P-plate Laws

Hey there.

Does anyone have a link or information regarding modifications for P-Platers? I'm talking about for e.g. Pod filters, pulley kits, radiators etc.

What is accepted/legal for P-platers? And are there any ways to get around these?

Hope some can help me out :D

I didn't know such laws exist...

As far as I'm aware, there are no special rules or excemptions for P platers when it comes to mods, it's across the board...

I've only been full licensed for 8 hours, but I could be wrong :D

im a green p but i got my p's before the bullcrap laws anyway so im not affected and can cruise in a petrol guzzler Turbo.......

if you want to get into the nitty gritty any modification thats not standard on the car is a defectable offence. If you fall under the new p plate laws a highway patrol will check the cars owner history before the siren even comes on for the owner of the car, has it been defected before, does the owner have a current or a restricted lisence, any outstanding warrents, also if the car is stolen..... being a p plate in a skyline (even a non turbo) highway patrol will most probably notice you at some point and give the car a check over.....

Having a full license won't make the risk of being caught too much better, all depends if your in the wrong spot at the wrong time and where you drive the car and how you drive it?

If your going to put performance parts on your car don't drive it to the city on weekends, brighton lesans at ALL!!!!, heopefully don't hang around the sutherland shire during the day or night and steer away from other cop hot spots like paramatta and liverpool.....

basically if you want a car that goes fast but wont grab cop attention, get a daihatsu charade and put swift gti engine and modd the shit out of it...... and keep the outside standard........ unfortunately even in a standard skyline you will get pulled over one day and something as obvious as a pod could cost you fines and waste your time even if its covered and the cop realises its not standard

after saying this my car is defectable but been getting away with it for 9 months now lol but i recon having a defectable car (eg: pod, non plumbed bov, intercooler....) makes you drive slower and more cautious because your always thinking in the back of your mind not to grab the wrong type of attention.... i'd like to see somebody argue that in court one day...

i think what hes getting at is something about p platers not being able to drive 6cyls with engine modifications or similar. i read something along those lines recently. i think what he wants to know is how they determine an "engine modification".

i dare say it would be anything that improves the performance of the engine. pod filter inc.

seb88y, are you allowed to drive turbo or not? i seriously wouldnt waste money on modding a average car, whats the point? if you want a bit of fun get a pulsar sss or something. i think they had sr20s in them.

saw one "streetracing" at about 40 clicks on today tonight a few days ago!

you can't mod, isnt that the law?

Try calling the RTA instead of asking random strangers who the majority of have a full licence.

I'm considering either an R32 or an S13 but with limited exterior modifications.

Yes. That's the one - how they determine engine mods.

I'm not allowed to drive a turbo. I got my Red P's in February of this year.

But I love the shape and look of the R32 and S13. If I still have the car by the time I'm onto my full license I'll hopefully drop a turbo engine in.

So those two are ideal.

EDIT: Haha, streetracing is certaintly not what I'm out to do. Far from it. It's because of these idiot hoons who have forced the Road Authorities to restrict what we can and can't drive. I am no hoon.

imports and hpi's are expensive to run and maintain so unless you don't mind working purely to maintain a car, then get one.

To help you out I bought my r33 gtst in January, before then I had a kia rio. When i had the rio i never worried about money, went out all the time and what have you..... I have traded that all in for a skyline lol. But it is just the most amazing experience of owning something like this, im still at uni and working part time so its hard to restrain myself from destroying the rest of my savings on this car. Once the modding bug bites you there is no cure.....

so unless you find a job that can support both the car and your lifestyle fine (usually happens later in life), you may have to choose one over the other, as for me, im trying to do both lol and its about half successful at the moment...

have a good think before you make your decision because it can make life alittle harder in the short term

I am slowly catching the modding bug but I think that I am disciplined enough with money to manage it effectively. If it takes me another couple of months to do that modification I've been craving for then so be it. It'll be tempting but worth it in the long term.

If you're really itching for it then why not? If you can afford it and you want one bad enough who's to stop you?

My advice: Do your homework, don't rush into anything.

Consider things like how long you will keep the car i.e trade in for a turbo when you have full license, drop a turbo engine in? With the way prices will go by the time you have your full license it very well probably might cost you more to do all the associated mods with turbocharging a n/a engine than if you were to sell it and buy a factory turbo car.

Insurance is the biggest killer for young' uns and one of the reasons why I've held off buying a GTR as much as I've always wanted one

Your life changes and so do priorities, as much as I am kicking myself with how much I've spent on my GT-t knowing full well I'll never get that money back, The fact that it was my choice and the joy it brings everytime I hop behind the wheel... I'd do it all over again

you got the maintaining part right! ive had my car for 18 months now, and am only now in a position to spend a bit on mods! well not really, i still owe 15k on it, but ive been waiting ages to do these mods!

2 blown engines and a turbo didnt help.

oh and wheel bearings, clutch, tyres...

fkn price of petrol! what a joke.

Appreciate the advice. Thanks alot buddy. I won't be purchasing the car until January so I have plenty of time to scout out for parts etc and weigh up options. I got a good quote from Just Cars for full comprehensive so I'm reasonably happy with that.

This is correct.

As far as legislation goes, it is there. But it isn't enforced.

Like it has been said, you will be better off either waiting until you get your full licence and buying a turbo, or buying a naturally aspirated and trading it in for a turbo. Car manufacturers don't just strap a turbo on the side of a car to make it go faster. They put bigger brakes on, revised suspension, different ECU, cooling systems ect. While there is nothing stopping you dropping a turbo into a naturally aspirated car, it will probably be cheaper in the long run just to buy the turbo model as the lovely people at Nissan have already done the R&D for you :(

But then i've seen P platers driving around in GTR's s15's etc on their P's who are hit by the laws.. So meh..
