tsk, i need crank recommendations... my shitmano xt wouldn't stay on anymore. Or does anyone still have those old isis truvativ holzfeller cranks lying around in their garage willing to sell? I loved how those cranks were.

i am assuming you have octalink cranks at the moment and not old XT that is square taper? also what gearing are you running? triple, double or single? also shimano octalink and isis drive spindles are different so you can't just swap the cranks over.

I know, i'm actually using the Hollowtech II cranks.

And i'm running on my granny ring.. 26t, and running a 13 or 15t cog a the back.. its currently now a 13t becaue i cbf adding a link back onto my chain.

so you are only running it as a sinlge speed? why not change to a set of bmx cranks? much stronger. i may be able to hook you up with a set of old cranks and a 25t sprocket. all you would need to do is buy a bearing set for about $50

ok, had a quick look at what i have in old stuff. got 1 set of bmx cranks but not really ideal as they have a 22mm spindle so since you are running it with a euro BB set it will destroy bearings pretty quick. the downside to running a bmx crank is that you can't keep the external bb shell which gives you better bearing life. but going to a bmx crank you are getting a much stronger crank and the weight difference isn't that much. if you are worried about it you could always put a titanium spindle in it. and bmx cranks are cheaper than mtb cranks. i looked up the price of a set of xt cranks before and the wholesale price on them is about the retail price on a good set of bmx cranks. and then once you take into account the cost of a sprocket and bb set the bmx cranks would still be cheaper and stronger.

On my SS I have an Octalink 2 BB and these old dura ace cranks mated to a surly chainring, both off ebay.

You can mix and match and do whatever you want to a SS.

i'm not a big fan of profile cranks. sure they are good, but there is other stuff just as good, if not better at the same price. i'd be going something like the colony colonial cranks.

as for fitting them. it's not harder than fitting shimano cranks really. you install one side of the bearings, slide the spindle through a bit, slide in the spacer then install the second bearing cup, then just plap around with the spacers until you get the right chainline and the right amount of spacers to have the second arm sit properly and have both arms clear the frame.

Question, Have you ever landed a jump so hard that you've snapped your bike frame? or any other bike part for that matter?

I want a Cannondale Capo... $1750 one, the one with the Purple grips on the handle bars... MREPS put it up, where is santa when you most need him?

macdog - that bike is not worth $1750. if a shop is quoting $1750 for that bike you're describing they're having a lend of you.

it's worth $1,100 MAX.

results of my 53km bikerace. i am a retard.

the night before i decided to fully degrease and dry out my entire bike chain,. then re-lube it.

at the start line i noticed my back wheel wasn't sitting right - lube had got into the axle and slid one side of the wheel over. race started - by brakes were scrubbing the back wheel. had to pull over and re-adjust my brakes, this did nothing. so i hit the wheel back to somewhat straight.sliding the other side of the wheel over - causing chain sag..

chain sag and over lubed chain means chain comes off easilly.. so i lost about 5 mins pulled over with my brakes. chain came off 5 times... and i had to ride a bit slower so as not to hav the chain demount.. so in total i would've lost about 20 mins of my possible time - but - that's riding what can ya do

i finished in the 25th percentile of riders with an average speed of 28.9 km/h

very dissappointed witht he overall goings on ie - bike breaking down majorly.. but.. givent he circumstances.. to finish in the top quarter of riders i really can't complain..

EDIT - looks at BIT_SUSS's rides... my money's on NO. haha

Are there any bikes with gears that would suite a 6 yr old ?

I road cycle and want my son to get into it, as he loves riding his little bmx.

But with no gears getting up hills is too hard for him.

you can get 20" mtb's that have 6 or 7 gears. whatever you do don't get a 20" with a triple chainring crankset. they don't have long enough chain stays to properly run a triple chainring set so you end up with plenty of chain issues.

you can also get 24" road bikes, but he wouldn't be big enough to ride one at 6. he would only just fit onto a 20" mtb at 6 unless he is very tall.

nah they are no worse than mtb's for knee injury. and gearing is moderate. not too easy but not too hard. i have crappy knees and i had no issues racing my 20". but you could always go a 24" if you are worried about it.

i'm actually running 24in now!

i cbf with getting a whole new setup. I'm saving for a car as it is now. So no bmxs, i dont think i'll want to spend another 800 to 1000 on another bike.
