Was sitting at the lights today and sudenly noticed a fairly large cloud of blue smoke coming up behind the car, well past the spoiler...

This is the first time its happened, cant reproduce it again. Also there is some oil on the no 5 spark plug every time its been changed.

Car is 32GTR. Engine has been built, pistons are tomei, clearances are 2 thou. Head has been recondisioned and has JUN bronze valve guides and new nissan valve stem seals. Turbos are stock that have been rebuilt with steel wheels and new seals by Slide. The whole package has done 11000K's so far and is running on Motul Chrono V 10w40 oil.

Compression has been done and was 175psi in all cylinders except 5 which had 180psi (and a bit of oil on the plug)

Ideas of what it can be?

oil in your exhuast from turbo seal? but I geuss then it would happen ever time it's hot..... dunno but I wanna know what the go is with the oil on the plug i get that sometimes.

is it using oil??as in low in the sump?

Is the oil on the electrode of the spark plug or the ceramic?

Oil on the electrode side of the spark plug and blowing blue (oil) smoke would indicate to me that your valve stem seals are leaking. If your compression is fine then it won't be rings.

Does it blow blue smoke when you first start it? The metal valve stem seals would expand slightly when it heats up with engine temperature which, in theory, should mean it would leak more on cold start, then when the engine is at operating temperature

agreed, where is the oil on the plug, this is true most engines wont blow smoke when at NOT,more info plz

The oil has to be getting into the cylinder from somewhere then. If its isolated to a single cylinder, that means it wouldnt be from the turbos because then it would go into all 6 cylinders and there would be oil on all the plugs. Seeing as how you have had the valve stem seals replaced thats the first place Id be checking... How much smoke is coming out and how closelely can you monitor the oil level... like if it only slightly drops over a few days it might be cheaper to just live with it and check your oil regularly

my bad,slow on the reply,

i see oil on the thread of the plug on plenty of cars,at least 1 a day, culd be oil leaking from rocker seals,it doesnt normally come from the chamber, oil in the chamber normally ends up in the exhaust,id be inclined to agree with the valve stem seal comment, check them, could be leaking which is why you may have gotten the slightly higher comp reading on 5,

Id just be monitoring the oil level and how much its blowing when you start it first thing in the morning... just MAKE SURE you check the oil level regularly, the last thing anyone wants is a GTR with a popped engine, as Ive just experienced, even parts are expensive and if you're not a mechanic, the labour charge would be painful

Best of luck with it

head off thats a start lol

srry but im agreeing with andy on this, monitor it every day, when it starts consuming a lot of oil ie it burns 1/2 to a full litre in say a wk then id worry bout pullin the head off,i suggest you start saving some money...the heads comin off at some point...

To replace valve stem seals...

exhaust and inlet manifolds off, which means turbos off, from my experience it would have to be near impossible to get the inlet manifold off with the engine in the car, possibly new head bolts depending if the ones used are stretch bolts, then getting the old seals out, the price of new seals, and then the reassembly. depending on labour rates, parts availability, and condition of everything else internally... could be a costly fix

Hence the reason I'd be recommending to monitor the engine oil every few days.

Or you could join the ever expanding club of GTR owners who spend all their money on their cars and get the head port matched to the manifold while everything is off the car

As usual its a case of how big your wallet is

Thats a bit annoying as I just paid someone a fair chunk of money to recon the head while everything was apart.... may have to have a chat to them

could be worth a chat,it all depends on if they have warranty on the work they performed, otherwise your pretty much up that creek,

    • A locally delivered Infiniti have remote start installed but don't come with the remote start key. You need a new remote start key and they just need it programed. And this is different to making/programing a new key that just starts the car.
    • Cheers, and cheers for sharing so much of the build and also sharing the glimpse of what turns out to bring a lot of us poor decision makers together haha.  I do recommend learning more about how to manage it, if not considering getting a  formal diagnosis.  The discussion with the psychiatrist I got my diagnosis through was quite eye opening, things I'd not even considered to be ADHD related and hadn't mentioned were things she asked about out of the blue and were common themes with people with my flavour of ADHD.   It's not a label for people who are hyperactive and ill-attentive, there's more to it than that and some of it can be much more challenging or damaging - though there are of course two sides to the thing, and a lot of the stuff we have to go through and work on to live with it make us effectively "better" at other things as well. Aside from the fact that there is some argument I could have a bit of ASD seasoning in there (came up during the diagnosis, and neurodiverse things seem to not stay as a cookie cut) I suspect you need to learn more about ADHD if you are puzzled about how hyperfocus could possibly apply.  I *do* personally use "superpower" with quotes deliberately, but it's 100% an ADHD thing due to the exact reason that lack of focus is also an ADHD thing... Loosely speaking the inattentive side of ADHD isn't the inability to focus, it's the inability to control where the focus goes.  Not being able to sleep because brain is more interested in thinking about a stupid thing I said to a girl I liked 30 years ago, not being able to focus on work because my brain is more keen on putting together the torque management strategy we're going to try out with a drag car next weekend, not being able to focus on a conversation with someone I WANT to listen to and respect because there is a flickering light in my peripheral vision.    If I could just stop work and build the torque management setup right there and then I'd not hear anything else until it was done.
    • Maybe you should do some more reading.  Google positive effects of ADHD and you'll get your answers.  One of my personal downsides of ADHD has been talking before I think.   Maybe you have it too?
    • Excuse me for butting in....but which part of ADHD can be considered a superpower? I would have though it far more likely that some ASD comorbidity is more likely to be contributing to an ability to hyperfocus on something. ADHD being aimed somewhat in the other direction. My shed looks like your shed. My whiteboard list of unfinished projects has entries going back 15 years. I know what you're talking about - I just struggle to connect ADHD to the results being discussed.
    • Thanks for reaching out!  It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I'm undiagnosed but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it in me... I have more half started projects laying around my house, shed, garden, etc taking up space and money, destroying aesthetics than if I added up all of my mates projects together. But, ADHD gives me the ability to hyper focus on things that no mere mortal could even  comprehend.  A recent pool build is an example of that....  I dont know anyone else that would be dumb enough and focused enough to take on then complete something of that magnitude. I call ADHD a superpower but it can equally be completely destructive if not controlled and focusedon the right places. Addiction is a major concern to ADHD people and thankfully my addictions have been no worse than projects, XBOX, chocolate and being an arsehole! It's often hereditary and my 13 year old son is currently learning how to drive it at the moment. Keep lurking! If i can finally finish this bloody thing at some point it will be a win for all of us ADHD'ers! 🤪
