hello everyone. i've recently bought an 89 gtr and have been working on fixing a few problems the last owners ignored. i had suspicions that the timing was not right so i hooked up a timing light and with the cas all the way clock wise it was sitting at 25 btdc. i've read on here that the cas bolts should be roughly in the mniddle of the slots so i figured something had to be really wrong. i took off the cas and the half moon key thats on the cam shaft is broken off and just sitting in the cas. the splines are fine so once on it won't wiggle about or anything but i have no way of knowing for sure if its set on the cam right. unless i used trial and error and just keep repositioning it and then timing it and seeing if i can get it on the right way. is the gear for the cas a part of the camshaft or is it something that can be replaced without having to replace a cam? any advice?

(as stated numerous times previously) You should be able to see the rough section in the cam where the key used to be. Some visualisation will let you align the CAS correctly.

If the CAS is even 1 tooth out of alignment, the engine will not start and run.

You should also note, as stated numerous times previously, that some timing lights give an incorrect timing indication (usually double the "real" timing).
