn't say anything about them being them specifically being allowed either.

But surely if people with Race or Rally cars can apply for one of these, why wouldn't I be able to apply for one with a valid compliance Blue Slip? The Blue Slip is surely at least the "Road Worthiness Declaration" they mention?

Seems it depends who you speak to at the RTA... I actually just rang the general enquiries line. Interesting that the lady was so adamant that imports could not be allowed. A change in their process to yet again try and screw over the import owner/driver, or just my bad luck??

Anyway, will try at an actual RTA office and see how I get on...

Yes, to both those questions MX :-)

Further update: spoke to someone else at the RTA, this time in the department that deals with Unregistered Vehicles. She told me I can legally drive the car home from the workshop and then to the inspection from home all as part of the "Allowed to drive relating to getting the vehicle registered" rule...

So anyway, will see how it all goes!

Wish me luck! :P

1 question, which RTA did you go to?

yes the vehicle identity check is a pain in the butt. generally if you are nice, and the next inspection appointment is over 2 weeks away they will grant you an interim label. but since your appointment is only 8 days away it's unlikely they will, and you have to pay for it anyway. as for interim lables not being granted to imports, well I can't speak for right now (only the RTA can answer) but I can say that they have been in the past. but to be honest they try to issue them as little as possible, so generally you need to be super nice, and have some kind of reason for needing to drive the car to even have a chance of getting one.

Went to the Wynyard RTA...

And I was nice to them... very restrained as I usually am, but still they just reckoned it wasn't allowed for imports.

Anyway, doesn't matter now. Will just drive it home from the workshop, then to the inspection the next morning and should be fine (I hope!). :P

Good stuff, Keep your paperwork with you in the car incase you get pulled over. Just a bit of back up incase they think your just some punk driving an unregistered car :-)

Funnily, when i was doing this with my V35, I was in peak hour traffic and passed about 5 cops, and had no plates, and other than check out the car and smile, not one questioned why the car was being driven with no plates.

Yes, to both those questions MX :-)

Great stuff :P

Jo told me a lot about that car even before it landed and judging by what she told me, she wasnt far off. That car is mint! So congrats on your new GTR.

My one which is practically identical to yours besides the LMGT4's, has just been complied and hopefully should get it on Saturday, if not early next week.

Hope to see you out on the street!

Thanks NISMO, will keep the docos with me, don't worry about that! Hopefully I have the same sort of happy smiley Police around when I drive! :(

MX - Awesome mate :P Yes, the car seems to be in fantastic condition, and I can't wait to actually be able to drive it legally, where I want! LOL.

Good luck with yours too, will have to check it out when it arrives! :D

oh great, knowing my chances this is going to happen to me too for sure lol

Oh yeah, count on it. Just hope they have a free spot in the inspection schedule which is not 3 weeks away.

My second time around i actually tried to book it in advance, and was told "we don't know if your car will be randomly chosen". I asked the girlf if she wanted to bet a lazy $100 on it and she just smiled. :D

My first suggestion would be don't go to the Wynyard RTA! The lady I dealt with there said that all imports have to have the VIIU done. I know they told me a load of crap about a lot of things, but if the people behind the desk there believe it should be done on all of them, then there's not much chance of not getting forced to get one!

Good luck and may you not get selected! :D

It's a bummer that you have to wait so long to get your car inspected. Well my one got registered today and thankfully, I dont have to go through that shit, otherwise it wouldve pissed me off badly as well.

Pm me when you get yours on the road and we'll meetup for sure. Im in the Hornsby area.

cheers

Hey you're one step ahead of me, so I have to ask .. do you know if the inspection process

also verifies the car is stock (as in, aussie tires and stock exhaust) or is just to inspect for matching

numbers and paperwork.

The reason I ask is I don't know whether to get the compliance shop to put back on the nismo exhaust

and anything else they removed in complying, before I go through this RTA process, or tell them to

keep everything on and ship me the JDM bits so I can add them later.

Obviously least hassle = former .. if they are just inspecting to match numbers I don't think they'd

recognize a slightly non stock car?

Hey mate.

Not sure exactly what else they check other than the plate numbers matching etc. Took them 40 minutes. I think they might go over it to make sure it hasn't been in an accident and that it is structurally sound.

My car came from Japan and I had put back on, after compliance - Nismo LM GT4 rims and an aftermarket (but very quiet) Fujitsubo exhaust. The workshop did put in the standard airbox (car came with pods) just in case.

Mine passed without a problem, but with only those 2 aftermarket parts, so can't really comment on if they would notice or try to reject yours for any other aftermarket parts...

Cheers.

same rims and weldina exhaust is all i want to have on too, so thats great .. I'll give it a go.. perfect thanks.

..at a wild guess the tires definitely have to be oz purchased ones at inspection..

    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all! • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.
    • Hope the cans went down well at least
    • 255 can't go wrong with the price.
    • When I was replacing my pump due to being stranded in the wrong state, I went with the Deatschwerks 320lph kit. It is a direct plug in to the stock wires, harness, everything. It comes with a plug... but you can plug the OEM plug directly into this thing. https://justjap.com/products/deatschwerks-dw300-fuel-pump-nissan-s13-silvia-r32-r33-r34-skyline-c34-stagea?currency=AUD Downside: Won't actually flow that much on boost if you want to push it on E85, but it's comparable to the 040/255 etc. Little more actually.
