So, I've been out of bikes for a long time (10ish years, since school... oh god I'm getting old :P) and the other day I went out and bought myself one of these -

Cannondale F6 hardtail.

Same colour as the one in the picture, except mine's got V-brakes instead of cable discs. Could have had it in red but my car's red so I wanted something different :)

Picked it up for $750, but have had the bike shop retrofit a lockout on the front suspension and changed the tyres to something slightly better for the road. The idea is to use the bike for riding to work and also for some light trail work out in the forest, hance why I got a mountain bike instead of a road bike.

I don't really know that I've gotten a good bike for what I paid so any feedback by those more knowledgeable would be good :)

I test rode this one and a $1,000 Avanti and chose the Cannondale because it felt lighter and came with a 15-year frame warranty as opposed to a 5-year warranty with the Avanti. They felt pretty much the same to ride. The Avanti had a bit better brakes but that's about all I could distinguish.

to be honest, frame warranties aren't worth looking at. as long as it is at least 12 months you will be fine. they are only for manufacturer defects which should either be picked up before it leaves the shop or within the first few rides. also cannondale are pretty shocking when it comes to warranty claims. because they have such a reputable name, they don't give a shit about warranty because they know that no matter how shit their service is people will still buy their bikes.

the same goes for their pricing. sure they are good bikes, but they charge you top dollar. $750 isn't a bad price though. that is partly because (i'm 99% sure) the F6 is an 08 model not an 09 (don't think they did it this year) so it hasn't been subject to price rises like the 09 stuff. so compared to 09 stock it is well priced, but compared to other 08 stock (when both at RRP) it lacks behind a bit in the quality of components

yea price for that is fine in this day n age - besides truth be told for what a bike does - which is... commute and get you fit and burn fat... in my eyes there really is no "expensive" and "cheap"

you get what you pay for, you want cable discs? pay for them, hyrdo discs? pay for them too, remote lockout? pay for it

now THEY are a waste of money.

Because it will break sooner, because they used cheaper parts, therefore keeping marc in business.

OR

It will be just as good, because you aren't paying for Lance Armstrongs prosthetic testicle via sponsorship money.

if they are the same spec (meaning same model gears, etc) then the extra money is simply going into someones pocket other than your own.

that is why when someone says that a certain brand bikes are shit, it is pretty stupid, especially in the higher end stuff where they will all be pretty much running the same gear (including frames).

im just wondering if any of you know the maximum tyre width that can be used on a

2006 Apollo Altitude XC ??

Because im looking at getting these 2.5inch wide Maxxis Hookworm street tyres

i have 1.95's on it now and about 5cm on either side of the tyre before it reaches the frame.

you MAY fit 2.5's on, but there is a very good chance they will rub the frame, and if you ever get the slightest buckle they will rub. also i think you might be a bit off with your 5cm each side of the current tyre as your current tyre will only be 5cm wide so you are saying that you have the same size gap on each side of your tyre as the width of your tyre.

and i just measured up a 2009 altitude and it would come pretty close to scrubbing both sides.

but why do you want such fat tyres? they will make you roll much slower than what you currently have. if you are only riding on the road look at either the ones rowan linked or something like the michelin XC or XCR road tyres (pretty much the same as the maxxis ones rowan linked) or the new michelin city if you want something a bit wider in a slick. or look at some of the touring tyres from conti.

i was just estimating with the 5cm, i havnt had the chance to ride my bike in ages

i wanted them because my mate had them on his 06 GT Chucker 2.0 and they were heaps good,

last really long, we were like going flat out, locking on the rears and doin 20 metre fishies and the tyre would barely loose any rubber. My tyres on the other hand last about 10 good skids before i pop them, which sucks.

But its not all about skids

the main thing is the wear factor

i want it to take the abuse that i dish out (on road, off road, tricks, skids)

but still last for a while

ill have a look at both of them next time i go down to the bike shop
