Hi Guys,

On Saturday night my car was driving perfectly. Then all of a sudden when i was taking off from a set of lights at about 2500rpm the engine just cut and died for a second. I back off and it tried accelerating again and at the same point it died. So i just babied it to about 2.5k and then changed to second and tried accelerating normally again. Same thing. Then it went away and all was good. So all up this was about a minute of playing up and then the problem seemed to dissapear. I drove my car home with no problems from my friends house that night as well with no problem.

Yesterday i drove from Campbelltown all the way to Wollongong with no problem. I then decided to go further south just for the sake of going for a drive. All of a sudden the car did the same thing. I babied it into second hoping it would go away again and it didn't. Got it to a servo to so i could see if there was anything wrong.

I thought it could be a bad batch of fuel but when i called NRMA they said i would have noticed it straight away. I filled up in the middle of the week. I thought then that the plugs could be fouling but they haven't even done 500km's. I also changed the coil packs under 1000km's ago. When it happens there is a miss on idle and the revs go up really roughly up until 2500 where the engine just doesn't want to rev.

Also when i got towed home and got the car off the truck it seemed fine again.

Does anyone know what this could be or have any suggestions.

Also when i mention accelerating off from the lights and accelerating in general, it's normal driving and not trying to launch from the limiter accelerating.

Yeah that could be one possibility. When i disconnected the afms the idle dropped and wanted to stall so i assume that it it's working properly at idle atleast. maybe at higher revs the sensor is stuffing up sometimes.

Could it be something as simple as the fuel filter??? Maybe fuel pump??

Sounds electronic...

Sensor, AFM or ECU? A fault in the ECU gives off the same intermittent probs

Can you do a swap just to see?

It gets so frustrating if a problem is intermittent eh?

I hope it's not the ecu because i don't really want an aftermarket one yet. Hell i hope it's not the afm's either because i don't wanna get new ones of those.

I'll try reset the ECU and hope it doesn't happen again. If it does i might try swap the AFM's i guess.

But yeah because it's intermittent it really is annoying. knowing my luck when i go to the mechanics it will be fine and won't stuff up until i'm almost home.

you know what? mine doing the same thing. sometimes it will cut out for a second, other time it will be more. sometimes i have to switch the car off and on again...

but im gonna try AFM's, i might get a pair of Z32's :rofl:

could be AFM related. 2500rpm sounds like safe mode. you can initiate safe mode by disconnecting your AFM and it wont go past 2500rpm and run like sh*t.

I havent come across a bad AFM but I did resolder my afm joints just to be safe.

Definately Electrical from the sounds of it. if you read my post about stuttering you'll see how frustrated i got when i found my answer.

I started it this morning because i needed to get to the shops and it was running rough but for some reason i could rev it over 2500rpm but it would be missing bad and be rough as guts. I'll try re-solder the afm's and maybe try clean them with some carby cleaner or something on the weekend.

THANK GOD! someone who has the same problem. Somedays shes ok and some shes just decides to randomly die on me, its starting to get dangerous, as im entering into a corner shell just dust die, and the steering wheel will lock up, i then have to clutch down and turn over the ignition.

I'm pretty sure its an electrical problem, i dont think it could be my sparks because then my revs would be acting abnormal.

Theres no signs of it going to die or anything, it just happens randomly while driving normaly, everything is pretty much smooth then out of no where shell just die and roll along.

My car is an R33 GTSt series 1, and is pretty much stock, the only mods that im aware of are a bov and a pod filter.

I thought the culprit was a dirty afm, so i decided to clean it the other day with some electrical cleaner. But the problem still occurs. I was thinking, if it was my afm then i probally couldnt go above 2.5k rpm because its dead, however lately i cant feel the turbo pull as much either that or im just too use to the feeling. Ill check the sparks tommorow to see if there fouled, i just hope its not my coils.

Please reply and update on the problem id love to know what the solution is before i start replacing parts that dont need to be.

I also came across the above post which i think i might try, if the problem is my afm i mean it wont hurt to give it a go, because ill have to end up replacing it anyway.

edit - i also just remembered that when i step on the acelerator to about 5k shell die after so it could be the afm after all.

ok today while my car was idling i pulled out the afm plug and my car just spluttered and cut out, so the afm is obviously doing its job, just to make sure i started the engine without the afm plugged in and it started but my revs wer all rough and jumpy, i then plugged the afm back in and the revs went back to normal.

I still havnt had the time to check my sparks and coils, but im pretty sure their not the culprit, after surfing and browsing the net i figured its probally my blow off valve, so now i plan to remove my bov and put a stock one back on.

I then went out and looked at my engine and was like wtf :D i have 2 blow of valves, the stocky and the aftermarket blitz, the aftermarket blow off valave was fitted onto the top pipe for the stock side intercooler, so im guessing the piping is aftermarket too. so now my choices are.. if it is because i have 2 blow off valves, i have too remove one, which will probaly be the aftermarket one and get a new stock intercooler pipe or if its my stock bov thats causing the problem ill just remove it and block the hole some how :(

First ill try source a stock intercooler pipe and remove my aftermarket bov, to see if that was the problem.

ill update when i install everyhting.

I have exactly the same problem lucky i have a good warranty but i took it to the auto electrican in slacks creek called dj auto he took it for a drive then plugged a diagnostic into the ecu to find the problem guess what the AFM code came up straight away... he took the code off the ecu and then drove it gagain later that day no AFM code so he decided the afm was probably failing very intermitently and said trying all AFM test will not work as it will work fine for a while then randomly die and then be fine again... he said to driv ethe car for 2days and see if it re appears and guess what it drove perfect til tonight when it decided it has had enough again and started to dir... he did prepare me for this problema and said if it the code doesnt stay away u will need a new AFM

Sigh, im now thinking off doing it, and i mean if worst comes to worst ill just buy a new afm and reset my ecu.

I checked my ECU code and got 55 which is all ok. My battery is dead now from not driving it in ages so i can't try and start it anyway and see if it will run.

Might try something this weekend if i get time like opening up the afms and re soldering the joints.

yeh i tried cleaning it, but it still died randomly, it pretty much happens when i give the car abit, usually after the bov flutter and the suction from the air filter letting go, so i think ill do the soldering and still remove the aftermarket bov.

so whats the process of taking the aftermarket bov off? do i have to replace that pipe that its on? or is that the stock pipe?
