My sump was finished today, motor is ready to go on Friday - thats one more white r32 out there on the roads :D

What happened to your 1st RB30 combo? Wasn't it just finished earlier this year?

A little update... My head is finished (have pics coming) and apparently looks so good it's a shame that it has to go back in! It will all be assembled and ready to go so the engine will be back to my mechanic on Monday.

Yay everyone cross their fingers for me getting my car back in just over a week!!!!

Autotech don't do dyno run ins anymore and I'm happy to have the car and do it myself.

His words... "ive been told to use cheap mineral oil and take it up the mountain and load it not reving past 5000 rpm and also not to baby it"

Dunno about cheap oil, I'm not the one putting that in... But this is pretty similat to what I've been told. That I can flog it but only really up to 5k.

Like everything there's 1000 different ways to do things so I don't really care what it says on the internet, I'm doing what my mechanic and engine builder recommend since something gives me the impression they may have been through this a few times.

Good to see things are moving quickly for you! Maybe you'll have it all run in and tuned in time for the Supra Club dyno in (this hasn't been confimed yet, of course) mid January? You can come and show what a GTR is capable of :)

By then I'll already know what she's pulling on the dyno so might go out for a look but wouldn't bother to enter. It'll be quick and fun to drive but I didn't build it to be a dyno queen.

Hehe most of us don't build them to be dyno queens.. but a daily driver that makes anything upward of 400 kW at the wheels is always nice to see at a dyno day. And without being a arsehole, you'd have to bring a bit more than 400 to a Supra Club dyno day :)

Hopefully we can organise a track day with both clubs and test these bad boys out!

As my thread says the whole way through I'm not looking at anywhere near that much power. No point competing with guys that have swapped out their twins for big singles.

I'm much more interested in a track day. In my opinion dynos are only good for tuning a car, they're no indication of what the car can do on a road. I only went to the last day so I had a before figure at all four wheels for my engine rebuild.

Is Ed going to check the tune and afr's etc before you take it, especially since it's now a 2.8? A bit of dyno time also helps to check for leaks after a brand new install too, often happens no matter how careful you are.

Late pm or early am is good so you're not sitting in traffic, and can drive it the way you need to. Bateman's and back is a good varied run.

Re mineral oil for the run in, most is too heavy for RBs (Nissan rec 7.5W) and the special run-in stuff is about 25W. Turbo seals don't like that. Closest I could find was Penrite 10W-30 mineral and that showed high but still OK pressure on my mechanical gauge.

You've probabably already thought of all this, of course definately go with what Ed and Greg say, just my 2c.

Cheers and good luck!

He most certainly is

Shit time of year for a coast run too with school hols and what not but probably an early morning run is what I am after but see how I go.

I have no idea what oil they're putting in I just know that it's different and needs to be changed after the run in - leaving that all up to the boys to handle.

Cheers for all that!

Man I just want it back!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I know what you said, but you wouldn't be the first to get a taste of more power and start looking for more and more

While dynos are *meant* to be a tuning tool, they can give you a pretty good indication of the way turbos respond, and how much power & where it makes it that your driveline combination is capable of. Turning that into performance on the street, track or dragstrip is the trickier part.. but a car that makes good power on the dyno *should* still be a fast/quick car.

I do know what you're talking about... and no matter what your dyno sheet says, it means nothing real-world unless you have the track times or E.T.s to back them up. Hence my keenness to get on the track :D

i know it sounds crazy to use cheaper oil, but it is important, my engine has also just been rebuilt. the reason for this is that for the first couple of days the piston rings need to bed them selves in, this is almost imposable to do on good oil especially if its full synthetic. you need to get the piston rings to wear in, once this is done you can go to a half synthetic for the first 1000ks and after that you should be OK to go a good full synthetic.

hope this helps

and all the best with the rebuild

    • Not yet, might end up being easter now, didn't end up getting time off over xmas.    I've been seeing some concerning things online now too. Lots of people with issues, could all be setup issues but the consequences in some cases are significant.    All of the below are other peoples stories, not mine and are unverified.  Seen 2 x broken adapter ring that destroyed the gearbox as it failed.   They still do seem to have twin plate rattle despite claims of silent. Several issues with it not holding power but some evidence of constant pressure on plate. Setup issues with bite point.   Lot of people after 2-4 weeks swapping back to another brand.    On the positive side, I've seen a barra put down near 1000hp at the wheels and its held it.  Also everyone seems to confirm the pedal is light.    Does have me a little cautious and looking at ATS carbon clutches again .......
    • I'm late to the party on this one but good to see common sense has prevailed and the turbo kit is coming.
    • She's looking good Greg. Colour suits it perfectly 👍
    • I had a look at the FAB9 EFR kit, around $8500 AU before delivery, so add in shipping, installation, consumables and tuning, I believe the price difference would be negligible  And whilst I am paying top dollar at MX5 Mania, if I have any issues with the kit they are local for support,  and from my experience, will happily go out of their way to help, hell, I've purchased parts from them and asked "how do I install or remove parts" and they have fitted a few of them for free, this means more to me than saving a few thousand dollars And yes, 99% of the time I just plod around in the car, that may change once I start hearing turbo whooshy noises, but, as I have 3 family members is the constabulary, even when I'm up it, it is only up to the speed limit, or occasionally, but rarely, overtaking on the Hwy (I just plod in the left lane typically and enjoy the drive) Plus the kids would never let it go if I got booked speeding, Jackie is constantly getting critiqued by the kids about her driving, which I think is hilarious, and tell them that she is "bringing shame to our family", so heaven forbid if I ever got done speeding, after all my mouthing off about her driving, I would never live it down, and it would be another thing she would bring up any chance she got Like the time I got drunk about 15 years ago and fell out of a cab, which gets brought up at least a few times every year since it happened Good times
